For a company that does not generate a profit (simply stated, that brings in more money than it spends), dies. So, the insurance companies realized that due to mismanaged California-based policies (which have been noted for months if not years(, would cost the insurance company more money in claims payouts than in policy income-generation. Simple. I do not now nor ever have worked for insurance; I just like Truth and Reality, no matter what. As a bumper sticker reads, "Reality does not care about your feelings."

My husband, brother in laws, our 3 sons, 4 nephews and 1 sister in law gathered our tools, food, money, trailers and drove to North Carolina 1 week after the hurricane to help 3 family members whose homes were completely demolished. To be able to proceed in recovering you need permits and those apparently are 18 months from now. @ef418 Every company is excited to insure expensive properties. The higher the property price, the higher the insurance price. Insurance companies ran away because the government did not provide reasonable safety measures, such as water resources or shrub and forest clearings. The disaster proves that those companies were right to refuse to insure, refusing to commit to a mismanaged environment which caused the disaster. You wouldn't guarantee safety if the government refused to ensure the conditions for safety. Google Santa Ynez Reservoir and you will see a bone-dried reservoir in the picture in Google Maps.
