Calling someone Sir or Ma'am is a sign of respect for Asia especially in southeast Asian countries like Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand etc. We use that word all the time to give respect to people. If anything, the president of Indonesia showed he was very respectful.

Indonesians place great emphasis on respecting another person especially when they are older. Between Asians, to address your equal as “sir” is standard. But I think that in some parts of the US, it is seen as only between a lower-ranked person and a higher-ranked person. If Trump addressed President Prabowo as “sir”, some Americans might be offended. I think this might be a factor. However, I don’t think Trump personally cares if he is addressed as ‘sir”. I believe many Americans just call him “President Trump” or “Mr Trump”.
