It was an SKS with an aftermarket stock which accepted detachable AK magazines. Also, I have yet to see an SKS that can consistently hit better than 3 MOA at 300 - 400 yards. Not exactly the ideal "sniper rifle". Regardless, you are correct and it was not an AK. A stock SKS is loaded from the top like the M1 Garand. Furthermore, a common and unmodified SKS doesn't have a detachable magazine, or a pistol grip, or even a black stock. The uninformed would think it's a deer rifle. and is loaded from the top like the M1 Garand.

How is it that a guy living in Hawaii made his way to Florida and within a short amount of time acquired a rifle & ammunition without being able to legally do so? Also, how was he able to get accurate details of Trumps movement giving him enough time to setup a hide site in anticipation of Trump being at a certain hole on the course within 300m from said hide site??? The fact that the rifle he acquired was a SKS implies, to me, that either he had 1. very little knowledge of how firearms actually work and their relative suitability to particular tasks, OR 2. he didn't have a lot of time to prepare and had to work with what was available on very short notice. Since he had such a woody for going and fighting in the Ukraine (it's unclear to me if he actually did go over there, but he definitely seemed like he WANTED to) one would think that he would have had at least a passing knowledge of firearms and their various roles, so #1 doesn't seem likely that he would pick one of the worst firearms for what he intended to do. #2 seems far more logical and likely especially if he got a mysterious phone call saying 'Be at the 6th hole of Trump International on Sunday September 15th, and bring a gun and be prepared to wait awhile'. That is what would have happened if there was a low to mid level mole in the Trump organization. If it was a high level mole, he would have had better access. If there was no mole then he wouldn't have had any idea Trump would be there that day and time and thus could have picked ANY day and time, so therefore he wouldn't have picked the worst gun choice.

The Assault Weapons Ban DID NOT REDUCE MASS SHOOTINGS! The number of alleged reduction is way below the standard deviation, nor was the AWB even a factor! Two reasons! The ban was on new ones, and two, "post ban firearms"! Under the federal definition, the number of "Assault Weapons" remained the same. Surplus military AK magazines, millions of them, were exempt and imported. Later in the AWB, millions of post ban rifles were made here or imported.
