Carol Kay from the Wrecking Crew teaches Jazz the same way. Chordal scale tones. She also started on jazz guitar from the Oahu door to door salesman. She mastered the steel and was playing jazz guitar in South Central L.A.with all the Jazz greats. Thats where she met the great Earl Palmer. It all started with her Oahu salesman.

(First time I heard Paul play Nervous Breakdown I bout had a nervous breakdown!) If Jerry wasn’t hard enough to play already! lol I always love his playing! I played in a band with the great pedal steel guitarist Walter Haynes for 9 years. He taught me so much. What a pleasure it was to stand beside him 5 & 6 nights a week. We played w Johnny Paycheck in spring of 93. What a fabulous experience! One time I was at Walt’s house and he had Buddy on the speaker phone & introduced me to him. It was like a dream come true. Buddy pretty much bragged on Walt’s playing the entire call. He told me that Walt helped him get his start with Little Jimmy. Buddy was so far out there-on a different planet.. I had to tell him that the Red Neck Jazz stuff changed my life. He laughed when I told him that he and Danny sounded like Jimmy & Speedy on crack Cocaine. I still can’t believe I said that. Young & dumb back then lol God rest their souls 🙏🏻

Paul Franklin is great. So modest. The first time I saw Paul play was on a Vince Gill video. He's so in to it with so much passion. I love the steel. I wish I learned it instead of guitar.

Fantastic stuff - esp enjoyed the talk about Buddy Emmons chord/intervals vs scales approach. I'm not a steel player but I've been a fan of Paul's since Lyle Lovett's 2nd record. Currently enjoying the Bakersfield album he did w/ Vince Gill. Delighted to see him on Truetone Lounge.

The chord notes are the only ones that matter to the brain alright. All of the others are just steps in between which lead up or down to the strong harmonies of the chord. It is great to hear it discussed this way.

OMG, we all owe homage to the door to door salesman from Oahu for LLoyd and Buddy?!!! And according to Steve Suveg's comment below, the incredible Carol Kay also, SHE came up with the incredible bass line on Beachboy's " Good Vibrations" and so much more!

Paul. The guitar you have behind you on the wall, I have one very simular and maybe the same. Mine has Silvertone on the head stock but not sure if the neck has been changed, could you say what make it is please. This is the first time I have seen one the same. I bought it sometime in the 1960s. The one I have is a 6 string guitar with a tremolo. The body is thin and solid. Hope to get some more info on it thanks.

That is a Hofner Beatle Bass. Many guitar versions/copies were made in Japan during the 60's. Zac

Thank,s for your quick reply, it looks like it could be Japanese then, mine is not a bass guitar, but I could see yours was a bass guitar. Thanks for your help. Watching your videos is helping.

It will work fine, as long as you are not expecting to get distortion from the speaker. They are stout and true.
