The thing that struck me wrong ab the dress and having ANYONE else wear it, is that it was literally designed and made for Marilyn only, they dyed the dress that color to try and match Marilyn’s skin tone the best they could. It’s a historic piece that is usually stored in a special chamber to regulate the oxygen so it doesn’t get damaged. Mackie, part of the design team for the original dress wasn’t happy that someone besides Marilyn wore it. I mean, if there was one of Washington’s wigs in a museum, it would be unthinkable for someone to wear it. So my issue isn’t with Kim, it’s with Ripley’s for taking that chance.

I study fashion and textile, so I can say that the Monroe dress is fragile due to it's age. Most likely it is made of natural fiber such as silk with crystal applique. It's why antiques are always handled with special gloves, temperature control show cases. The company obviously don't have such knowledge of natural fabric, silk for example deteriorate over time because it's protein. The crystals weight the dress down. For a person to wear an antique dress almost 8 hours or more, the body temperature, movements etc for sure will damage the dress. They'll need antique textile experts to restore the dress. The ripped is permanent, just like trying to patch a torn paper,it's irreversible.

@@satorarepo744 Ripley's is technically a museum, which is why people expect them to abide by standard codes of conduct/handling/storage for pieces like these - particularly those which many would consider national treasures or ones of historical significance (fyi: I don't revere the dress in that way, but I know there are people who do, from fashion/garment enthusiasts to historians and so on). In terms of business then, it is actually inherent in Ripley's business model to do their utmost to uphold those standards, first and foremost for the items in their collection, but also for the industry, as I understand it. I suspect that's why a lot of people are putting their two cents in on how this bit of "business" has been conducted.

Unfortunately, the dress was sold at auction out of private collection and Ripley's was the company with the money to buy it. A few thoughts on the Rwanda piece, First, this a violation of the spirit of asylum, including the Dublin Conventions (EU agreement to require those seeking asylum to apply in the first country they arrive) as it off-shores migration to a "third safe country." Rwanda is specifically under scrutiny from various human rights defenders for the imprisonment of Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of the famed Hotel Rwanda. For asylum seekers, choosing the UK is a decision composed of a plethora of reasons, and it is inhumane to continue a cross-continental version of Australia's off-shoring practices. Anti-human trafficking/people smuggling efforts are often used to cover-up ulterior motives from authorities. These activities do occur and migrants are in danger, but for the most part agencies like the Home Office use this as a guise to cover up an insane practice. In other words, if your concern is human traffickers, you protect the victims by sending them to a country they have no connections to and declare them safe ? Is this punishing the victims to send a message to the perpetrators ? The EU's anti-traffikcing rhetoric is fraught with problematic arguments and motives, and studies show that practices like off-shore detention do not deter migration. Also, the mental abuse on migrants is often worse and makes them eventually eligible for asylum by virtue of their torturous conditions. Finally, no study has conclusively demonstrated that such efforts has stopped human trafficking/people smuggling. In the case taking place in Africa, it is often the criminalisation of transporting people who consented and asked for assistance in using safe routes. The criminalisation drove them underground and leads them to take more dangerous routes and studies have shown that this increases the death rate and makes migration more dangerous than it was before securitisation. Lastly, as for the "legality" and "legitimacy" of these flights, court challenges reduced it to one person, so that flight was for one person. How is this considered to be protective if UK courts found legal challenges in the idea of the practice? In summary, the UK is openly violating the spirit of its international commitments to provide asylum to those seeking protection from persecution, the tone-deaf choice of Rwanda ignores current controversies through the imprisonment of Paul Rusesabagina, the anti-trafficking argument is superficial at best and hypocritical at worst, and legality of this practice is being challenged domestically in UK courts even before the European Convention of Human Rights (from which the UK is a party and original writer) - Fan of Trevor Noah and French/Pacific Islander student of Human Rights in Paris

The issue I mostly have with the Rwanda situation is that it isn't likely to change anything for the refugee crisis. Aside from the fact it's blatantly the UK trying to avoid its responsibilities as a nation when it comes to refugees and asylum seekers and taking care of them themselves (which they're already doing an abysmal job of anyway), the plan is for people who arrive in the UK illegally to then get deported to Rwanda for processing, so what? It still means you need to get to the UK first to get deported from there in the first place, the smugglers and traffickers don't care where those who pay them end up, they'll have the money, and as far as they're concerned they did their job of getting them to the UK illegally, if they're subsequently deported to Rwanda that isn't their problem. And from the reports I've seen where journalists asked refugees themselves if the plan would make them think twice about trying to get to the UK, it doesn't look like it will deter them from attempting to cross over either, given the idea is being deported to Rwanda so they can have their application processed to then go to the UK legally once their migration status is sorted (or come up with a plan B for if the home office says no), which means the smugglers and traffickers are still going to get their money and keep doing it. I can understand why people might take it as Europeans being racist and assuming Rwanda isn't going to have basic amenities, but it's also far more than that, it is another showy plan from the UK government with no real substance that isn't going to work just to try and desperately cling onto power. It's also fairly racist from the UK government, because we all know it's predominantly aimed at refugees from the Middle East, I doubt it's going to be an option for refugees from Ukraine.

The UK has no responsibilities to accept refugees. And even if you disagree, just compare the number of refugees the UK has already taken in compared to the likes of China, Japan, Korea, or, literally the entire African continent. Also, Middle Easterners aren't a race.
@mortyjansen399
@mortyjansen399 2 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right. …. I doubt it would apply to the refugees from Ukraine. (Honestly i am just happy they beat us to it, because this has been the plan from Denmark for a few years, but they are still working out the legal angle, on how to not only deport to there but also make it into a processing center. So people do not cross over and enter the continent to get to the country they plan. ….. but we have distinguished between the migrants and the refugees, and both should be treated equally, it should not be so in a perfect world, but the number of poor migrants absolutely outnumber the refugees) but now England came first so i would think we are leaning back and taking a look at what is the problem according to the court. And then adding that to the complete law that will be passed at some point with refugees/migrants from outside Europe)
@hannahsmart4494
@hannahsmart4494 2 жыл бұрын
@@MayTheSchwartzBeWithYou 1) nations do have some responsibility to at least keep them alive long enough to process the application, they don't have to accept the application, I never said that they did, but they do have to process it and the refugees need to be somewhere while they wait, it's why there are detention centres in the first place. Deporting them to Rwanda for processing isn't going to help the human trafficking problem, it isn't going to deter refugees, it is however going to be a great way for the UK to put the refugees out of sight and out of mind, thus shirking responsibilities, or at least being able to blame Rwanda for any further scandal on the conditions refugees are kept in. 2) I never said Middle Easterners were a race, just that before Russia invaded Ukraine, the refugee crisis was coming from that geographical area, and people from the Middle East, strangely enough, don't tend to be white. The majority of Ukrainians on the other hand are white. Yes racism plays into it. 3) The UK has already taken far less refugees than they SAID they would take. Don't say you're going to take X many people and then not take X many people. And if you're going down that road, look at how many the UK has taken compared to France or Germany, every country takes in different amounts depending on their policies, the people in charge, and the mood of the population, I'm not angry about that. I'm angry about the broken promises and the empty solutions

@@mortyjansen399 That is true, it is important to distinguish between refugees and migrants, but tbh, the media has been using the two terms so interchangeably it can be hard to discern the truth sometimes. Like people fleeing Syria during the war there were called both refugees and migrants, when most people fleeing that area just wanted to escape a warzone, same happened with other countries. I guess I just don't really understand how people would risk their lives and come to Europe illegally just to come work in Europe. Just because I don't understand why though doesn't mean they shouldn't be treated with basic human dignity. Something that's been a bit lacking lately in many places.

@@hannahsmart4494 1) Nobody is dying because they're being sent to Rwanda. That was literally Trevor's point. It's not like the UK was shipping them off to North Korea or Yemen. 2) So? Culture is a thing, and Brits clearly share more culturally in common with Ukrainians than Iranians, Pakistanis, Iraqis, Afghans, or Bangladeshis (who were the top five nationalities for UK asylum applications in 2016). More similar cultures means easier assimilation and less cultural friction. Countries have a right to be selective with their immigration. 3) Politicians make empty promises all the time. Regardless of what some politician said in the past, the nation's best interests should always be prioritized when possible. The UK isn't obligated to do anything just because France or Germany did it. The UK is an independent nation.

Trevor doesn't understand the UK Government deportation situation. The big thing is that government can't be trusted. They tried to deport elderly people who were living there for 40 plus years because their country of origin was not UK, even though they were asked to come from common wealth countries to help with rebuilding after WW2. They are called the Windrush people. It is hypocritical because Priti Patels parents are also migrants so for her to come up with this outsourcing idea is kind of disturbing. People are not really saying that Rwanda is a terrible place, the main issue is the UK government not helping these people but trying to off load the problem somewhere else, far away where these people won't probably be checked on. Out of sight out of mind, we've seen how things like this are done badly like in Australia and Christmas island and even Calais. Rwandans aren't doing it to be nice either but because they are getting paid. Now the UK government is suggesting to electronically tag these human beings. This was always about getting POC out of UK. It's all kinds of messed up and not a solution.

Sharon … FYI… There are a lot of fashion archivists who don’t wear gloves when handling historic textiles because (1) they block your sense of touch enough that it’s much harder to tell when you are putting too much strain on the fragile fabric and (2) gloves create more friction than clean hands and are less likely to snag the fabric. To be fair the same thing could be said about almost all the royal families 💔 They are truly American royalty.

Actually real royal families have a symbolic role for the country where they reign. The queen of England represents tradition and history of the country. Very strange to compare her with a family that became famous following a sextape leak . .

@@FuzzyKittenBoots .. no. Nooooo. Noooo. No. Just no. 1) UK’s royalty in comparison are at least incredibly educated, well-mannered and bring hope & healing awareness to many humanitarian causes… not just which Kardashin’s a** is biggest. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 2) again.. just NO.

Trevor, you really missed the mark on the Rwanda deportation issue. Deporting asylum seekers to a different country is an abdication of responsibility and almost always leads to worse outcomes for the asylum seekers (see Australia's awful Nauru detention camps). In addition, it's illegal for the UK to do so under the Refugee treaty --it violates the non refoulement clause. And finally, Rwanda specifically is currently headed by a dictator, and the regime has convicted a number of asylum seekers for "offences" like speaking to human rights agencies. Human Rights Watch has more info. Even setting that massive issue aside, Rwanda currently has very few application processing officers, which means that the asylum seekers could be stuck in limbo for years, unable to get jobs or move on with their lives. That said, I do think moving the asylum seekers from Libya to Rwanda might be measurably better for them -- Libyan detention camps are operated like prisons with a number of people already murdered. But again, it's a bandaid on a gaping wound that's been allowed to fester due to the world's richest countries choosing to look away.

Rwanda cannot be compared to the Nauru and Manus Islands. That was literally putting asylum seekers in prison. Rwanda isn't an unpopulated island in the middle of nowhere, it's a large country.

Would like to know where you are from and Have you ever been to Rwanda???? Some of you people ramble on about dictators but ignore the fact that these countries are better than most countries across the world. Majority of their people are thriving compared to other places. Libya was also under a ‘dictator’ yet it was one of the most economically developed countries in Africa. Now it’s filled with detention camps due to NATO and organization which GB is a part of!!! What Trevor missed was that the UK should keep those refugees cause they kept quiet and let their Allies destroy Libya and several other Arab Nations. Heck they even participated. We ALL know the immigration problem in Europe got worse after the death of Gadaffi and the Arab Spring. Even terrorism across the world got worse after US invasion in the Middle East. They made the problem they should keep it!!!

Trevor is the best, in just the first 2 minutes of this video he has nailed everything and his delivery and vocalizations are the best in the business. I love Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel, but I think Trevor Noah has just turned out to be the best, kudos to Jon Stewart for making that call! Now I will continue to listen to the remaining 14 minutes 🤣 Trevor is just so freaking smart and funny! 😂

I blame Ripley's for it. They should not have the responsibility of an iconic piece of US history because they obviously didn't take that responsibility seriously. An historical artifact should be celebrity proof. Ripley's should not sell the dress, they should donate it to an actual museum. I'm sure they made plenty of money from letting Kim Kardashian use it, they should cut their loses and do the right thing.
