Hi Eric...steve here.. Im 54 yrs old.. no musical background .. been playing trumpet for 636 days and simply loving it!! Not yet had a lesson but hundreds of lessons on you tube from well meaning guys like yourself.. I'm really not into the traditional Arden type school of learning though so your video is superb at giving me some insight on how to practise..what I've realized is how amazing the brain in at working out on its own how to do stuff and your method I can see really taps into that potential. .. the g now above the staff is in my "comfort zone" (has been for 40 odd days!!) but if i see an A or B I'm not sure if I can get it "nicely / purely" or not!! I was listening to one of the Monster Oil Trumpet Talks (these guys..like you very laid back and want to give somehting back as well.. so worth a listen ) and one of the experts ( they have interviews with about 40 of the top trumpet guys...) said if you can make your a above the staff as easy as your g then you are on your way.. so any tips to make the a and the b (below the top c) float out real easy much appreciated .. but I appreciate that s a bit child's play to you!! Thanks for reading this far.. now I'm off for some Target Practise!!!!

I like this idea of target practice although in a way I've practiced and taught the idea of thinking of notes as targets but not quite the way you demonstrated here. I'm gonna start incorporating your method in myself first and a few of my students and see what happens. I bet it'll make a positive difference! Thank you sincerely!!!

I met Mac at Arturos @ Thompson and Hudson around '92 at about 630. The bartender said this guy can really play trumpet. Most people that walk in are hacks, but he blew the walls out and we became friends. One night he invited me to go out to the Clubs and I took a date. Walked into about six clubs he sit in and play a tune or two and then the next one. He keep saying Oh what a night! With-out a doubt the best night in manhattan ever. I was studying with Allen Collin and he handed me one of mac's practice books, he had over one thousand albums he had played on. That was twenty+ years ago. If you see him give him a big Holler!

The whole concept of "Target Practice" is pretty darned awesome. Thank you for a great video. I also struggle with a metronome while I'm playing. My sight reading ability is bad and I can't wait to try these techniques myself to improve not only my playing ability but also my counting and sense of rhythm.
@gotthesesongs9 жыл бұрын
+TheGholiday I'm conceptualizing a video about sight reading right now. There's really two parts to sight reading...rhythm and notes. They really should be practiced each by themselves to get the best result. Plus, rhythm can be (and should be) practiced without the horn.
@TheGholiday9 жыл бұрын
+gotthesesongs Looking forward to seeing those vids. When it comes to practicing or learning rhythms or patterns, I either clap them or sound them out vocally, usually with a "te te" kind of sound. After that it's just a matter of seeing which notes have a dot or a dash or no articulation (is that the right term?). I find this method helps me identify patterns quickly and I can play them with relative (very relative...lol) ease.

@fullautocare44035 жыл бұрын
I always discourage playing with a tuner. It's possibly the worst thing you can do on a brass instrument. Being in tune all of the time takes practice, and I think that playing with a tuner keeps you from learning what it feels like to be in tune.

Any specific advise to a new trumpet player of 8 months who is struggling to consistently hit E and F during actual song play ? During practice if I get a running start say from low C to E I can hit it but during real song playing going from a D upper register I struggle hitting E &F ....is it my chops just aren’t develop enough yet? It’s frustrating because I can hit those notes but struggle to “softly” hit them in real play.

Torbjørn Jacobsen It's almost like singing in vibrato ;) change the air pressure from your lungs fast, but constant in speed
@gotthesesongs9 жыл бұрын
+Torbjørn Jacobsen I generally perform vibrato with my throat and tongue. Some people use their lips, some use air pressure. All of the techniques sound a little different, so it depends (for me) what type of music I'm playing.

I haven’t tried this yet, it seems doable but aren’t small pinched notes easier to hit than longer 1.5 beats ? And your sample has you relaxing after each note. But while we’re playing a song we cannot always get then horn off our face. I’ll subscribe and watch more videos....thx much tho.i seems to build tension in my lips causing me to start screwing up notes.

doing it without the horn (like while walking down the street) is how i learned to tongue fast and consistently. Hi. I'm a very beginning player, and I have a problem that begins before the problem you're addressing, but which I thought you'd address here. When your intention is to play a G within the staff (just as an example), how can you be sure that you will hit that note? So, in your examples, you said you were going to play three notes, say, C, A, and D (I can't remember which ones you used). Then you played them. But how did you know you were going to sound those notes before they came out? So... ...to use the target practice metaphor, when you're trying to hit a target with a dart or baseball, you can see the target and focus on it and get your muscles to do it. But how do you "see" the target when you have to hear a target that doesn't exist and you're starting without a reference note before it? What happens to me is that I'll try to hear the note, get myself sorted, and then blow. Mostly, I'll be off the note, say flat, and then have to adjust up to it. But if the first note in a piece is a G, you want to be able to hit the G without it being flat or sharp or somewhere between G and F or G and A. Any thoughts?
@gotthesesongs8 жыл бұрын
you have to do it over, and over again...then do it more. the only way that I am able to hear a note, then play it today is because I've done it wrong more than a 1,000 times. practice makes perfect, I get the impression that you are thinking more than you are practicing...it should be the other way around. thank you for watching my video, and good luck with the trumpet.

I agree with gotthesesongs. You need to do it until it becomes muscle memory. Then build the muscles in your chops to get your range.

If you have a note you can't nail target practicing; Do a long tone or two or more. Then tounge largo tones on it for a breath or two, then tounge it staccato for a breath. Put the horn down , bring it up hit the note and hold it for a full count of four, take the horn off for a count of three, back up for full 4 count ,off 3, 0n 4 , off 3 , on off till you get it ironed out. Go to a different note you have trouble with and do the same. Then take a stab at hitting the first note staccato on the first try After taking that tact for about a week on notes I was having trouble with I found I could better do Eric's exercise because by playing longer tones initially I developed a feel for the note I was targeting and then I could better nail it down staccato.

I'm not a beginner, more like the sunny-side of intermediate. What I mean is, after five years I believe I should be able to hit G, A, B, C (above the staff) but after about 15 minutes, I can no longer hit high G. I know that developing a good embouchure is important. Am I to assume that you play until you can't then try to do a tiny bit more, each day? I'm really clueless. Just bought a used Yamaha Allegro, had it refurbished, and it has helped some. I'm not trying to be a lazy player. Just that after twenty minutes or so my face is shot. Some have suggested taking a few minutes break between lesson assignments, which I've been doing and that helps. When I've completed my assignments, I just start playing scales, but after a half-hour, I sound horrible even above high C (above middle C). Love to get some ideas how I can practice longer.
@egwilson37177 жыл бұрын
David D'Arcy there must be something wrong with the way you purse your lips as you go up. This happenes a lot when players practice until they're "shot". I did this as a student, and I didn't know that I was doing something wrong until my mid 20's. This problem of yours can only be fixed by having a coach watch you as you play. There are so many things that could be going wrong, it's impossible to say how to fix it without seeing what's happening. If you'd like a lesson on skype, let me know. I never charge for the first lesson, and I'll be available to give lessons again in about two weeks. Thanks

I've changed mouthpieces so much over the years. I think almost everyone has. I seriously believe that there's no one, i mean nobody on earth that can tell you what is the right size for you. I've always played a lot of mouthpieces at stores, bought the ones I liked, gave them away as I found people who could use them, and repeated the process. I can play very well on a lot of different sizes, and I would like to see more players doing the same.
