I was a flight engineer for 23 years with over 7,300 hours on these planes. I've been retired for 18 years now and I still miss it everyday. I thank the person who filmed this operation and put it out here so old guys like me can relive our past.

Little or no load for any aircraft equals a much shorter takeoff. There are C-5 videos on YT that show the other extreme - heavy load, engine runup while standing on the brakes, straining engines, slow acceleration, and a lonnnng takeoff roll, like this one - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4HWpaxurqiYrcU&ab_channel=dasspr

Looked like they rotated in about 4 plane lengths! Great job! They were nearly back up in the clouds before they crossed the boundary fence. I'll take that performance boost of the M over the trademark whine of the As and Bs. They used to upgrade these at the plant near my house so I got to see C5s flying fairly regularly. Same plant that built the F22 so I got to see them all fly before getting painted as well.

I was the only squid on board one crossing the pond to go to Somalia in 93, That was an awesome flight I won't ever forget. Had to land though half way across the pond to repair a cracked windshield. Other than that it was a flawless experience. I'm proud to have served. God Bless America!!!

Of course. Think about it like this, you're somewhat of a representative of your nation when visiting foreign nations, and it behooves you to act with utmost professionalism. Not to mention they'd get hemmed up by superiors if they didn't, and that's always a good motivator by itself lol

I think the ATC talked too much, but that is me. I was in the Air Force and was at Norton AFB, then onto March AFB and worked on C-141's and an occasional C-5. ATC doesn't talk that much from ATC US AFB's.

To say it was challenging is an understatement, but it was a hell of a lot of fun. (Thanks to my CFI, Bob for the MUCH needed encouragement and assistance. He is a Gentlemen among Gentlemen!) I flew twice in a C5 back in 1985 when I was in the Marines. We flew to Egypt in a military operation named Bright Star. We spent 21 days in Alexandria, out in the desert. We basically did nothing but clean weapons on a daily basis because so much dust. On the day b4 leaving we visited the pyramids. That made the trip worth it.

I worked on C-5s from 1999 to 2001 for Lockheed doing floor beam and floor panel replacements at Westover ARS in Massachusetts. All upper galley section. When we pulled up the floors, sand from the first gulf war was crusted all in between the metal. Awesome fun job. From there I hooked up with Raytheon Aerospace and went to Stewart AFB in NY and did window post modifications on the C-5s there.

Just a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes when America's Commander in Chief visits anywhere in the world. Awesome, absolutely awesome - AND - EXPENSIVE! Need to mention these are only a part of the logistical aircraft and equipment required. What we're not seeing is the coordination required between the US and UK to provide the pre arrival, on the ground and departures security and logistical efforts for these visits. Awesome work from every person involved.
