The wage in America is dubble than that of Taiwan. The production cost is too high and the workers are too lazy. It's not beneficial to build fabs in the US. If Trump raised tariff to Taiwan, TSMC might raise price for American customers. No one can compete with TSMC in advanced chips, what suffers are still the American customers and companies.

100% tariffs on TSMC is a logical extension of the Chip Bill. It is to hollow out Taiwan. No US government will be derelict enough to continue to rely on Taiwan, to plan to wage war against Russia/China for US industries after c. 2040. Taiwan has to be removed from the global supply chain, unless a formal agreement is reached with the Chinese mainland. Taiwan will face very severe energy insecurity that will seriously impair its ability to deliver any product expeditiously. It depends on fossil fuel carrying sitting ducks that will be targeted with very little force, far from starting a war, causing extremely low level of casualties. Under such circumstance, the US will be militarily paralyzed. The US may have non-military responses in weaponizing the USD and trade sanction, but in another 15-20 years they will be rendered useless with the rapid growth of the Global South and BRICS +.

Trump could ban all American companies' AI chip designs being made outside of the US territory. With that, whoever wants to use them have to buy from the US 😄

No they wont. Apparently these tech companies outsource their manufacturing to Taiwan. Without that Taiwanese chip production, chips will be in low supply.

Americans do not have the dedication to do chip product. Outside Taiwan is a must, but in JP, SK, SG or other Asean country.

I live in Taiwan, and as far as my understanding goes, it will be hard for the USA to become as competitive as Taiwan. Once you see how hard workers are here, and how lower their salaries are (compared to specialized wages in the USA), you would notice that even if it’s 100% implemented in the USA the price will be a lot higher than the ones of Taiwan.

When we analyze a policy, we should take export and import of the same importance. We have cheap computers because they are made in Taiwan. We have cheap shoes because they are made in Vietnam. A US worker's wage can hire two Taiwan workers, 4 vietnam workers. That's why we need to have worldwide supply chains. If everything is made in the US, the cost of the products will be very high. There are other countries except the US. The products are not only used by the US but also export to other countries. If Trump imposes high tariffs, other countries will impose high tariffs too. Most of the countries in the world are trying to have an agreement to lower the tariff and reduce the cost while Trump tries to increase the cost of the US companies. Wrong policies will make the US a country with high inflation, high price products can only been sold in the US but hardly export which destroy the US economics finally.

Taiwan needs to sell TSMC to an American company or make 2nm chips in the US at the very least.
@watasiloo

wrong, TSMC can raise price. It's the easy solution. No one can compete with TSMC in advanced chips. Running new fabs in the US will cause big loss to TSMC and there is always high risk of buiseness security.

They'll just up the price. It's a far better business move than selling the entire company to the US.

@@BaconMaster-y7i Though the US market is important, Taiwan can create its own market. Taiwan has a strong semi chain, Mediatek can crush Qualcomm, it's possible to produce AI chips and sell to European and arabic countries if Trump keep pushing Taiwan.

Who pays the tariff? TSMC or the US Importer? The US can pay more for TSMC chips or do without.

@@user-ggyy34wsk575 A quick google search seems to show that TSMC, the taiwanese chip manufacturer, makes most advanced chips, including the ones used in AI processing centers. Unless you can prove otherwise that is.

@@user-ggyy34wsk575 we do actually, just not as good as the US. However, this could change if US wants to abandon Taiwanese Manufacturer. Because no matter how good the design is, you need to product made.
