Hello, Brian. As always great lesson and great sound. Mark Knopfler use this intervals in Sultanes of Swing, and are so melodic.

I hear those fills in old country songs a lot and love them and double stops. Willie uses them a lot.

Thanks Brian! I never knew this, but there are a couple of songs I play that use this shape in their fills - Three Dog Night, Never Been to Spain, and CCR, Fortunate Son, been playing them for years and always wondered about it, very useful as always!

Fantastic lesson Brian, thanks! I never realized that w/in the E shape bar chord there's both a major 3rd double stop and, using the same notes inverted, a minor 6th double stop--very cool! The 6th interval licks you demo are so melodic, and gives me a lot of new and interesting ideas👍

Absolutely fantastic. I have begun trying to use sixths and too often fall back into going step by step up the scale. Just doing the three, five, and seventh is way cool.

This was a very interesting lesson. I heard this before but never gave it much thought of how it was done. Very cool. Would like more of these theory based lick breakdowns in the future.

I believe the pattern for a Major chord = Major 6, minor 6, Major 6 For a minor chord = minor 6, Major 6, minor 6. For a Dominant chord = Major 6, minor 6, minor 6.

Think i got most of it but bit unsure when sliding up, got the notes you had to start from but unsure when you play a major or minor 6th or is it just by ear. Please excuse me if it is a really dumb question that has been explained but I didnt get. Thanks for another great video.

Is it fair to say you need to know the 7 chord notes and also where they are as you go up the neck to play this? It sounds more like memorization than being able to play this on the spot based on knowing the theory?
@crashdaddy261
@crashdaddy261 Жыл бұрын
Try to think of it more as "familiarization" than memorization. Like, if you were in school, you wouldn't remember all your classmates' names by pouring over a list -- you'd probably just pick them up after going there a while. It's a lot like that. And with that in mind, I believe good 'ol Brian there could absolutely just play them on the spot. Just like you could walk into your classroom and immediately recognize Jimmy or Danny or Laura. I hope that helps, because it doesn't have to be hard at all.

Chord function is the answer!! For example if you know that you are playing on the I chord or IV chord of any key, then it will me a major 7th chord. Starting on the "E shape" of that chord (as we did in this lesson video), you have your first shape (m6 interval)...next one is up 3 frets and you have your second shape (M6 interval)...next one is up 3 frets and you have your 3rd shape (M6 interval). Thes "shapes" and spacing between notes will remain constant across all keys for every instance of the "I chord" and the "IV chord" of the key (same with the other chords of the key). Always think in terms of CHORD FUNCTION!!

@EricC o “FUNCTION” Per Webster Dictionary: “the action for which a person or thing is specially fitted or used or for which a thing exists. • Another Description: the repetition of a musical theme with modifications in such elements as rhythm, melody, harmony, key, tempo, and accompaniment. • My own description: Frequency is faster or slower or up and down based on how far you change the distance. Fret by Fret.
