This is great Jarrod. It was a pleasure meeting you the other day in Hood River (I'm the husband of @sixbrummetts who commented earlier). Anyways, love this breakdown. Some ideas perhaps that I would enjoy in the future is perhaps getting even more of a detailed breakdown. Maybe separate episodes where one is the electrical breakdown. You have maybe three vans picked out with different electrical setups where you go over the costs of each set up. Then another episode that looks and pros/cons/costs of birch plywood vs. aluminum frame vs. laminated woods, etc. That way 'if' they list what type of components they have consumers can have a better understanding of the costs going into the build. Saying $25,000 product in vs. $40,000 product- what would be the main differences and where those breakdowns are in different systems? Hope that makes sense. Keep at it- though, this is good.

I love this Jarrod. I’ve been watching you since your L. A. days. I’ve learned so much from you and am always rooting for you on your various endeavors. I didn’t own a van when I started watching your videos but bought a turnkey, not custom build that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately my beautiful sprinter was destroyed in a fire. No fault of the builder, but rather a fatal mistake by a diesel mechanic. The mechanic failed to fully tighten down the fuel line after replacing the fuel filter. I’m still mourning that loss, and still fighting with insurance company. It’s been 8 months and still not a penny from insurance company. Whenever I do have this resolved I’ll be reaching out to you for a consult. I’m very conflicted about my next steps. I’m looking forward to seeing more of these. Thanks for all the info. Invaluable lessons.

It’s kind of like saying you can be a really good digital designer or a really good computer programmer. There’s some truth to what you’re saying. Using different parts of your brain and expressing different interpretations of skill/aesthetics. But I do know some engineers who are rare breeds and can be great at both. Generally speaking, I’ll trust a van maker over a movie maker. Lol.

Yama is a Canadian builder. Top tier. So you know that I took my van to Nomadik for service. Marc made a comment, something to the effect he knows my builder, excellent woodworker, my van can't be built, nobody can build a van like mine any more. Marc's a busy guy so I didn't chat him up on what he meant by that. I assumed that the "old school" builders can't make money on a van like mine because they can't charge enough for it. Then, I think it was in Couer d'Alene, I saw Jayco branded Class B and I think I understand. The Big Boys are in the van life/adventure van business now and they not only have them sitting on their lots ready to go (no 14-24 month wait), but they offer bank financing. So, the pressure on the custom builder. Add water, stir and presto, you're a van lifer! Sure the build quality isn't there, the options aren't there, layout choices are limited; you may not even have a say about the color scheme or fabric. But hey, it's only $217.49 a month (for the rest of your life). Coure d'Alene. That would be an excellent location for an Adventure Van Expo.

Thank you for this series, most needed indeed. So, my dilemma now; A few years back I purchased a "boutique" custom popup camper in Colorado. It was all the rage, and had one built sight unseen. After a few days/weeks I realized how "thrown-together" it was, and had to correct many mistakes, live with others, and finally sold it with little use. I am now scared $hitless with so many custom builders to find the reputable and experienced ones so I don't have to go behind the walls to check that they used the proper wire gauge or find leaks. As an example, I like the Storytellers overall, but need more customization (larger fridge, etc.) Also wondering if it would be advantageous to buy an RVIA certified. I would like to know your top 5 or 10 builders, no need to call out the bad ones, they will close down by default.
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci 22 күн бұрын
My simple and quick response to this is Storyteller is not good (in my opinion) and there’s no harm taking your time finding the right builder for you. On my consulting calls I spend 15-20 minutes learning the person before I even make suggestions on builders

It's true - totally different skill sets. Someone who's a great builder is into engineering and fabricating and building and working with the materials to make a design come to life. Content is branding, photography, writing/editing, presenting, marketing, and selling the product lines and the people/professionals of the company online to generate new business. Like in a big corporation, the marketing department wouldn't do what the engineering, IT or software developers do and vice versa.

This is going to be interesting. I've had a few run ins with builders of custom homes, vans, catamarans and RV's who seem to think that they know it all because they have won a few awards, have a social media following or use the most expensive brand names money can buy. Craftsmanship and value is not exclusive to brand names, just because your components in a van come from the yacht or precision machine/ lab industry, doesn't mean you built a yacht on wheels, nor should your asking price reflect that. I've spent a lot of years in R&D, material science, building science, engineering, construction and developing certifications and engineering standards and I'm constantly amazed at people who prove the Dunning-Kruger effect when you tear apart their build and they try to justify what they did and why.

Van building in the end is relatively newer field. That is kinda important to remember.In my experience I think simple or minimal should always be the way to go if possible. I have witnessed so many ppl with over the top builds that use like 12% of it’s capacity. That said I am not going to tell anyone what to do or how to spend ect. If you can by all means do it. Where I think alot of issues arise is when people with limited funds try and look for a good deal and they probably could have done it themselves. They get what they pay for and yikes. Then again I have a;somseen vad work on builds ppl hafe paid alot for. The whole content creator and builder thing I do not think is controversial. It’s your opinion. I know a couple amazing content creators that have built really good vans. My point is you have to be careful sometimes when you get into that chest beating of “ this is controversial” when it’s an opinion from your experience and also not exactly factual. As someone that has done many inspections for people in my field you can pick apart anything.

Hey Jarrod, Thanks for the honest information. You mention using specialist woods rather than Baltic birch or bamboo, which woods do you recommend instead? Also why aren’t you keen on 80/20? Thanks
@JarrodTocci
@JarrodTocci 21 күн бұрын
Don’t get me wrong I love using Baltic birch and bamboo as a finish (cabinet fronts) or a bamboo veneer as well as drawers. Those woods at 1/2” won’t warp like other plywood’s do. To make up the “carcass” I like using liteply aka Garnica plywood. It’s a poplar based with foam core that makes it 30% lighter than standard plywood, and I’d use 3/4” for that! This method I would only do for vans, trailers or tiny homes that weight is necessary. For a typical home reno I would not do it this way. Lastly with that liteply you can either paint, use laminates, or veneer which is great. Extruded aluminum is not weight saving at all and difficult to work with. To me, it doesn’t make sense to use in a van build. I used to like it until I used it

Maybe you’re overthinking this a little too much 😂 I call it like I see it, yes it’s that simple. What is an average builder? I think there are up and coming builders just like any industry. But the ones that are up and coming that I know still know their place. I’m talking about the builders that build 1 van (maybe 2) and think they are the best van builder the internet has seen. There’s a lot of immaturity in this space and it’s starting to show

@JarrodTocci 8 күн бұрын
General contractors also take tests to become certified. They also have the connections to get the subcontract work done. The problem with van builders and tiny home builders is there is NO restrictions. RVIA is a thing but not enforced and honestly not a good stamp of approval either. I’ve tried making a certificate program but simply not worth the investment of my time and money. I have something in the works with a bigger company tho

Jarrod, I love you but you over explain what you are doing. Just do it, if it makes sense we will keep watching and you can watch the metrics. Just get to the content. You could build a bigger audience by explaining less and just getting straight to the content. You don’t even have to transition to your sponsor like a newscaster, just say: I’d like to thanks blah today and do the transition. Better yet just do the sponsorship message in the main content, changing to another video with different lighting, energy and sound isn’t as seamless. Like I said, love ya but I think you can cut out so much explaining and your content would be more compact and compelling!

“The economy is in the pooper” is an objectively false statement. Historically low unemployment rate, growth outpacing inflation, interest rates at historical averages, positive GDP for over a year, and inflation is almost down to acceptable levels. And those inflation rates were lower than all major economies around the world. Add all that up, and take into account the major stock market indexes are at, or near historic highs. So to claim the economy is not strong is simply untrue. Almost forgot, US oil production has never been higher.
