This song is different than most. This is a rare time where Tilian leads the lyrics and tells a cohessive story. Usually John comes in with his sections and his lyrics tend to be a little more out there and stray from the clean lyrics. This is the closest DGD has come to a traditional singer songwriter type of lyrical storytelling

Austin Stanley True. For their usual poppy formula, that works, but for the dramatic effect they achieved here, they needed to let Tilian take the reins a bit more.

While I definitely agree that this is one of the few storytelling songs that DGD has (and one of their best songs in general), I feel like Jon’s and Tilian’s lyrics worked together very well in Honey Revenge from acceptance speech. I would definitely encourage a listen if you haven’t already heard it 👍

I recommend going through their discography at least once. Then listen to Evaporate. The song is the last on the album and ends with old lyrics from their older songs with the final lyrics saying "don't it feel good/ you got what you paid for." Which I find absolutely fascinating as if they're saying people got what they paid for with the album.

Another song in the dynamic vein of “Man of the Year” is “Death of the Robot with Human Hair.” Not as in-your-face the whole way through, but it’s a progressive sampling of several of Dance Gavin Dance’s sounds. It shares the dramaticism and twisty-turniness with this one.

Glad to see a local band doing these reaction/review videos for one of my favorite bands. I'm going to say the latest DGD album coming out this month is going to chart higher than the previous ones. People who don't enjoy metal, hardcore, and the types of genres they fuse together have been listening to DGD more and more. Each album they find a way to add in some new genres, styles, and catchy pop to grab a new listener who wouldn't think twice about listening to a band like this. They either ease you into what they are all about or Jon Mess and Will Swan just throw it in your face but in a way that anyone can jam to and appreciate. I've been listening since the beginning and not many bands in the hardcore/post-hardcore space in the early 2000's have had this much success or lasted 15 years even with the Jonny Craig (still a shitbag and the music industry still gives him opportunities to work feeding his addiction) issues throughout the years. With the singles they have released so far, there is no way their audience won't grow and this won't be their most successful record yet. Keep up the reactions/reviews guys. You have a new subscriber from Massachusetts and I started listening to you guys on Spotify as well.

Okay so I've watched you guys react to a handful of DGD jams now and I think that after each of these, you should look up the instrumental. Every album has now been released instrumental and rather than get new songs that way without vocals, you could check them after you react so you can appreciate those sick ass guitars more lol. I like Man of the Year because it's the last song on Mothership and kind of just feels like a closer to that album. With that being said, you HAVE to check out Evaporate off of the album Artificial Selection. It is also the last track of this album and the end of the song has different vocal lyrics from several of their previous sounds. Plus it has the singer from Eidola featuring on the song which is another solid band.
