I have an obsession with art supplies, and so I'm always experimenting. Some people go tanning, get hair and nails done. My self care, my treat to myself is a few art supplies on a regular basis, and if I hate them I have children that also love art, and I also have the privlidge of sharing my love of art with my clients at work too.

i've been binging several of your videos in the past few days, and i have to say your approach on art is a breath of fresh air. i struggle with allowing myself to be free and just "go out there." many artists who claim to live by that policy only really seem to mention it in a video or so. you, on the other hand, frequently mix your commentary/reviews with actual tips and life advice. i've sort of been struggling lately in general too so your channel has been fantastic

Ha-ha. No danger of me getting a perfect painting, so I gave up on that particular chase. You were a big factor in this development. Yes! On the more color pencil watercolor combo videos. I have a huge box of Prismacolor Premier I treated myself to that needs more love. As for paying for art classes. There is so much amazing free stuff out there, that I can ride on it for a very long time as a novice. If I pay for my lessons, I feel obliged to invest my time into consuming them entirely and practicing what is taught. Which is great, but it does take time away from actually doing things that I want to do and that bring me joy. So thank you, Kristy, so very much for sharing all these joyful treats with us!

my favorite way to blend pencils is with a clear blending pencil. though sometimes i use rubbing alcohol too... i often add colored pencils over watercolor. you can add shading quick and easily to small things that way. you are actually flattening the paper fibers down when you burnish, ( which can be easy to do just by pressing too hard even when not trying to). and if you get the fibers flat enough you will not be able to add any more layers! so thats why watercolor paper or a good multimedia paper is best for colored pencils. lol is that whats wrong with me? mauve and purple ptsd! haha, definitely my least favorite colors are dark purple and mauve! edit to add- great video as always! i love your joyfulness, always there to inspire and get me motivated!!

Lucky 🍀 you with the Caran D’Ache Luminance color pencils. But I can’t complain or be jealousI have plenty of nice art supplies…really plenty. I haven’t splurged yet on the high-end color pencils and am quite content with my modest set of Prismacolor Premier (plus my vintage 90 color set of Berol Prismacolors from the 90s) and FC Polychromos along with small sets of a bunch of others. And LOTS of other paints, pens, (wc, oils, oil pastels, Pan Pastels, paper crafting and lots of other mixed media supplies.) One of my little art supply thrills is ordering handmade and sample sets of watercolors. Love, love, love, doing that!

I love the granulated texture of color pencils on paper for certain effects. I normally use color pencils on top of alcohol or water-based markers. I have tried layering base colors with watercolors or Inktense and then add bits with India ink and color pencils. My brand to go is Prismacolor. Being creative is a must, and I found a lady here that has created two new hacks with color pencils and has shared the recipes of her experiments. One is like liquid color pencils with broken cores and shavings, dissolving them in thinner. The other one is with oils pastels, linseed oil, mineral oil and bee wax. This last experiment is great for big areas or color like skies and fields. The project I want to try is a purple cactus with prickly pears using a pyrograph and Derwent Inktense. It is a wood board I got some weeks ago that I can transform to a clipboard easily… but i do want to decorate it. Your landscape is lovely, I know you like flowers, but I definitely like your videos with landscapes. I want to try the Norwegian houses at some point during this summer.

Yup, I use them in coloring books mainly, but like your "experiment", I know you can use them in mixed media type art. I feel colored pencils are easier than watercolor to use in someways, and they aren't the rabbit hole that watercolors and inks (all manner of inks) are with the pigments, shimmer, chromatography-color/pigment separating , shading, sheening qualities. Pencils are straight forward in comparison. Your example makes me want to take my pencils and use them in something other than coloring books. Thanks for sharing!

I absolutely love this and you have given me some ideas for a piece that I’ve been working on! That’s what I love about your channel. There are always so many tidbits of wisdom that I come away with! I find my joy in art period. There was a time when I had gotten discouraged and all but turned away from my art. But it kept kind of popping through. My husband knew if he came home and I was painting or drawing, I was depressed. Eventually, I figured out that it was because art makes me happy. I need it to feed my soul! As for colors I have a adverse relationship with… red and brown. I’m getting better about red; but, brown is just bleh. Conversely, juicy purple makes me so happy!

This is how I do like all my mixed media and coloring pages lol I always have watercolors somehow either as bases of color for trees, leaves backgrounds or anything really and then go over in pencil to add my details and blends after. It always comes out beautifully@! These supplies were made for each other I think!I especially like to add metallic watercolor accents to almost everything! Also just in case no one else said anything, the textured paper is best for color pencils so I bet that hot press once you get used to your new lumies will make beautiful pieces! I like to use the me teintes from canyon, bristol vellum cardstock by springhill and I really love the fabriano studio fat pad watercolor paper. I wish I could share it here but my pencils work great over my watercolors on that paper and everything comes out super smooth. The lummies are soft and pigmented so it'd best to get your layers in quicker but you can do more layers easily especially on like watercolor paper and oh yeah,I use the smoother side of the me teintes paper. Hope this helps. It truly is like watercolors perfect sister. Thanks for the great content! I'll have to try pencils first more. I usually do my sketch with color pencil but use my watercolor pencils or paints to fill certain areas before touching it up with more pencil.

@@KristyRice they sure do-especially if you want to do lots of layers as they have the physical strength to resist lots of abrasion and the depth of tooth so that you can do lots of layers before the paper gets too slick and shiny to take anymore.

Your happy demeanor is contagious and I'm grateful it is contagious. I am excited by the video today, using watercolor wash over colored pencils what a good idea and has a great effect. I thought the green over green made the area look like a field. The texture of the paper showing through was new to me. Usually, I spend a lot of time trying to get rid of the white spot. The watercolor wash laid just enough color to pull the field to gather. The brush strokes of blue in the background added movement to the composition. I interpreted it as rain running down the hillside the way the stroke peeked out below the field. I loved the clouds and the detail you obtained. I have trouble with clouds. I mostly use colored pencils as a medium of choice. Unfortunately, I cannot translate what is see in my mind's eye to paper. So I work in coloring books. I plan to add this technique to my books. My discipline lacks in the drawing realm, which is upsetting to me because my father and son have this ability. I feel left out. haha I have bookmarked this video. Happy Painting and now happy coloring to you. God Bless. jax

I am just learning watercolor. That's what led me to your channel. I am much more comfortable with my pencils. So when my brush work isn't up to par, or I can't make the paint behave the way I envisioned it, falling back on my colored pencils can save it. I have brought many paintings out of that ugly stage with colored pencils. Then again I have also saved some of my pencil work with the application of gel pens or permanent markers. Mix media attitude is a life saver or art saver, whatever works.

I use white colour pencil (usually Prismacolor) on top of watercolour to add highlights a lot, and occasionally a dark complementary colour to add shadows. I also have used graphite pencils both over and under watercolour, essentially creating a lightly coloured pencil drawing rather than a painting (I’m always happier drawing than painting when doing representative art!) The looser style you use is something I really would like to be able to try. My art tends to be rather over tightly controlled and unrelaxed. I guess I just need to give myself permission to play with the unfamiliar and not worry about messing up.

Hi Kristy! The smoother paper you use for colored pencils, the less the colored pencil will "stick" to the paper. When you burnish, you're flattening out the tooth of the paper and preventing future layers of pigment from being applied to the top. I think we're used to wanting to see the paper burnished with color because we think that we're not done unless zero paper tooth is seen. That's not necessarily the case with colored pencil. Other mediums like any paint medium and markers, sure, you might want to fill that tooth in. Colored pencils are completely different. And I had that burnishing habit too, but I broke it. It also makes my hand hurt . Colored pencil is one of the sloooooowest mediums you can get when it comes to the beautiful colored pencil results we want. It can take a week + to finish a small project. With Copics, watercolor, acrylic, oil... You apply the color and it's there. With colored pencil, not so much, and it takes SooOooOo many layers to build up the depth and interest. I hope that helps!

Glad you used those because a lot of the lower budget ones do smear when added with water (and those aren’t the watercolor ones), but hey that might be something for me to try and who knows -it could work out. I love using the Lumi buff titanium pencil to blend. It’s amazing as I use it with all my different colored pencil brands . Would love to just use more of my supplies and not worry what the outcome is. I plan on trying to use my twinkling H20’s shimmer watercolors more and using the CD neocolor 2 watercolor crayons and see what I can do with those.

I enjoy using colored pencils with water color. They are great before and after painting. When the painting is dry, they help bring out some details and add to more to the composition. Experiment with pastel pencils and gel pens, charcoal and graphite (make sure it's dry).......awesome!!! I also sketch a lot on water color paper to add water color at later time.

A couple of things. Experimenting is fun and so glad you give people permission to play. Hotpress watercolour paper is exactly what many coloured pencil artists use because it takes so many layers and you can blend it with odourless mineral spirits. For work you want to keep never put watercolour over your pencils. Its great under but will not be archival used over . These pencils are wax-based but not waxy and lovely to use aren't they?

@@clairemoore2753 Caran d’ache states that they are a mixture. I use this term as they behave more like a wax in that they blend a bit more than they layer.

@@KristyRice It’s because the watercolour won’t stick long term to the wax and oil that are used as binders in the pencils. I suppose if you sealed it but you don’t normally seal either medium,as you know with watercolour, so not sure how that would go. I often use watercolour and Inktense as underpaintings for coloured pencil.

i still have the 120pc prismacolor set i bought in my early 20's (like you, not say'n when that was ;) ) i also have the same set from my mother in law from her collage days and a 75pc i got in my late teens... i don't think i will ever run out of them. i love to use them over the top of water color to add shadows and highlights. sometimes the magic just works and when it does time has no meaning, and something that sounds impossible takes shape under your fingers. solvents make the pencils smooth almost like paint. mixed media is not something i often do, i love the way it looks (most of the time) but most of the time i just don't do it. not unlike using the metallic watercolors i have LOL i hate pink (petal, barbie, pepto bismal)

Ironically as I'm watching your video, I am doing a colored pencil portrait of a dog. I have been accruing watercolor supplies, and I need to start doing some experimenting on the best "cheap," watercolor paper video that you recently suggested / that I purchased. I got it last week and love the feel of it. I bought the Gen Crafts pad and the Artisto sketch pads. I have a wide range of student grades to a Holbein pan set. Now I need to get out of colored pencils comfort zone to the "scary" watercolor zone to dive into headfirst from thinking about it to doing it. Loved your mixed media experiment today. I am so glad I found your channel, for one I love your teaching style and your positive energy. I want to add that hot press watercolor paper is very popular amongst colored pencil artists.

My project I have been hemming and hawing about is trying to make a knit sweater. I have made blankets, scarves, shawls, and hats, and now I want to make a garment. I am a bit scared because fitted items require an understanding of gauge, and I am newish to knitting (beginner-intermediate). It's funny because I watch these videos while I knit to get inspired. So far, I am planning to try some of the techniques I have seen on this channel the next time I color in my coloring books with my husband.

Christy, you just purchased the most unique unusual specialty colored pencils. These pencils are definitely not your wax or oil pencils. The Luminance pencils are a bit drier, not as creamy as a soft wax pencil like Prismacolor Premier. These pencils will blend already laid down wax or oil-colored pencils together at the end of your coloring. If you are a bit frustrated with the lay down of these pencils it is not you but the uniqueness of the binders of these pencils. Colored pencils in a second !!!!

I started with pencils, boring. Then watercolorpencils, better... and then watercolour and stick to it... Burnishing you better do with a colorless pencil. So the colour stays vibrant. Or with the lightest colour from your blend. Caran d'ache for me are the number one for pencils and pastels... thats the golden set... lol. I am using color pencils to finish up my watercolorpaintings...
