I used to work on a farm until a car accident shattered my back. While I can no longer do a 400 acre farm 10 hours a day / 6 days a week, I have found doing whatever form of gardening I can not only helps with physical rehabilitation, but keeps my mental health up since it is reminiscent of how I was able to function before a person on opiates crashed into my car and changed my life. So, if I were to win this, I would use it for my small personal garden / semi permaculture I have been setting up as a therapy treatment for me where I grow plants for my family, which includes dogs, lizards, and fish (they all get various herbs and produce I grow), and when I have access, used to help people in my neighborhood obtain free produce (I put plans and produce on my front yard for people to take for free with the intention to build one of those "free library" set ups to put it all in, once I have the funds and now that I am at a point in my recovery where I can actually do this).

This is my second year of gardening, I'm planning on starting pepper seed, tomatoe seed , and 10 different herbs. In the raised beds I'm going to have green and wax beans, peas, cucumbers, 3 varieties of potatoes, melons. I've learned so much from your site. Most of my life I've had a brown thumb so I figured I'd give one more try at the age of 61 and low and behold I had alot of success and figured I would start my second year with starting my own seeds. Thank you with this site and several other sites I've learned so much.

I will be growing peppers, peppers and more peppers! Last year 152 tomato plants as space is limited, the family now knows what tomatoes are must grow each year and enough jars and tomato skin powder for 2 years. This year is the year of the pepper! Sauces, rubs, pickles and fresh eating. We will create recipes and determine which peppers will be must grow each year. So, I will soon be starting peppers of all kinds grilling, smoking, hot, sweet fruity all the pepper flavors. We're so excited. I love having my adult kids and grandchildren and my mother (82) in our 2 kitchens and involved as a team. So blessed!

I am helping to plant and operate a Freedom Farm Academy. We will be growing and helping our community learn how to grow their own perennial food forest. I have loved making my own soil mix in the past and am super excited to try this recipe, as I have not yet used coco coir (only peat moss). I will literally use this for ALL my seed starts (peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, etc) as well as for my potting mix for many indoor plants and herbs. Thank you for all that you do to help create a brighter and more beautiful self-sustaining world for us all.

I make seed starting mix with 2 part sieved compost, 2 part coco coir, and 1 part perlite. I pack that into the cell then top with 1/8-1/4" pure coir, put my seed on top of that then sprinkle vermiculite lightly over the seed. The seedlings can easily take root into the coir layer and add they get bigger they reach that compost layer and have the nutrients they need to stay happy for a long time. This method works great for me!

I use the bigger coco coir and put it in my raised beds to help with not having to water as much. I put it in the bottom middle part of each bed and then cover with soil. Really helps especially when i can't be in the garden for a few days to water. I didn't know a finer version even existed until this video. Thanks Luke, this was helpful!

I am currently growing 4 different tomatoes: Boxcar Willie, Floradade, Arkansas Traveler, and Everglades. I also have Keystone Giant Bell Peppers and Sweet Banana Peppers. There is something so incredibly exciting about watching my "babies" grow. There is no going back to purchasing plants from any box store. I will be using a vertical planter this spring. I did this mix for the first time last year to grow all my starts, tomatoes got huge and were so easy to plant. No fungus gnats! That is until I bought strawberry starts that had been outside at a supermarket and brought them inside. Lesson learned. Coco coir really does go a long way. I used one of those whole blocks and made a wheel barrow full! Looking forward to getting my onions and peppers and herbs started.

I have switched to Coco coir in all my mixes, and it is fantastic, as well as much more economical than buying bagged seed-starting or potting mixes. The lack of sticks and wood chunks makes it great for both seed mixes and soil blocks. I really like this simple recipe, and will be using it for all of my seeds this year. I am happy that your Loco Coco Coir has been reformulated, and just ordered a batch.

I get too many gnats from store bought stuff 😓 and I’m trying to be more sustainable with my gardening practices. Anyways, I transplanted a dill plant into it and so far, it’s doing great! My goal is to get a big coco coir brick and start all my seedlings in my own potting soil. I will be starting strawberries, onions and celery soon. Then onto peppers, tomatoes, eggplant etc. next month. I can’t wait to see the results and have fewer (if any) gnats in the house! Thank you for sharing this recipe. Also, trifecta plus is amazing. 2nd year gardening here, and I have had fantastic results with coco coir instead of peat moss for seed starting and potting mixes. I haven't tried vermiculite, just perlite and organic AP fertilizer for seed starts, but I do add worm castings to my potting mix too. I like getting the smaller, individual bricks because it easily fits the tub I normally use for mixing soil.
