Person who wrote the Plex permissions blog post here. The reason I went with the ID method is to save the reader the time it takes to create the user manually. In older versions of FreeNAS pre-ACL editor, you did need to create the user manually since it needed to show up in a drop down. It's completely unnecessary here since in essence it's just running setfacl with the ID. Setting an ACL for the group is also completely unnecessary in this case. Something I would in the future like to get all the media plugins running as the same group, which for most of them is just an /etc/rc.conf entry. All that would be required then is an ACL entry for that group and all your plugins would have the proper permissions. You could even fine tune it by adding specific deny permissions for some users since deny takes precedence over allow.

Thank you for the helpful tutorial. I have been using Plex for several years on a PC and it works great. I just did this install on my new TrueNAS box, and it worked fine. I needed to add a custom DLNA profile to get it to talk to my Yamaha receiver, but it was a bit of a nightmare to copy the file into the Profile directory. You will need to go to the jail and from the shell inside the jail, enable write permissions to the Profiles directory, then make an SMB share to the "iocage" folder. From there, you can copy the profile. Now, everything works great!

If you intend to allow Plex to 'optimise' your media then you'll need to allow read/write to the dataset as it creates the Plex Versions folder with the media.

I still haven't upgraded from 11.3 U2 or 3.. Every time I upgrade Freenas something quits working, rather it be Plex or my auto nightly backup from our phones. Freenas works great, but I'm not very good with Linux and I end up spending hours if not days trying to troubleshoot something that might be simple to some, but not for me. I'll probably end up buying a synology nas being more user friendly. Plus I'm using an older Dell T5400, which creates A LOT of heat and is a power hog. My hats off to anyone who truly understands how to use Linux.

@@GeoSnipesW I use an app called syncme for android.. not sure if its on apple. you have to enable smb1 support in freenas in order for it to work. I am also still using freenas11.2-U6, not sure if smb1 is still an option in the newer versions of freenas.

@@chris_schenkel I knew smb1 has security issues, but it was the only way I could get my phone to nightly backups. I ended up replacing myFreeNas and buying a Synology DS920+. Synology also does not recommend using smb1, so I found another app for my phone called FolderSync. There is a little learning curve to the app, but it supports newer versions of smb, I assume FolderSync would work better with FreeNas as well.

So I was having issues being able to install plugins. Had to go into network global configuration and set the ipv4 and name servers to my default gateway from ipconfig. Able to install plugins and jails, no system restart was needed. Time to watch the video for real as this was phenomenal background audio.

I had troubles seeing the folders and files, went down the permissions rabbit hole. Turns out, you must map each dataset into the jail, even if they are under the main dataset. All good now, but posting in case anyone else has Movies/TVShows/Music in datasets under a main dataset.

The much needed changes in the plugin system (to make it easier) have been included. The Official plex plugin doesn't use those het. Don't know if they will, but for jailman we are working on it to integrate it for the next release. github.com/jailmanager When the new setup precedure using the new plugin features are thoroughly research, either me or Thorsteneb are also going to update Kern2011's guide accordingly. github.com/kern2011/Freenas-Quicksync It should be straight forward, but it takes some time for us (the people working on guides and scripts) to include these changes.

I just wish people upstream at FreeBSD and iX Systems would have realized how many users they’ve lost over the years by not supporting this key feature set for most home users. I have run Plex for a long time and was never happy with the permissions... Shares for groups didn't work properly and I found that things only worked if I had the files owned by plex. This inspoired me to investigate further. When the plex plugin was installed, it used plex accounts of 972 and plex groups of 972 as well. When I added my own group and user in the server, I added plex as 972 but the group got 1000. I had not understood at that time that the Plex jail has its own group and user files so it was not paying any attention to my plex group. I now renumbered my plex group in the nas server to be 972 and used Lawrence's ACL video here and... presto!!, sharing works as I expected. All this time I had been messing with grups of wheel or the false plex and wondering why it didn't work right.

Is it possible to have mount points from different sources(two different pools) pointed to the same destination(/mnt/Media/Movies/Movies & /mnt/Media2/Movies/Movies source with destination /mnt/Media2/iocage/jails/PlexServer/root/mnt/Movies)? I add the mount points, but it only sees the last mount point added.

How do you add another mount point from another pool to Plex without deleting the first mount point? I have 3 pools with 3 media folders for different media files. I add a mount point in Plex and everything is fine. Add a library in Plex, it loads, and accessible. When I add a second mount point from another pool, it deletes the first mount point I added and those files are not accessible anymore, nor can I re-add them or are they visible in Plex Edit Library. Only the second mount point pool folders are there. What to do?

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I used it to set up and everything went well until I switched from my old core 2 quad pc to my new r710. I got truenas set up and working again in the new machine except plex wouldn't work. I messed with it for a bit and just decided to remove and reinstall, now when I try to install plex it says its already running even though there is no jail or plugin!? Is there a shell command to stop it and delete it so I can start over? Thanks

I follow this (and other guides) to the letter but I always end up with "Movies" is empty even though I can verify that it isn't. I have made sure I have copied known good media into the folder and verified it is there from the TrueNAS shell by navigate to where the storage pool and data set live. I have my mount point set up correctly becasue Plex can see ther 3 different chidlren data sets I have for movies, tv shows, and music, but no matter what plex doesnt see the actual media in the folders. I've used the jail's shell and navigated to the mount point and can see the 3 ddata sets so I know its mounting properly, but if I list out the contents of those directories, they are empty...

I'm getting a "Converted files cannot be written to the server's disk" error when trying to convert stuff, it seems that plex doesn't have any permissions to write anywhere, but I am so lost as to how to give it the proper permissions. How do I know what user needs to have permissions and then how to I fix it? I'm so lost, I set up this plex install like 8 months ago and have pretty much forgotten everything.

Hi Tom, if you have a dataset media MOVIE1 on DeadPool and another dataset media MOVIE2 on NVME_Pool, can you make both datasets availavable as 2 mountpoints in PLEX? I tried and it doesnt work; ONLY the 2nd/latest mountpoint is available to PLEX. I started PLEX on FREENAS about 5 years ago and today I have 2 separate computer cases holding different genres of movies due to limited capacity of the HDD and chassis. Each case hosting a PLEX server for the media in each case. I just bought a server chassis with 24 hotswap HDD and intended to consolidate everything into the new chassis [as separate pools using import connect] and managed by a single new PLEX server; it just doesnt work =(. Any recommendations? Thank you.

Hello thanks for your videos! Why your truenas its that slow ? Cuz uses single core instead of multicore ? You click on Plugins and take for ever, same with mount points and where ever you click. You have 72 threads and it works slower than my 4 cores machine. I dont mean to be rude, im just sorprise by the time it takes on every click. So, truenas core 12 uses more single core than multicore ?

Mine will not load the web portal no matter what I try. I had to install it as NAT because it repeatedly failed under DHCP, even though all of the other network functionality in FreeNAS works properly with DHCP.

@@jmunoz1996 The docker apps, and VM's work very well also, after watching a few howto videos. Hopefully you like it. I used a bunch of old various-sized drives, in a mix of 8 drives totaling 18TB. Really the only RAID requirement is that your parity drive has to be the largest (or equal to) sized drive in the system. Very happy with it on an old Ryzen 7-1700. Mine is both a media server running plex server, an I.T. Home Lab, and backup server for the household.
