The treaty governing the transfer of the Panama Canal from the United States to Panama is the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, signed on September 7, 1977. The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal: Guaranteed that the canal would remain neutral and open to vessels of all nations in times of peace and war. The U.S. and Panama agreed that the canal must remain neutral, meaning it would be open to ships from all nations, regardless of peace or war, without discrimination. The treaty granted the United States the right to take military action if necessary to defend the canal and ensure its uninterrupted operation and neutrality. After December 31, 1999, all U.S. military bases in the zone were dismantled, and Panama assumed full control over the operation, maintenance, and sovereignty of the canal and its surrounding area. While the U.S. no longer maintains a presence in the canal zone, the right to act in defense of the canal’s neutrality remains a formal, treaty-based commitment. This arrangement reflects a compromise: Panama achieved full sovereignty over the canal and surrounding territory, while the U.S. retained a safeguard for protecting global commerce and strategic interests. China has significantly increased its presence around the Panama Canal through various infrastructure investments and construction projects. Notable developments include: Port Facilities: Chinese companies control two of Panama's five principal ports. Hong Kong-based Hutchison Ports operates the ports of Balboa on the Pacific side and Cristobal on the Atlantic side, both strategically located at the canal's entrances. Margarita Island Port: In 2016, China-based Landbridge Group acquired Panama's largest port on the Atlantic side, Margarita Island, for $900 million. This port serves as a critical hub for maritime traffic through the canal. As of December 2024, China does not maintain a formal military presence around the Panama Canal. However, Chinese investments in critical infrastructure near the canal have raised concerns about potential strategic implications. China's growing economic footprint in Latin America, including Panama, is viewed by some U.S. officials as a strategic maneuver to expand its influence in the Western Hemisphere. This expansion has led to heightened vigilance regarding China's long-term intentions in the region.

Seems we reap what we sow. Panama was established in 1903 when due to US pressure the area ceded from Columbia so the US could cut through the middle and build the canal. The new country benefited little and suffered while the US controlled "Canal Zone" prospered, we supported and brought Manuel Noriega to power allowing him to export cocaine and other drugs to keep control of the area, until he stopped cooperating with the US and became a bad man. Since Panama took possession of the canal, it has been widened to twice it's original width, and is making money for the people and government of Panama so they can get the services and care they need. Now DJ wants that money funneled back to himself. Of course history means nothing to DJ if it's not the fictional history of his own invention.

The Torrijos-Carter Treaties of 1977 do not contain provisions allowing the US to reclaim control of the Panama Canal based on toll prices. By December 31, 1999, the treaties transferred complete control of the Canal to Panama, with Panama maintaining responsibility for setting toll rates. The only military intervention rights granted to the US were to defend the Canal's neutrality from foreign threats, not to address economic disputes. Thus, when Trump sends his army to reclaim the Panama Canal, the Torrijos-Carter requires Trump to also send in another Army to defend it. INTERESTING.

Ha Ha Ha Ha REALLY Donny! Panama would probably let you fix it. I'm not sure if most of you know. But the Panama Canal needs an overhaul desperately. It needs to be widened by at least 40ft for the newer ships. as it was made to 1900's standards and ships are much larger now. Picture super cruise ship's or supertankers that are one kilometer long! The canal needs to be able to handle these too! Its a well known and lamented issue in global shipping for decades now.

The US created Panama to build the Canal. Back then, Trump Sr. (Teddy Roosevelt), sent the US Navy to forcibly give independence to northern Colombia (later paying Columbia $35 million for it). And then the US rescued Panama from its dictator, Noriega, in 1990. Yet you won't find any sign of appreciation from the Panamanians. That said, the Canal represents a major source of income and funding source for the new adjacent canal built for the larger cargo ships that transit the locks. The US had nothing to do with which is now the most important part of the canal. Trump is picking fights with everyone. C'mon Denmark, give us Greenland or we'll boycott your Danishishes!

I understand why we would want to take it back, BUT! there are big problems with the canal. I saw a documentary not too long ago that they are having a damn hard time with the water that feeds the canal. This is likely why they are raising its costs due to the water issue. Someone probably needs to study this before making hasty political decisions that will affect the American economy and by extension the American people. (in my humble opinion)
