What happened to him is most likely dementia. His father, Fred Trump, had dementia as well. Trump, as seen in this interview, seems like an entirely different person than he does today. Trump has always had narcissistic tendencies, even back then, but he used to be a more balanced and nuanced person. As he became older and started to have cognitive issues, it seems like all of his worst character traits became magnified and he became not necessarily a completely different person, but more like the worst version of himself.
