Trust the process - Renovating an Old Stone House in Portugal

Күн бұрын

Up next in our ongoing bathroom renovation, restoration, remodel, redesign or whatever you want to call it is some more hemp and lime plastering. This is the beginning of the finishing touches that will turn this once dated (and very pink) shower cubicly into a semi-modern, semi-traditional family bathroom.
We also take a short road trip in search for a nice piece of furniture to really tie the room together - in the form of something that we can up cycle and turn into a bathroom vanity.
I'll also share my number one plastering tip in this episode. Stay tuned!

Great your tip about plastering: Get someone else to do it 😂! I love your sense of humour. We all appreciate your effort filming, editing, uploading etc.,we all know it's not easy. Nothing which has value it's easy, therefore thank you for all your efforts. Looking forward to seeing your next video🤗

Those second-hand shops need to be visited regularly to finally get what you’re after. Took me ages to find an old iron Singer for bathroom and always on the search for old doors without woodworm😊. Tutorials on pointing, rendering are always welcome. Have a good weekend.

While "get someone else to do it" is not the most useful plastering tip, it's the most honest one I have ever heard.

Another great post Guy! I just feel guilty that here I am watching at my leisure and you've slogged for a week to entertain me. Wish I lived closer so that I could come over to volunteer. Trusting the process is great advice with anything. All we can do is our best... with anything. It's a beautiful bathroom, getting more so every episode. Still thinking of you both sitting after the construction is complete looking at the fruits of your labour, enjoying the view.

Here in France they are called Trocs and they truly are gems in finding odds and sods. In front of me on my desk is a 60's/70's style polished metal lamp which I bought from such a place some 15 years ago which is still going strong!

I can’t wait until I can buy one of the antique sewing machines and restore it 😀 There are also some truly beautiful old desks, with the hinged top, that I want to use as a knitting/crochet desk. We might need another house just to store all the beautiful furniture we want to buy/restore 😂

@@johnclark2333 not really, they are basically the same just by a different name. A Brocante describes a "flea market" whereas a Troc often sells on behalf of the owner on a commission basis.

When you're working along the top of the wall, how close to the very top can you put on plaster? Are protrusions done by a smaller trowel or can you get the plaster close enough with the standard? How quickly do you need to move the plaster on, within minutes or is there time to refine the finish? I am really looking forward to seeing how the windows will be fitted. You two are amazing at using older techniques combined with hemp to bring plastering to the modern day requirements.
@MAKEDOGROW
@MAKEDOGROW Сағат бұрын
You can get right to the top, using the same large trowel, just turn it so you use the short edge The trick is to put just a little plaster on the top of the trowel and then spread downwards with the trowel. The great thing with lime is there is a lot of working time. You do need to move it around rather fast, else the wall tends to absorb too much of the water, but you can spray it down again and then refine it a lot (even the next day this is still possible)

So I watch a couple of other channels trying to render a finish on old stone walls... There is one in Italy that's pretty good called Raising Voyagers - and they are just now getting to the finish on some of the walls. I mentioned your channel as the only other place where I've seen that. The other channels working with stone structures are still in the phase where you take out or demolish the bad stuff and then cut/shape the stone and replace it all. It's quite an amazing process... but I thought I'd mention it just in case you wanted to see how someone else does it.
