Most of the smaller, cheaper and lighter models just don't look all that impressive and substantial when they're getting tossed about in a swimming pool, but this one here with its sheer size looks more like a real ship and can clearly handle waves. The more natural backdrop only adds to the vibe. I wouldn't mind having something like this.

Some tips for the RC action on this vessel.. I recommend more ballast in the bottom.. Also, since the water is substantially thicker for the scale of this model, I would look into changing up the props to push a bit less. Give it a great scale speed. But the ballast will dramatically change the handling characteristics and stop the listing to the outside when turning. It's EXTREMELY realistic and beautiful. Except for the listing and the speed. WONDERFUL work!!!

This model was VERY well done. The lighting is beautiful, you got the ballast just right so she sits perfectly at her waterline. Love the propeller and rider shots as well. While underway her cutters should be swung out, but other than that she’s superb. I’m curious have you tried different propeller configurations? Wondering if you’ve tried both a 3 and 4 bladed center propeller and if you noticed any difference in her handling or performance? Inquiring minds would like to know. ❤

The unfortunate reality of operating ocean liners at this scale. One, you're usually not out at sea, so will sit a little lower in fresh water. Two, instead of sheet metal and wood, you get the equivalent of 30cm solid steel window frames😜 That's a lot of weight up top that needs to be balanced down below. Which was already a challenge at full scale at the time.

1st: it sits a little too low in the water.. 2: the horn heard is an air horn, while Titanic era ships had triple steam whistles... totally different sound..

Not wishing to be picky, but the 4th funnel wasn’t a funnel, and I’m not certain that it carried exhausts from any safety valves. Naturally, when I sailed in her, I was relatively young, and the excitement with the iceberg, unexpected bathe, and so forth may have distorted my memory… The last, older, sister, Olympic, was broken up in the 30’s having earned the soubriquet “Old Reliable”. Modern passenger ships are utterly hideous and vulgar, in comparison with the appearance of all the prewar steamships.

It carried exhausts from any safety valves and cooking exhaust from the kitchens.

@@scottw550Thanks for that. But I’d have to check.. but I’m not sure that she carried donkey boilers. This would imply separate access from the main stokeholds. Certainly the galley(s?) would have separate vents. British ships, even some warships, that I (really!) sailed in or saw, had their own stove pipe whose top end resembled the letter ‘H’. Somewhere I have seen a beautiful colour plate of one of the sisters, sliced open. They were propelled by two 4-cylinder, triple-expansion engines, whose LP cylinders were either end; from which the exhaust steam was led to a single, separate Turbine, driving the middle of the 3 screws. (Propellers). Now this may have led to her disaster. Turbines don’t reverse. If the turbine was stopped, the rudder would have had FAR less authority, to make a quick, hard turn (to port). The ships were known to be sluggish in response to helm orders, too. It was a terrible tragedy. Incidentally, exhaust turbines were popular, frequently driving dynamos or generators, sometimes supplying electricity to auxiliary motors on the shafts. Personally, I like the Gotaverken turbine, where the exhaust turbine drove an impeller in the HP exhaust and compressed and heated the steam entering the IP cylinder. Like a modern ICE turbocharger. (Turbo-super-charger)

@@robinfryer479 As you probably know already, they spotted the iceberg at the worst possible time. If they saw it a few minutes earlier, they would have been able to avoid it altogether, and if they saw it a few minutes later, it would have done more damage, but the ship would have stayed afloat.

@@scottw550Yep! This is also quite true. And the only binoculars were in the Captain’s cabin. It was a ghastly cluster …. But it wasn’t in vain, as far as British ships were concerned. It became law that NON passenger ships were obliged to carry all the life boats for the entire crew+pax, on EACH side. Couldn’t be done with liners, because there wasn’t room for twice as many boats as required. Not a contributory matter, but helm-orders were back to front in those days. E.G. Hard-a-Port meant turn RIGHT, and vice-versa. It assumed pushing a tiller in the opposite direction. I’m not even certain that the wheel worked opposite from a car steering wheel, or an aircraft control antlers. After Titanic, Olympic and Britannic had their WT bulkheads raised to the main deck. However, Britannic, serving as a hospital ship, sank, torpedoed or mined, because the ARMY, knowing nothing about ships, insisted that ALL the WT doors, scuttles, portholes should be wide open at all times…. Similarly the SS Birkenhead, a troop ship, which even had bulkheads taken out. She also sank like a stone.
