The one thing that stands out to this day about Donald Trump calling for the execution of the Central Park Five (CPF) is that the jogger was not killed at all after the brutal attack. Though she was brutally beaten and raped, she survived. Trump, right out of the gate, took out a full page ad in four New York City newspapers calling for bringing back the death penalty in New York. In the ad, Trump stated that, "I want to hate these muggers and murderers. They should be forced to suffer and, when they kill, they should be executed for their crimes. They must serve as examples so that others will think long and hard before committing a crime or an act of violence." The thing that bothered me the most is the call for capital punishment when there was no murder. Trump did this because the CPF were comprised of black and latino teenagers and I firmly believe he would not have taken out the ad otherwise. After the teenagers were exonerated due to a confession and a DNA match from the real rapist, Matias Reyes, Trump never apologized for taking out the ad after it was known the CPF were innocent.

I was an RFB customer (free room, food, and beverage) at all 3 Trump casinos in AC. As such, I was assigned a personal host. One day while speaking to her in the lobby of The Taj Mahal, she said she had to cut our conversation short because she had a cleanup to do. This confused me because I knew cleaning was not part of her duties. When I inquired what she meant, she said she was just informed that the boss (Trump) was on his way, and she had to get all the black employees off the floor and shuffle them into the kitchen because Trump did not want to see them when he walked through.

A thing that Cenk did not mention is that until Trump if was hard to get Republican candidates to put more than token efforts into talking to minorities, because there was so little return on investment. Most candidates had to spend a lot and give a lot of extra time to make a 1% difference in the black vote, which is 13% of the total, whereas if they spent that much money and that much time chasing the white vote they can get maybe 10% if nearly 50% of the total. That is not a racist difference. That is economics. Where there is racism, which is shared by Democrats, is that Republican politicians believe that all black people open their ears for is some sort of gimme programs, like black people who are interested in the function of government are so rare that it would make sense to say there's my African-American, because such people are one out of a thousand. There may not be a majority of any group with an altruistic view of what government should be and do, but a good candidate will make their case. There are thoughtful people who love their country and if you can make the case that you will run the country in a better way, and not for short-sighted goals, then people will vote for you.

That is not a fair description of the Southern Strategy. The Southern Strategy was to SUPPORT CIVIL RIGHTS QUIETLY, voting in favor of things like the Civil Rights Act in significantly higher numbers than the Democrats did but not campaigning on it or talking about it to the media so that Democrats could take the credit and the blame. This is missing fuller context of the story trump was trying to tell. If you watch the rest of the clip (search “trump look at my African American over here”), his point about him behaving is that some protesters dressed in KKK started disrupting the rally. They got booed and removed, took their costumes off and as they were leaving, the “African American” punched one of them. But it got misconstrued as a black guy punching a trump supporter. (And believe me, I despise trump, but you gotta have full context. The “behaving” part isn’t what’s weird)
