Great video. A small note for other people. I was trying to install ubuntu on true nas scale, and it wasnt working, but I had different/ no errors like what was in this video. However setting the permission as mentioned in the video did let it work for me. No need to change the python file. So for anyone really, I reccomend doing one step at time, and trying the vm inbetween.

Yeah this has been fixed on newer versions now it is just permissions no need for python fix anymore unless you are using 22.12.0

Great info to have. The walktrough is easy to follow. Keep it up. It would be great if you can put together a tutorial for noobs on mounting storage in docker kubernetes (ex jellyfin, qbittorrent) so that SMB (ACL) share would not kill there hostpath access.

Thanks! I was having issues setting up a bridge even with Wendell's great video, but at least it's easier now through the UI. Also great job still not fixing this issue a decade after debian fixed it, iXsystems!

Yeah the UI actually working is nice. IXsystems does a great job but some things just slip though for too long.

Thank you so much! It appears they have fixed the problem you were trying to solve in this video, however this is the third "tutorial" I have tried to follow to create a bridge to allow network access to the host machine. The other two articles/video glossed over the bridge network device creation, or used confusing wording and examples. I was starting to think it wasn't reasonably possible to connect to an NFS share on my TrueNAS host from a VM. Now I just have to sort my NFS permissions and I'll be able to move on with my migration from Unraid.

Yeah they fixed quite a few of the issues, but it is nice that the bridge part was useful to you. Nice to know I wasn't confusing and my examples were good enough to help.

Now, a walkthrough for backups (including the raw VM file(s) vmdk or onvf or whatever, and encrypted data sets), and restores.

The networking issues made me stick with core when I tried scale a while back, good to know that has been fixed. Currently in the process of upgrading my truenas box, maybe I'll give scale another try.

New Sub, Trying to figure this out, Keep it up, let's see what else you got, I prefer TrueNas Scale over Prozmox: I think the interface is much cleaner haven't been able to ever GET A FREAKING VM DISPLAY to work, I couldn't find anything and nobody knew what I was talking about This is awesome!!!

The whole problem starts with creating a blank admin user without permissions instead of just using root. In a business, yes, you should create admin users because there will be multiple types of admins. In a home environment it's pointless. You can see already with the fixes that you need root to be able to do anything significant. If you need to work in the gui, you should be root. No one else should be in there and there shouldn't be a connection possible from outside local to the gui.

Yeah I think quite a few people are going to run into this issue. Since the installer recommends to use admin. I guess an alternative would be showing people how to enable the root account after install or showing what permissions do what, so environments with more than one admin can set the permission as needed. Yes I understand it is pointless other than for learning purposes. I should have explained what caused the issues. Not just announced it as if the problem is a TrueNAS is broken type of issue. Thank you for your feedback.

@@perkelatorZ79 btw I’m having the same issue using root and yes root doesn’t have any other permission other than built in admin in my case, that’s quite strange... I’m still investigating but seem that the localhost solution doesn't work either for me , something in the installation fucked up I think, I have also a lot of problems installing apps (can’t write on shares) no matter the permissions/ user

Truenas scall is linux where core is BSD. The convention with linux has become to not login as root and most distros disable root login by default.

Hi I'm Still getting this error when trying to install ubuntu server VM - [EFAULT] Failed to connect to libvirt I have given permissions to the admin user just as you did, do you have any other idea what might be causing this error. My Current Train: TrueNAS-SCALE-Dragonfish. CPU 14700 and nVidia p4000

This is from the admin account being added as the new default account and it not being given the correct permissions out of the box.

Thank you for the great explanation. I have a question regarding the truenas. Do we have a safe mode in truenas
@perkelatorZ79
@perkelatorZ79 Жыл бұрын
If you mean like a windows style safe mode, no, but you can always boot using a previous kernel if you need to.

One thing I haven't been able to find an answer for is does TrueNAS Scale ONLY support zfs for filesystems? I have a rather low-spec NAS with only 8GB of RAM so I cannot really use ZFS with this low RAM. Does TrueNAS Scale offer btrfs or ext4 - despite the disadvantages - or does it HAVE to be ZFS?
@perkelatorZ79
@perkelatorZ79 Жыл бұрын
ZFS only as far as I am aware. 8GB of RAM is supported, but it on the low end. Depending on the workload and amount of data would determine if Scale would be a good option. I just wouldn't use to many containers or even try virtual Machines. OpenMediaVault is a good alternative to TrueNAS Scale if you really want to use btrfs. I personally do not trust btrfs I have seen to many horror stories from people much smarted than I am, but you do you I have one or 2 people I know that love it.

2 weeks ago, but keep in mind that it's recommended to use ECC Ram when using TrueNAS. Error correcting ram is meant to prevent corruption when handling data in a zPool, and ECC Ram is suppose to help prevent that.
