if you look closely you can see for a SPLIT SECOND that the artificer flashes white RIGHT before the enemy minion does. for some reason the minion highlighted itself as part of initializing on the gameboard, probably just a rarely encountered bug

This is good advice. In a similar vein I once played my Argent Braggart while all of my 4 or so buffs were still playing animations and he only had the stats of the minion I was buffing half way through rather than the end result.

Hmm. I'm actually on board with changing out Explorer and Defender for Soul Fragment stuff, plainly because soul fragments fit both of those roles. Extra draws and heals. Maybe they're an extra step, but soul frag stuff seems quite defensive, meaning you'll slow the game down and be more consistent.
