health note on the subject of 'toilette etiquette' : instead of worrying about seat repititions; EVERYONE should close the lid after every bathroom trip. during flushing the surface of the water loses cohesion; making liquid particles aerosolize it's not just a few drops splashing around your piss water becomes airborne mist- every time. depending on how strong a flush you're working with those airborne particles can travel up to 20 feet, so if your toilet is in the same room as your toothbrush...

Their final conclusion was that regardless of how you handle your toilet the entire planet just has a uniform thin layer of airborne feces deposited onto it.

The lid is there to keep the poop water from splashing onto your toiletries. Putting the seat down is not about etiquette, it's about health and safety. If you leave the lid up when you flush, you might as well dip your toothbrush straight in the bowl!

Technically, if you keep the top lid down, then both parties would have 2 seat repetitions. Guys would have to lift both at the same time, thus having a heavier lift, but it would still be the same repetition events. Personally, if it is a late-night trip, I prefer sitting down anyway and do the "Yoda face, eyes closed head up tilt" doze while I'm there.

The only valid argument for putting the seat down is doing so before flushing to prevent fecal matter from being spread. Far more is spread into the air and by extension all surfaces in a bathroom (things like exposed oral hygiene products) than people realize. It's the same reasoning why its more hygienic for guys to pee sitting down because no where as much spread though splashing. Aside from that if I can remember to adjust the seat for myself so can any other person.

Nobody should leave the toilet seat up. You should put the seat down AND close the lid also, so when you flush you don't spray faecal matter all over your bathroom. Personally I've recently discovered the comfort of just sitting down no matter what number I'm doing, screw standing up and causing splashing or risking accidentally missing. Plus I can put my phone on the side of my bath and watch a video whilst I do my business.
