When Trump says something serious, everyone takes it as a joke. When he jokes, everyone thinks he is serious.

I've seen enough about this topic for one week. In almost every video I've seen covering this subject has had a retarded amount of people complaining and crying about how "Trump is threatening another country with invasion." I can guarantee none of them saw the video in full nor bothered to watch the original source material. Trudeau met with him over concerns about the 25% tariffs Trump was planning to place on Canada and as a joke he stated "If you're so worried about it, maybe you should become our 51st state." It was a joke. Never had to look too deep into it. He never threatened Trudeau and doubt he intends to. If Trudeau takes it seriously, then it's their problem.

That's outdated. Back in the Mulroney era, the old PC party had become barely different from the liberals(much like the UK tories and labour currently), likely brought on by the 63 years between 1921 and 1984 that only saw 12 years of conservative government. At that time, the democrats were arguably right of the PC party, hence the "America has no left wing parties and Canada has no right wing parties" saying. But things have changed. In 1993 the PC party collapsed to 2 seats with the rise of Reform. The split in the right wing vote let the liberals win 3 straight majorities, until the PC and Reform/Alliance parties merged, which was more the dominant right wing Alliance absorbing the dying centrist PCs. The modern CPC is actually right wing. Not as much as the republicans, but it would be absurd to look at Poilievre and Harris' respective platforms and argue the democrats are right of the CPC on either social or fiscal issues. They may be right of our liberals, but they're well to the left of the CPC. In short, our conservatives have gone through a metamorphosis since the 90s and emerged much more conservative, while the US democrats(and our Liberals) have moved much further left.

Not a new idea, it's been a thing really since 1800. The war of 1812 was partially fought as an attempt by the US to annex Canada (though it was still a British colony at this point). This remained in the American political consciousness for some time, though by World War I, Brute style colonialism was going out of style, and fighting the war together helped strengthen the bonds, really leading to modern US-Canada relations today.

The trade balance between Canada and the U.S is normal, the U.S is a consumer country that generates value from transforming Canada's ressources, while Canada is an exporter country that generates its wealth through ressources. This would basically mean that Canada would be forced to sell ressources for free and generate no wealth. Trying to ''balance'' that would in fact debalance everything and greatly impoverish Canada and northen states, which would give Canada a good reason to ally with Europe, Russia and China against the U.S and stop giving ressources to the U.S.

At risk of entertaining a very stupid and terrible idea, Canada would probably be 10 states and 3 territories. I doubt anyone would want to merge to because it would cut their representation in the electoral college. If forced, you might see 5 at bare minimum: BC, The prairies, Ontario (i.e. Manitoba split up to their neighbours), Quebec (they would fight tooth and nail for sovereignty), and the maritimes.
@avroarchitect179319 күн бұрын
The Canadian economy crashes without Quebec, its one of the 2 banking powers in the country and the home of all the high tech sector, but all the trade from the rest of the provinces passes through the Saint Laurence river and if that gets cut, you don't get healthy economies joining the US but a series of failed economies or ones in crisis. It would have to stay as is and then you would have to use force to put down the french sovereignty movements. Canada being annexed is a net negative for the US and far more trouble than its worth. Not to mention the social and welfare programs you would have to integrate to keep the populace happy, or the MASSIVE political swing that would happen as we demand better Federal level workers protections, single payer healthcare, and more. In every joke, there's always a bit of unfortunate truth. Control of the Northwest Passage and access to the natural resources in the north are becoming an economic and strategic imperative. Canada has the world's largest shoreline and only 8,000 sailors and a few old boats to patrol it. Canada has the 2nd largest land mass on the planet and only about 70,000 soldiers to defend it. A nation that cannot defend itself isn't truly sovereign. I think it's pretty obvious Canadian provinces will inevitably become States. It's the best for everyone. The only reason Canada exists is because of the United States being their overseeing protectorate for the last 70 years. The free ride is over. It makes sense, even though Canadians sigh about the reality of it.

We will need high speed underground so we can travel around the continent quicker. Robots will build us some big structures we farm the cintinent so bread dumb cheap steak still cheap we will have so much land still have more chickens than people and a lot of cows and everything good it can work out we are set up africa is high population of poverty and sickness but if north america had 1.5 billion it could really be vaste and there would still be big empty areas. Esspecially north most will always live in lower 48 itll all workout in the house representation so if we make edmonton and calgary into a state called south alberta they gain 2 senators amd house seats so they will be more apart of the bigger picture they will have a say in the business that is happening from alaska to florida and from greenland to hawaii. One big unit. It already is canada has to fall in line with usa usa is too powerful bit right now we have a situation where canada is really few people locking away a lot of lands and we have to back alaska who borders russia a country canada alone wouldnt be doomed if they came back to alaska so we need to be able to go through. Canada also need to be able to go to alaska and california. I christ man most camadians live next to new york city and its not easy to judt walk right in because its a foreign country border issue. If canada folds and admits the 3 branched consitutional republic is best a d that their democracy is a lie they become the area that sill become the upper 48 united states or something incredible perhaps historical like never before and regions get representation in the senate and house amd can have an effent even on the president who will preside ovee the entire continent. We could set it up 200 senators and 2 from soith alberta 2 from toronto 2 from vanvouver we make 3 new states out of those areas. We make saskatchewan into 2 states and plant a new capitol city in each and make 4 senators. We will have a 100 star spangled banner. As a Canadian, I would be surprised to see how many people would vote to become American citizens, in a referendum... Because opinions here are divided on this subject, here in the country of the Great North. But, according to one of my university professors, in the late 90s (Clinton era), the United States did a secret study (Rand Corp.?) on Canada/US integration. This study was based on the more or less similar results of the reunification of the two Germanys and other former Soviet/Communist/Socialist states of Eastern Europe.

That’s really interesting, I’m American and it always felt like something that was obviously not going to happen. So it’s strange to see it was actually considered!

Also, if a political party was responsible for annexing another country, don't count on their vote for the following elections. I Alberta and Saskatchewan are very conservative, but I can't see them voting for someone who is trying to take "being Canadian" from them.
@c.s.oneill207912 күн бұрын
Did the Texans stop "being Texan?" Nope. So why would you stop "being Canadian?" If the UK were to somehow join an expand Federal Union (wouldn't be the USA any longer), we would precisely want them to keep being Brits. For the same reason, we would want you to keep "being Canadians." Because ... it's cool.

Canada after dissolving and being absorbed would become more mixed. Areas would still be very liberal as well as areas would be very conservative. Esspecially because we will be able to retrofit curremt areas of provinces into states and make areas of a privince a new state so people will want to go settle it like the old days again and those areas will have more pioneer types like we see with alaska it would indeed be very mixed

Despite what all the doomsadayers over here ,that are high on MAGA, might say. Canada is definitely on the up as long as we can diversify our economy, invest in housing and infrastructure and diversify where immigrants settle. We have a lot of room to grow.

One thing to consider here that you didn’t mention is that the tariffs were leveraged to convince Trudeau to strengthen their southern border and pay more mind to drug smuggling and trafficking into the US from there.

Oh, sure, why buy our oil when you can just take it for free, with our water, gas, and minerals? By the way, for the ones who like to join, US health Insurance, anyone? It's just $1000 a month and when you claim you get a lovely stamp that says: DENIAL It's red, in capital letters and very pretty.

In case of annexing adding all the 10 states would be great for conservatives, because states with small population will get actually more electoral votes combined

@@purpleelemental3955 Uh, as a Canadian, I do, considering our country as a whole is far more liberal on average than the US. You'd basically be getting a nation of Californias. Now, of course, you could suspend democracy and force 40 million of your new 'citizens' to not be able to vote, but then... well, remember the last time Americans were taxed but could not represent themselves?

@@purpleelemental3955 As a Canadian, it would be 'that bad'. Canada, on average and like much of Europe, leans far more liberal than conservative when compared to the US.

Trade doesn't need to be balanced. A trade deficit lowers inflation by pushing extra cash overseas, lowering inflation but keeping the economy growing with more goods and services. Especially if it's a large deficit. If you impose tariffs, it raises the price of goods inside your own country that are imported from other countries.

It occurs to me that the automatic assumption is that Canada would mainly vote Democrat. Who's to say they don't become the nucleus for an even more insane third party, but which actually has the voting base to be relevant? They'd likely siphon votes from the Democrats by pulling in the DSA democrats and other extremists. The Democrats were supposedly too conservative for them before, and as of 2024 the Democrats are openly the party of Neocons, so they might not be able to convince the average Canadian to vote for them.

They are closer to our conservatives in policy, in the west the Liberal party hardly gets any action and thats because of its connotations with the East in which the NDP was created which is a social democrat party not really in line with the states. The Liberals in the east are a brokerage party between Quebec and the Anglophone portion and place themselves in compromise however their historical roots are similar to a center-left democratic christian party. Canadians would most likely represent an entirely more liberalizing effect on American politics in which they will hate. It would just be unrest our conservatives would vote republican as there are already those who see themsleves as American in the prairies however it would also bring in the western NDP scene which is the formal leftist opposition in the west. Adding Canadians would be a tinder box to Bernie-esque politics and reform parties, the American conservatives in favour of annexation would hate it.
