Xi but not Pres. Marcos, the Philippines should understand the priorities of the U.S. in terms of economy and international politics. The Philippines already have the mutual defense treaty, EDCA bases, and iron clad commitment of the U.S., but the realization is nowhere. The Philippines is weak in that it depends too much in the U.S. - unlike its neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. There is no problem whether it is a Duterte or someone else, to asset our rights will always be true. The question is how you settle that rights with diplomacy. If the assertion is by show of force then build up the military, purchase more bigger and powerful marine assets. If PH remains weak military and the US cannot become a reliable US ally, other than the US waiting for the war to break out to help, then an independent foreign policy will remain the best option. That is what our SEA neighbors are doing, they remain economic friendly with China with SCS issue to the side, and look they are economically benefitting from China. Then why can we play wisely with that diplomacy. Otherwise, compel the US to put all their military might in the South China Sea, giyera na kung giyera, kung iyon naman pala gusto ng mga pilipino. We'll see who will win, atapang mga pinoy, may ibubuga kasi!

The unity of ASEAN was shaken after the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) delivered its judgement on South China Sea maritime claims in July 2016. When the Philippines took China to ITLOS for compulsory arbitration in January 2013, it never consulted ASEAN beforehand. It knew ASEAN would not have supported the action. When the award was made, ASEAN countries had no common stance and were badly split. All came under pressure from the US and China to take opposite sides.
