Hi Brother. I can relate! That's why I am focusing on other things. Decided won't work on research projects more than 2 in a year. I am watching your video after a long time. What all I can say I had the similar target to become a data architect within next two years (which is quiet difficult), in expense of my health. Later I changed my strategy as follows: 1. Clear 2 relevant assessments out of 20 in a month. 2. Write 2 research reports in a month (for my organization). 3. Sleep before 11:30 PM, Wake up at 7:30 (Want to gradually improve my timing, 30 minutes in a month). 4. I bought gym equipment a long time ago, including treadmill and all heavy machineries, but didn't use it until I stopped (paused to be precise) working on research papers with you. Now I workout daily and feeling quiet better. 5. Write 2 papers (at max 3) with you. What is the benefit? 1. Shanti (Peace). 2. Already cleared 7 exams out of 20. 3. Won 3 awards for writing excellent research reports and solving complex ML problems for my client. 4. Something special :) .

I think he has explained you all that is needed. Everything in life is equally important. Divide your time for each section including family and health, do things as per the assigned time. You need to slow down. I am at my forties still have the same passion. Only difference is that the speed of doing work slows down little bit but not always. Enjoy life, all achievements at certain stage of life may not matter.. So whether you become a Professor after 5 years or 10 years, more important is are you enyoying your work.

I'm 15 years old, and when I was exactly as old as Ava, my dad was equally busy, he was working in a different country and my mom took care of me completely. At a point of time, my dad decided to change his job cuz he wanted to enjoy the young years of his life, and also spend more time with us and his band!(he was in a band too, haha). So all I'm saying is, as a daughter, I cherish my days with my dad as a kid. I still remember my memories that I spent with my parents when I was a kid, and it makes me smile today! I'm not saying letting the fire in you succeed is a bad idea, it is definitely a great way to enhance your wellbeing and the josh is irreplaceable! But I know for sure, that the time that you spend at Norway with Ava and ur family right now, will be something that you will never forget!! Lots of love to your family🤩

Hello Prof. Arvind, Meself an Asst professor at one of the IITs and I have experienced the same burnout being occupied by so many works. From PhD guidance to publications, from project proposal writing to procurement of equipment added to that we have to take administrative work. I joined academia thinking a work life ballance but the life is so competitive at IITs it is very difficult to sustain this for long! In thrive of excellence the fun of life is loosing out.

Sticking to the working hours and doing your best on the things you chose to do brings out more results. Bonus, you feel happy and motivated that you succeeded.

Hello, hope you and family doing well...I am from consulting field and have experienced somewhat similar work related issues...I would suggest a) Prioritize top 2- 3 things in yr career that makes you feel motivated and you definitely enjoy doing and pursue those.. , b) Taking out time for your health, family should be ''non negotiable''...(this I had heard and made sense to me :))... like an hour a day for health and atleast good weekend time for family and ...c) Time for yr hobbies and things that de-stress are important too.... and good sleep... Overall a lil planning and prioritizing should help :) Best wishes.

Commenting from USA: Hi Arvind, I am a person from the Indian Himalayas who is married to an American. My wife and I did our Ph.D from a research University in the US! After Ph.D, she decided to become a professor and I quit academia all those years of stress and workload had burnt my soul, spirit and body! When I started my BA, than MA and than Ph.D in the US, from time to time I told my wife I can't take the stress and she told me to never give up saying things will get better but it never did! Today she is a full professor at a research University and she still has to publish, get external funding and do administrative work in the department besides teaching classes and supervising graduate and Ph.D. students! So my personal opinion is if you find the academic life at a research university stressful you might want to either work in the private sector in Norway since you said work life balance was better there or if you don't want to quit academia you could work at a teaching university, where the workload is much less at least that's how it is in the US. If you think that academic life at a research University is stressful now but will get better in the future when you are a full professor judging by my wife's career (assuming its similar in Norway) those stress and demands of your job is never going to go away even when you are a full professor. You seemed to be a very reflective and discerning person I am sure whatever you choose to do will be the best choice for your happiness and that of your family! Best wishes from USA!

Sir these are among the best years in my opinion. Taking things slow would be great. This time won't come back, these times with your daughter won't come back. Kids grow and become independent, so till then spending as much time as possible with them is the best. This is the circle of life. career is important, professional success is important but staying focused but at the same time focusing on other aspects are much more important. As you have said in many videos in the past like spending time with shailja maam and ava, yoga, your passion for singing etc. These are really what life is about, career is important but it comes with a cost. Take things slow sir, this is what I have also learned over the past year. Might be hard accept when one is ambitious about including myself. Rat race gives alot but it also takes away alot.

Hello Arvind...saw your video today and suddenly my whole professional life came in front of me as if I am watching my past...sad to hear what you are going through right now. I don't know if you will see my comment or not but still I will be writing this as a friend. The same situation happened with me when I choose to run rather than walk. I was working with ISRO ( Indian Space Research Organization) as a scientist and suddenly an opportunity came and I thought to run fast in career. Got a chance as an Assistant Professor in UAE University imagining to maintain work-life balance but got trapped in it. I got lost in that academic burden and ruined my personal life also ending up in divorce. What I learnt and I would rather suggest that flow with the wind in your career and give sufficient time to your family. Don't test your limit buddy, it's very painful 👍

OMG!! This video is so relatable!! I am currently a grad student in the US. I love learning and the US education system is very flexible and grants so much freedom, which is not there in India. I am interested in CS and Mathematics so I my workload is all of my CS workload and my self imposed, very rigorous mathematics workload . Most of my days are spent in isolation wondering, is it worth it ?? I fear burning out because I chose this path. I am a journey is more important than the destination kind of person, so I think one should slow down, and that's what I try to tell myself as well, because academia is not a sprint it's a marathon. I have heard a saying in academia that one gets tenure when research is the only thing they remember how to do. All the best for your journey!!

Practice moderation. following Passion doesn't mean one should keep other responsibilities at back seat and simply follow one path of liking (ignoring the overall balance of life). What's more important with following Passion is to be consistent in following it regularly. Even a little time one spends on developing his skill set in area of liking "on a daily basis" shall genuinely make one an expert in his field of pursuit. But, trick lies in developing power of dispassion and disconnect, with the subject at the right time so as to master the art of time management in life. Your sincere approach and quality of earnestness clearly shows and is the necessary ingredient which shall help achieve your goals in times to come. God bless!!! 👍

Sir it's really good that you are following your dream, but it is also important for you and your family to spend time together. Also, for your own mental health you should spend some time to do what you like to do, for example going to gym. If it takes one or two years more, it's okay. You need to be happy more than being successful. Best wishes for you and your family and thank you for sharing.

Sir ji, kafi dil se connect kara aapke saath maine. I also work as a teacher at colleges as a Visiting Faculty now. I use to work as an Assistant Professor before. I teach still photography and video production courses at the Journalism department. Based on my experience, I had little similar kind of workload, where I use to teach 85% and 15% used to be administrative work. I did that from 2017 to 2020. But salary growth in academics in New Delhi came to be way less than my expectations. Now, just because in my past experience I had worked as a freelancer, I had seen good growth in my career and pay as a freelancer. So now, I had decided to become a part-time teacher and teach at different places. 6 months down the line, now my pay as a part-time teacher for teaching 2 days a week is the same as what I used to get to teach 6 days a week. I can not suggest you anything, as you are a senior to me. But just wanted to share this experience of mine with you. With love from India ❤

Bhai , set your priorities. Its easy to give advises to anyone ,but i am also passing from same phase. Please keep focus on Yoga & Meditation, as well as come for Vacation in India for some time and visit with all all family members, it will give refreshment to your mind. Than, kick back again for your dreams with priorities . Put Family first, spare valuable time Shailza mam and Eva . You are inspiration for us. It's very difficult to express any things happening along with you, but felt very good, you have expressed it so beautifully. Big respect to you bro...

Sharing these things needs guts and I really appreciate that. I am also in the same situation as you but except for 12 hours I work for 15-16 hours a day because its work from home so extra time could be devoted. Solution is to think we cannot achieve all. We have to sacrifice one thing or another so prioritize things. If we have to choose between passion and necessity we should choose necessity.

I am incharge of power plant...I beg to differ on point that in industry after duty hours, you have no work.... At times we work continuously 72 hours without returning home when machine undergoes breakdown, Last year our plant undergone expansion we did 15-16 hours duty per day for 37 days continuously without any weekly off In normal running if machine undergoes breakdown on weekly off we work on that day without off Work is like this... hope it will give you sense of relief

Hi, just by chance this episode of yours came up in search and I started watching. When I came to know that you are also a mechanical engineer ,my interest grew to know little bit of your life. Actually I am also a mechanical engineer , did B tech from Nainital and M tech (passed1998) from IIT Kanpur, in mech. I am based out of London for last 17years. Overall I would say what I have seen and followed. Dear, just enjoy life and stay away from race unless it’s coming from deep inside of you. I have seen professors who got 100s of research papers to their credit, and boast about their numbers , but remember this was only one paper in 1905 which made Einstein famous and change way people looked at laws of physics. You can try to learn so much, and every field is ocean, so focus on something which most interest you, and deep-dive into that. The years which are passing are never going to be coming back, and how much knowledge you can fill in your mind by burning midnight oil, one fine day would not even exist. Hope you get my point, take it easy 😊👍🏻.

You know the answer yourself bro ! I became a VP in a bank at very young age after working for 12 hrs every day. I missed the time when my baby was growing up. I came back to India from Singapore after I thought I don’t talk to my parents that often, don’t spend time with my family that often. It’s not very easy india as well but better than what people settled in other countries think.

I too am in academics. I did excellent in academics initially till I graduated from IITK and switched over to finance in london in currency trading but on account of my priority at home I came back and took to academics. You cant defend yourself and take family's aspirations also into accounting while pursuing your goals.

Hi Bro, your burning out bcz ur thinking too much and carrying guilt of not able to stick to ur old routine. But if u want to grow in life then change is the only way and I see ur making efforts in that direction. Our energies drain out a lot bcz of overthinking and lack of clarity, thats it.. Simple steps that I recommend u : 1.Plan ur day in advance, write it down I meant and carry it in ur pocket, keep visiting that plan. Basically wen u write down ur day's plan, ur mind wont wander and it will b in ur control. Also wen u plan, u will take care of all ur activities and attendance whereever its needed. u will see that u saved lot of energy and lot of free time. Also, it will cut ur distractions 2. How much ur busy, take time for ur exercise, its v.imp. Have a good life..Cheers!!
