You omitted 2 important aspects: Trump bragged about lowering the cost by getting Boeing to use two 747s that were already built and ready to be delivered to Russian airline who had cancelled order. This required Boeing Commercial to first unbuild those aircraft down to bare skin before their could be passed to Boeing Military who install all the fancy military gadgets and refueling systems along with installing normal systems. Secondly, Trump moved the finishing contract from Boeing to some friends of his. Problem is that they had no experience and couldn't advance project, got sued, went bankrupt and project was returned to Boeing. Since Boeing has had to issue bonds/shares to raise cash to operate on a day to day basis, it has no money to fund the finishing of this boondogle.
@FreeDemocracy-20252 күн бұрын

747-200, especially with all the added weight of the military modifications had very lmited range. It couldn't do Los-Angeles Sydney non-stop for instance. This is why there was the 747-100SP. The 747-400 brought range and 2 person cockpit and 747-8 extended the range and fuel efficiency. What I had read was that with the range of the 747-8, there was little need for refueling capability. Not sure if the feature was cut in the initial order or when Trump cancelled initial order and renegotiated new one when he took office.

The other reason Airbus didn't bid was because the USAF required the aircraft to have 4 engines. The A340 was already out of production at the time and the A380 has too many airport restrictions the 747 doesn't. So AB didn't have a plane to even bid with.
