“He’ll be pretty angry that we’re not spending on defence what he thinks, and indeed what the Nato secretary general and many observers say we ought to be spending.”
Trump will be furious when he realises Europe can’t maintain peace in Ukraine due to a lack of troops, says William Hague.

We are already being spied on from multiple angles whether it be social media platforms, malware, the government through ISPS etc, the only way you can avoid being spied on is not to use the internet and that is less and less feasible in this age.
@CandiceGoddard

No, it isn't. People only think so because not using the internet is slower but actually you can still shop and bank in person. You can be entertained by reading books, doing a craft, taking up art, visiting cultural venues etc. You can correspond by phone or in writing and there are still analogue mobile phones. You can even use a computer without being connected to the internet because you don't have to use subscription software like Microsoft Office when Libreoffice is available. You can even still buy electronic typewriters. People chose to use the services for convenience (or laziness) which is why they continue to exist and become more insidious and invasive. .

Traditional values? Like censorship? Like intolerance? Like absolute abject ignorance of what the other side is saying? I don't recall these being Britain's traditional values. The guy says he only reads The Times. Well, in that case he probably had no idea of the depth of the grooming gangs scandal (or even the details of what was going on and by whom), he never watched demonstrators being filmed standing on the sidelines being attacked by police dogs. I'm American and I've never in my 62 years seen police in the US swinging batons on groups of people let alone groups who were doing absolutely nothing but attending a demonstration as I did in the protests against two-tier policing. And I saw this as it happened, in real time by an independent journalist who I followed in right from the beginning of the demonstration. It happened. You can't fake that and yet these people have no idea or choose not to investigate the inconvenient truths. Why are people upset? It is ignorance by the left (willful or not) due to silencing of anything that goes against their narrative. Censorship, intolerance, absolute abject ignorance. Can I be any clearer? Today's right in the US is being led almost exclusively by former liberals who suddenly realized they were being lied to by our mainstream media. Everyone tells the same story that they fought it, made excuses for it, but time after time seeing the biases and misuse of the power trusted in them, they all at once saw the truth. All the lies-of-omission, the bad statistics, the misleading use of definitional nomenclatures, the hypocrisy, the double standards, the lies presented as common knowledge, and on and on. And once you lose your ideological capture-by-masthead, they say it truly is like suddenly seeing the world as it is, commonly using The Matrix as their analogue. Many say it hits like a hammer. But if you don't allow yourself to look, you'll never see.

The difference between electricity and AI, is that unless the power cables get taken out, electricity is reliable and behaves in predictable ways. AI on the other hand is almost unusable for most use cases studies due to how unreliable it is. The stock market shock in the US tech sector is a great example of how brittle this AI boom is. It’s based off of speculation rather than tangible value being generated. I’ve been researching and using AI for a couple of years now, and it’s almost never useful, and when it is useful you still have to check everything it does for accuracy. The potential is there, but it’s currently massively overhyped.

The AI race will undoubtedly reshape many aspects of society, particularly in the field of paid employment. It concerns me that the educated haves will capitalise by making the best use of technology to save costs in industrial processes, which inevitably means increasing job losses for the have-nots. I would feel more comfortable if that situation was more high-profile with those who shape the governance of our country.

Mechanization and later automated mechanization always have cost jobs and artificial intelligence is another milestone that makes automation even more effective. The only thing that has never adapted to automation is the working people who still have to work 5 to 6 days a week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. like in the pre-industrial era, and if the bosses had their way, even longer. It's no wonder that more and more people are no longer needed, at least in industrial manufacturing.

The point about deepseek being a more cost effective approach simply because the west can afford to pour all this resource in, so doesn't need to think economically, reminds me of something I heard in the 70s about the space race. A pen was needed thst would work in zero gravity, in all orientations in other words. The US did a lot of research and development and at great expense came up with something that worked well. The Soviets took a different approach, they just used a pencil.

Who determines what is extreme ideas and what are not extreme ideas? Far left communists may think middle of the road people have extreme ideas in the same way left wing people may think right wing people have extreme ideas, or right wing people may think left wing people have extreme views. The only arbiter of truth will wind up being the global elites, and they are not friends of the working man, so do you really want these global elites determining what is "truth" and "good ideas" and what is "not truth" and "bad ideas"?
