I think the reason Chihiro cries when she eats the onigiri is actually tied up with how brave she's had to be so far. Haku says the onigiri will give her back her strength. The crying allows her to let out her feelings of stress and I think that's part of why she gets her strength back. She's allowed to show weakness at that moment and it helps her to be stronger later on, because she's had time to cry about it, and now she can get up and go on doing something about it.

The other video with the same challenge did have Ponyo's ramen as the reward. I wanted that more than all the other meals in that video. One of them was dumplings like the ones Chihiro's parents ate (best try not to eat dish, surpassing Kiki's oatmeal, Satsuki's fish and rice bento and Sheeta's chunky vegetable soup).

Well considering eating an onigiri is LITERALLY on my OFFICIAL BUCKET LIST (right up there with “going deep sea fishing” and “seeing a solar eclipse”) I would’ve broken down for that second dish in a heartbeat.
