Now, since he has called her dishonest, he has opened himself up for critique. If he gets anything from that, it is self-initiated (as critiques come also with the coveted caveat of opening oneself to counter-criticism, and an academic and pastor like Gavin surely ought to know this). Honestly, they should just let things settle. But neither person is responsible for the ways others respond to other people in their names since, as far as I have seen, neither person is directing people to any action.

While I am dissappointed in the greater "conservative" Christian community's lack of discernment, I can't say I'm surprised. Many want to uphold a sensationalized, politicized culture war against the "woke mob" instead of pursuing critiques that are full of truth and love. Practically, it also shouldn't be surprising that Megan wouldn't be concerned with faithful representation when she works for a company that profits off of sensationalism and politicization. Please don't misunderstand me: there are plenty of prevailing cultural ideas that are incompatible with a biblical worldview and should be critiqued. But the way that many people have gone about their critiques, particularly over the last 4 years, have frankly been unacceptable. We are witnessing the fruit of the prioritization of political agendas over the prioritization of Christ-honoring critique. If nothing else, this entire ordeal has been a great reminder that Christ is the only one we can trust.

I'm a Southern Baptist and fairly conservative both theologically and politically, and one thing I'll say that I find really counterproductive in both of those camps is the tendency, especially amongst fundamentalists, to draw a line in the sand with all the things they dislike on one side of it and all the things they like on the other side of it, and if you tolerate, much less like, anything on the opposite side of the line, then you're "one of THEM". We need more grace.

May the good Lord continue to preserve you, Dr. Ortlund. May Megan be given a heart of humility, truth and love. I grew up very left-leaning, then bit hard on the "red pill" in response to the errors of the left that I witnessed in college. I got jaded with politics and generally left it behind, even though I still leaned right. But as I came to truly know Christ, I have had little desire to be involved in political conversations - not because it's unimportant or not worth having discussion, but because most conversations are don't point me or anyone else to Jesus. The good Lord will judge those unrepentant of their worldliness, regardless of whether they profess faith in Christ. Shake the dust off your feet (like the apostles in Acts) and move on to the next person who wants to talk about Jesus.

This whole thing is a shame. The very reporting tactics that I can’t stand in the main stream media she showed she was using those same tactics. Pulling quotes out of context to support her viewpoints. I was disappointed listening to Frank Turek’s podcast that she was on. She claimed she reached out to each “shepherd” for in person interviews but was turned down or not responded to. What’s hard here is there are items in her book that I agree with but could not believe you were included in it Gavin. A similar thing happened a few years ago when Dr. Michael Brown wrote a book and somehow wrongly accused Joseph Prince of some things he had never believed or taught. Dr. Brown then met Prince, sat down together, apologized, and clarified all things publicly through the internet and acknowledged that he had made a mistake by naming names without firstly reaching out to Prince and asking for his permission. I think that's an honesty that everyone should expect here from Megan as the author. She is trying to do public discernment, and she needs to come clear firstly by acknowledging her mistake here.

The passage specifically refers to ligation in which the judge presiding has no standing in the church, which is simply no longer the case. See verse 6: “but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers?”

Pastor Ortlund, you are a great encouragement to me! I'm a person that struggles with irritability and anger, and my personality often manifests as a challenger/debater type. Peaceable disagreement is something I've always struggled with. The way you navigate through disagreement peacefully is an incredible inspiration to me and by modeling my own posture after your's - and after Christ's by extension - my own has been sanctified (though only modestly at this point). An interesting thing to me about this whole controversy has been the surprising amount of people that hold you in suspicion or low esteem, or were willing to do so at the drop of a hat. As someone who has been watching your content for a while, I never would've imagined it. If someone told me "_____ has just been publicly accused of drawing lines in the sand and questioning people's faith over political issues" and asked me to fill in the blank, I would've guessed everyone else on the planet before guessing you. Such has been the consistent attitude of humility and irenicism that you've demonstrated in your content. We are in a spiritual battle. I’m shocked at how many profile Christian are slandering their brothers and sisters over minor issues. People make mistakes and sometimes rather big ones - like not contacting people you're writing about... We have no right to tell others that God demands that they adopt a particular political ideology that has nothing to do with Scripture. If I had been an Ortlund fan prior to that video, I would have unsubscribed immediately and warned others about him after having watched it. He thoroughly discredited himself in it.

It is young earth creationists who are bringing in their assumptions to the text rather than reading the text for what it is. The text was not meant to be taken literally in a way a modern Westerner would take it. Plus, Gavin's reading of those passages, and he says as much, doesn't say "therefore it was evolution." No. He believes in evolution because of the science, but he doesn't make the Bible say it was evolution, because an authentic reading of the text does not have anything to say about whether evolution was used or not.

What is visible in this is that the spirit behind this book is not of the Lord. The fruit the author is showing is not one of discernment but rather of another political agenda. What I take from this is that slander can also come from our own political and theological camp and discernment is of extreme importance when it comes to knowing what to believe and who to read.

Unfortunately Alyssa doesn't seem interested. I absolutely loved everything she was doing when she started her KZbin channel, just really solid stuff. But her overall method of engagement is disappointing. It seems to me (though I'm often wrong) that she has a tendency to pick fights with other unsuspecting Christians or Christian movements and then cry foul when they respond. This is exactly what happened with her ongoing treatment of "NAR," her treatment of the Asbury Revival, and her treatment here with Gavin. I'm not sure what she expects when she walks up to a tea party and slings mud in their faces, but she seems surprised that they're rather defensive about it. That these are brothers and sisters she's besmearing makes it all the more sad.

I came to Christ through social media, so did my husband and I learn more about Christ on social media than the 2 hour trip to church. I still go for fellowship but not much is useful there on the churches I have been to. I learnt so much from Gavin as well. Social media is a tool that God can use but the devil can use it too so the question is what are you using it for?
