Trum, trum, terum, tum, tum (based on Landsknechtslied, 1919) by Walter Gättke (1896-1967) From: 10 lansquenet tunes; first published in Laudan, Hamburger Jugendlieder (1924) The lifeless body, which was found floating in the Elbe at the end of February 1967, turned out to belong to the better-known storyteller, poet, folk theater play and songwriter, radio play author and journalist Walter Gättke. Born in Hamburg on May 4th, 1896, the date of the missing person's report was set as 10. Jan. 1967, as the date of death. Although the circumstances could not be completely clarified, it was initially noted: Died as a result of an accident. Only later: suicide. From September 1914 he was a volunteer musketeer in the Infantry Regiment. Hamburg (2nd Hanseatic No. 76), the regiment in which he spent the war years on the western front until the end of July 1917. He was slightly wounded in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, but sustained a serious gasseous wound in the Battle of Flanders in July 1917, which led to long hospital stays and rendered him unfit for the front for the remainder of the war. Still under the impression of the victory reports in spring 1918 (breakthrough in the West) but also the less happy news (Black Day of the German Army, hunger riots, sailors' uprising, armistice), the first (soldier) songs to the lute were written, but they were only very cryptic in the violent ruptures of the here and now of the early 1920s, but are transported in a poetically transfigured way into the turmoil of the 30-year war and its escalating lansquenet nature. The present one was created in 1919 and quickly found popularity as a"Wanderlied" by the Bündische-Jugend like the many other youth movements of the 1920s and early 1930s that were wandering the world. In 1922 came his later best-known work. The "Youth Marching Song": And when we march (then a light shines that breaks through darkness and clouds radiantly. And when we find ourselves marching through the country, then a holy fire glows in all of us. And when we reach our goal in a storm approached us, then new territory of action loomed before us all. You people from the night, don't forget your fire, stay on guard). The "Pirate's Song": The Störtebecker is our Lord, advised by Godeke Michel is a creation from the years 1924/25 and found its way into the Marine-HJ and Marine-SA before 1933. In addition, also in the song books of BDM or more generally HJ. And in the spirit of the Nazis, there were passages of text sung by 12-year-old Pimpfen, such as: And when our boat makes its last journey, laughingly let it sink as a coffin. We die the old pirate way. Fighting today and drowning tomorrow... although parallels to his own death in 1967 are of course purely coincidental. Although some songs (too many!?) of the youth migration movements of the first quarter of the 20th century were included as marching songs in the first song book of the newly formed Bundeswehr (from 1956), Gättke's work found no further approval here. When he lost his job in 1931 during the global economic crisis, he increasingly turned to writing, which had previously only been done on the side. This was followed by comedies for the stage and radio plays and audio episodes for radio broadcasts. From 1932 he was a permanent employee of the Hamburger Tageblatt for the feuilleton and for the cultural section. He became a party member on April 1, 1932. From April 1934 he was appointed editor at the Reichssender in Hamburg. However, in the post-war period and in the maturing but still young Federal Republic of Germany, Gättke did more harm than good with his written confession (original text): "... I was in the ranks of those who fought for the liberation of German art from Judaism. " Because he was already well over 40 when he wrote it, soon no one would have believed him to be merely a follower, obeying orders or just youthful, immature, self-important "talking about it".
