Fanatastic, huge part of my own young punk rock life when I sang for Substance, Louisville, KY. We all had to self-start our own scenes. And the media thought the 80’s was all Michael J. and Hair bands. We were entirely overlooked by the industry because we ran our own sh- and I guess, weren’t proper consumers. 😄 Exchanged letters occasionally with Ian Minor Threat. But I also moved on and “grew up”- have 2 beautiful kids. 21 years old. I still play guitar. I still rock to 7 Seconds. Always will. Thanks for this phenomenal interview!

This might sound weird, but Trust makes the hairs on my arms stand up. Just real, true music from the heart. Some may relate it to a significant other, but for me it was about being there for your friends. I love the whoa's during the chorus, as well as the whoa's throughout the whole album.

I was 14 in '87 when my friend gave me a copy of Walk Together Rock Together, it was my first punk cassette and forever changed my life. Got to see them play in '88 at a tiny club in Columbia, SC, still to this day probably my favorite punk show ever. Now I get to see them tomorrow night opening up for The Circle Jerks, looking forward to it. Lots of nostalgia.

7 Seconds were and still my favorite band since the mid 80s. So grateful to have seen them at the Palladium recently! I loved them so much I bought just about every piece of merch and vinyl (a couple copies for the next generation) on the Trust record website, so much so someone named Joe Nelson & Lucas said they were going to send me a special limited 7 Seconds repressing from the "Trust Records Gold Club" but never got it. Is that even a thing? No resentments for not getting it, 7 Seconds saved my life so many times! They were a light at the end of the tunnel since the 80s, molded my +++ attitude to pass on!

I have been a fan of 7 Seconds since the early 80's (Not so quiet on the Western Front was my intro to 7 seconds) . I doubt you will see this Kevin but I wanted to say that you were super huge in shaping a young mans thinking to think outside the box. I felt like I was on the outside looking in when it came to just about everything.Thank you Kevin,Steve,Troy and Dan for helping a dumb kid think a little bit better about himself . Also, thank you Kevin for ALL the positive vibes that you gave through your music. BTW- this 57 year old man STILL stands by the BYO and PMA ideologies. I have a facebook video thingy I call "Upstate Noize Pollution's Front to Back". and a couple of years ago, 7 Seconds was one of the first bands I talked about. I am SO THANKFUL for you guys, The Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Black Flag, Husker Du, DK's, Crucifix, MDC etc - and as always " I'm gonna stay young UNTIL I DIE!"

In early 85, I somehow found their phone or mailing address, and got them to stop in Bakersfield for a show with my band Peace Or Death on June 7 I think. And they brought The Yobs. We got the mix off the board of us and part of The Yobs, so if you know how to get ahold of them I’ve been trying to track them for years and years. 7 Second got lost and didn’t make it unit the next day so the played a solo show. I have a lot of pix of that as well, if some knows Kevin I would like to get a hold of him to give them, and the Yobs 4 songs is so killer. And the shows were killer. All the punks in town showed up

Right at the beginning Kevin describes the feeling of the time about being in a band "unobtainable". You would most likely gloss over this as a throwaway statement if you are, say under the age of 30-35. If you were to underline any part of this with a pen and ruler in a book titled 'The origins of punk' it would be under these words. From my own perspective in the mid 80's you'd have a lot of muso's keen to give you an elitist flipping off 'you can't be a guitarist, its far too technical' or maybe you'd write a single riff and somebody would be quick to snap you back 'you don't even know what key that is in' - which actually means nothing at all (riffs belong within a key, on its own it could be in ANY key) but this was indeed the case, maybe others might agree here with a thumbs up or a comment. You'd flip on the tv and there would be metal bands, thrash metal bands, even back to The Shadows and such in the 70's (etc) and the level of musicianship or proficiency would indeed seem WAY too technical and yeah, it left you with that very feeling... 'maybe it is beyond my skill?'. No - fuck that. Pick up an instrument, keep playing, practice, meet likewise people. Your song is not so great? Who says? Jealous dickheads. Go for it - keep fuckin going.

Kev’s a down to Earth, cool dude. A sweetheart really. His left-leaning lyrics with 7Seconds were an antidote to the Reagan 80s and I appreciated the pro-women, anti-racist, anti-drug tunes on The Crew, Walk Together Rock Together, and New Wind.

It’s hard to hear him talk about growing up in a culture that endorsed cruelty, selfishness and abusing women. Hardcore gave me a morality and a guide for how to live. I needed that. The reason I lacked a moral framework was of course the secular, consumerist, and anti-Christian culture I was born into. I know many people believe ours was a “toxic fundamentalist Christian” society at the time. There’s to much to go into here but suffice to say the 80’s were the death throes of the Christian world. (Look around today, did Christendom fall in 30 years?) Our culture was/is indeed toxic but Christianity guided our society to stomp out racism and to empower woman. I know this idea will fall upon deaf ears . I come from punk and hardcore and I’m aware of popular opinion. There’s to much to say on this topic in this format but I’ll add this: Punk and hardcore became a community. (A fellowship if you will) This community built things. In order to create societies and institutions people use religion. Men and women need a moral framework to build on if they are going to work together without it degenerating into chaos and corruption. Many in our community (either instinctively or through knowledge) knew we lacked a cohesive morality in both the mainstream culture and the underground. Thus hardcore as a “saving” force and a soured of morality. It’s no coincidence that it is basically a Christian morality. Hardcore reproduced much of the good that was lost during the Christian decline. That this happened is not surprising. All of this says nothing about Christian metaphysical claims empirical reality. That’s another topic. Ok…way to deep for this format. I know the claims I’m making will be rejected. I’m aware of the counter arguments. I gotta get to work. Enjoy :) Great interview.

"Old School" is still THE best 7 Seconds album. Remaster The Crew all you want, but it will NEVER have the energy of that classic. The Crew is basically a cleaned up clone that was released after the fact when that album got shelved. The Crew is still good, but if that initial effort had come out back in the day like it was supposed to, I think the band would have gotten MUCH more accolades much earlier than they did.

Though today I'm a 50 yr old, right wing Trump loving conservative who despises left wing scum from places like LA and my hometown of NYC, you can say Kevin will always sort of be part of my liberal inner younger soul, making music for me as a punk rock loving teen in the 1980s. Def a highlight to have bet him before a show they did at CBGB's in the summer of 1990 on the Soulforce tour. Great guy.
