When describing Billy Cobham, the terms that come to mind are powerful, dynamic, honest, studied, commanding, skilled, confident, and well respected! His experience in the Army is fascinating as is his Miles encounter! A fascinating interview and insights by a legendary musician!!! His observation regarding drummers concentrating on looking good and not sounding good is amazing and something I've never heard before!

Around 1979....i went to see Mr. Cobham in SanFrancisco at Geneva drum world ....when I got there and looked at the center of the room this amazing man came out and sat down. He was Surrounded by drums all of the way around himself! Maybe around 50 to 75 drums and cymbals ...... He played for an hour straight and I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. Until then I had heard many drummers Peter Erskine...Tony Williams etc etc NO ONE...affected me until this very day like Billy did! Thank you FUNKNSTUFF.......... for this interview with the undisputed KING!

Steve Arrington was talking about going to see Curtis Mayfield, Frank Zappa and some band named Mahavishnu Orchestra(lol) in 1972 on a festival circuit. He kept looking for the orchestra lol and saw Cobham with the big gong behind him and the drum kit in front. Once they started playing he said he was never the same. Cobham changed his life. This was the Inner Mounting Flame album and Meeting Of The Spirits is what he first heard and he had to rethink how he approached deciphering music.
