Spot on. A lot of the most effective practices and methods are, in fact, not intuitive. If the best methods were so obvious, you wouldn't need training or coaches and everyone would be an expert within 15 minutes. Without guidance and knowledge of what you are doing, you really have no clue what _is_ right, so going by what _feels_ right can be misleading and dangerous. What's more dangerous is that once we build an assumption based on feeling, it's very hard to let go of it.

Thanks @NUSensei I wanted to make this video for a long time because a lot of people have the wrong approach to skill acquisition and end up falling into the same traps over and over again!

when i started, i worked with how i felt, and people used the visual things like squeeze a tennisball between the scapula's etc. never worked for me till i saw a video or 2 about correct movements, did both and achieved proper backtension. That said, feelings do matter because if my head isnt at archery, my arrows go near the target instead of on. when i feel hasty due to incoming deadlines at work, my shots are hasty too.

Yes, what you're describing is emotional regulation, which is very important! Ofcourse, "I don't care about your feelings" is a play on words, because feelings can refer to physical sensations as well as emotions.

Good Info. And what are the workouts that help to reach the correct back tension technique?
@RogueArcheryTV
@RogueArcheryTV Жыл бұрын
Well, there's a whole system of positions, drills and exercises that we use for back tension. We put a very large emphasis on scapular control drills and technique structure early in the archers development as this is foundational to correct back tension. I have a whole course that outlines the process and goes through the drills here: archerymasterclass.com/p/technique-fundamentals-for-recurve-archery

I also have another video on my channel demonstrating a drill in CCS#3. Note the importance of technique structure and scapular control first though as these are prerequisites. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKWxlGWaqctqmsk

Excellent content! I wish I would have known this earlier, but I had to learn it the hard way. Yet still nobody ever confined my hypothesis - until today. 😄

Yep, back in "the day" I used to get super stressed that I couldn't feel back tension, when every coach and resource talked about how important it was.

100%. So many archers are the same. Back-tension IS super important, and it's not even that complicated, but damn it's got to be one of the most mistaught archery techniques!

Once I had composed myself, stopped crying and cuddling my emotional support wallaby I managed to get through your video about 'my' feelings. 😉 Most people have problems with drawing a bow with back tension because they have no back muscles to speak of. How can a coach get a beginner to feel their back muscles that they have never used and are underdeveloped, especially in kids? People generally rarely use or develop a connection to these specific muscles in day to day life. People who are in offices on computers, truck drivers, dentists, doctors, retail workers, salesmen etc etc unless they are specifically training the muscles surrounding the scapula in the gym then there isn't much of a connection to those back muscles so even if they are shown a movement that will still not hold a bowstring above a low poundage. I guess thats why you use the polypipe 'bow' in some of your videos for beginners. Those muscles without training or use regularly are atrophied and extrememly weak, such as once a week coaching. How can you use back muscles when you don't have any? Coaching error 101 that seems to be a feature of most national coaching programs. Just my 2c worth. I really liked the expert fallacy. Very true, I struggle to decipher what some top level archers are saying since they may not remember what it was like to be a beginner/intermediate. I find there are a lot of assumptions/missing pieces on a few of the coaching courses I've paid for in the past from Pro/World level archers. Some stuff just skipped over which later hurts development. Books seem to be worse as there is no one to ask questions of. Some online courses I paid for in the past for you basically had 1 shot at asking a question and you were done or just pointed back to the course that was never updated. Right now I'm using my shot trainer with a heavy stretchband and make all the movements/positions infront of the mirror to visually check that I hit the position not just a vague feeling of being in and around the right place. Still early days, the form of Olympic Recurve seems more critical than for barebow where I was shooting at a reasonably decent level. So I want to get the movements and positions correct. Great video! More amazing content and a bit more out of the box than most archery content. Thanks Jarryd!

I love your detailed response and mostly agree. People have very weak scapular retractors and very poor control of the shoulder girdle. The only thing is that it's not necessarily atrophy that's the problem, even 'jacked dudes' can have this issue. It's more that the correct motor units are disengaged. Often, with a little bit of motor control training, they can 'wake up' the correct muscle recruitment and have good success. I designed a scapular control circuit with 3 basic drills that is done in 100% of my coaching sessions, and students are getting great results. We invest in this early, from day 1 of training, but after 3, 6, 12 weeks of training, we're seeing an order of magnitude improvement! 💪🏹🎯🔥 archerymasterclass.com/courses/technique-fundamentals-for-recurve-archery/lectures/34294936

It's very true ..i had gotten into some bad habits with english longbow..i tried to translate those same 'feelings' into recurve. Very hard to relearn the correct form for recurve without reverting to muscle memory of those poor habits ingrained over many years. I've noticed huge changes in my form evident in my arrow grouping from the changes I've made. 🎉
