Hey everyone! You might remember a video I made a few years ago covering this topic. So many of you have reached out to me saying that it helped you out in some way and I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all of you.
The last edition of this video was created under kind of rushed circumstances so I wasn't in the proper state/space to make it the best video it could be, so this is me taking another stab at it a few years later with some updated ideas as well as more specific examples of myself and my experience. Let me know what you guys think!
This video took a lot of time and care to make, if it moved you in some way please consider supporting me by checking out my music via the links below❤️

Thank you for this video, I'm doing some changes on my embouchure too... Did you include on your routines, lip buzzing or mouthpiece buzzing?

Good discussion Kyle. But can you show us what your old embouchure looked like, & what your new one looks like? For example, was your old one strictly doing an "M"; & is your new one unfurled? Show us what it looks like. Thanks.

Having gone through a similar process years ago I think you describe it very well. For me the change went pretty quickly and proved to be well worth the struggle. The investment really paid off. Best wishes to anyone considering such an overhaul. You can do it!

thank you! it’s the hardest thing a trumpet player can do, but it’s well worth the effort. glad you’ve had success with it!

How did you start with new embouchue? 5 min a day? Long tones? How did yo know that your apperture is god ... because feeling on the lips is strange ...

yes! I started with very short sessions, 5-10mins just doing long tones and breath attacking/tonguing the same note. the feeling on the lips may feel a bit weird but it shouldn’t be uncomfortable or be feeling like you have to add extra tension to get the sound out. in the new position it should still feel relatively easy to blow freely.

Do you have any experience with Claude Gordon’s Systematic approach to daily practice for dialing in your mechanics? Thanks,

@@kylepogline1790 I was recommended to try it out because I have issues with range also.. like you, I played on the bottom lip and could play double C once or twice in a day, but after that was done. I changed my embouchure and can’t squeak out anything above double G barely.

@@AnthonyHigham ah interesting. my embouchure used to be a crutch, like i would hardly be using my body or diaphragm at all to compress the air. so when i switched i had to learn how to create range from scratch. i spent an entire summer solely working on it & not practicing anything else really. moving to smaller equipment also really helped, not shallow cups but just a slimmer rim diameter.

@@kylepogline1790 yeah I’m at the point where I want to try new equipment also. I am used to playing random mouthpieces for the most part. I have a 1 1/2 C, 7C and 7E mouthpiece. I noticed that when I play on the 7E and then go to the 1 1/2 C, I feel like I play more focused, and have a better technique.. Any thoughts on that?

lots of very good players have blown their lips out. i am not going there. totally unschooled so the peer pressure is non-existent. i like my playing, but i know no standards. but in a way, if you want to be cutting edge, standards are dead. even they were formulaic. bitches brew was fine with me. not too much else. i can admire the ability, but the music can be boring. i am thinking of busking. all i need is a beat behind me. thanks.
