as an equestrian, Barbara's style of teaching is so refreshing. so many trainers forget to emphasize the "be kind to the horse" part of the sport, so I'm so so thankful that she made such a big deal about it. it's supposed to be a partnership, not just the rider demanding the horse do something.
@recoveringintrovert7172 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of it termed as a partnership, and I think that's lovely. If you really love your horse, it should be a priority to make sure he/she is comfortable and happy 😊
@jenniferhiemstra52282 жыл бұрын
I’m not an equestrian in the least, and haven’t sat on a horse in YEARS…but like, why would one NOT be kind to the horse?? That always just made sense to me, it’s no secret that they’re sensitive to their riders’ mood! But man, I’m moving to the south next year and I’m officially inspired to do this myself…just as a fun hobby though 🥰 🐎

It was also great to see someone who emphasizes teaching people the whole thing, not just riding. The brushing, the tacking up, they even gave Smartee a bath LOL; some riding schools (I've seen it mostly with English-focused schools honestly) have lesson horses pre-tacked, the kids just learn the "buttons" and that's it. I learned from a family friend who was certified, but luckily she taught me everything; on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays she had ME do the turn-out/turn-in. She's a big reason why I was able to open my own barn eventually. It's so important that riders are taught from the beginning that the care of the horse is important too. Horses aren't tools. They're thinking, feeling animals that deserve respect and care.
@Tinyvalkyrie4102 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferhiemstra5228 There are a few reasons. First, because what is considered kindness is by no means universal. Are spurs kind? Are bits (the metal that goes in the mouth)? Are saddles? Are whips? There is not at all a consensus on what is and isn’t kind. The second reason is tradition. Have you heard of the term “breaking” a horse? Or seen videos of cowboys getting on a horse that has never been ridden, and having the horse panic and throw them off in a movie? This is completely unnecessary, but it’s been the traditional way to do things in a lot of disciplines for ages. People just think it’s ok. The third reason is that it’s competitive. When you focus on the competition part of equestrianism rather than the experience as a whole, people tend to take short cuts and lose track of the fact that winning isn’t everything. And the last reason is money. Horses and their upkeep are extremely expensive, so some people end up assuming you can buy that relationship, that they are owed by the horse. Equestrian sports are very diverse, and approaches vary wildly… with varying degrees of kindness and effectiveness.

I would love to see Matt try Hunters and Ariel try Eventing, but with life, Ariel being a business woman, a Mom and Wife, Matt having work/relationship-fitting in riding can be challenging. Adding to that costs associated with it, and obviously the inherent risk factor. Finding horses that can do more advanced movements is also expensive and requires more than just a day to achieve. I’d love to see old videos of them riding! It would be amazing to see where Matt eventing-I’m on the East Coast (based in Ontario), but I’m guessing Matt did West Coast, and Ariel showed Mid West? I've been riding for about 7 years and have trained mostly in hunters/eq and showjumping and I have come across a few awful trainers. I had one German dressage trainer and she made me feel so shitty about myself and my riding ability that I actually had to take a break from riding. I've also ridden in the UAE and I met a trainer at the same stables that I was training at (not my trainer) that was so awful to his horses and his riders :(. He would actually hit his horses 😡. I had to stop riding there because I couldn't stand how the stables would still allow him to train there when he was treating his horses that disgustingly. Anyways, horses are so incredible and they, along with every other animal, deserve to be treated with kindness and respect 😌.

@@charlottegreen9581 anyone who thinks that hitting an animal is good training, should be banned from being around them. Violence from the human only scares the animal and that fear can turn into Agression.. My cousin's trainer once told me that in her experience horses respond better to women than men because women are more gentle. I think that there must be an idea amongst certain trainers that men should be dominating and thus be more aggressive and "alpha" with the horse, and that eventually creates this "preference" for women.

Both Matt and Ariel have a lot on their plate, and also they may not wish to jump anymore-it’s a personal choice as riders mature. And funny enough, after almost 20 years of trying and mostly failing to get her to stop on a dime the English way, I finally learned how after taking some Western lessons. I really found a lot of value in cross-training, as it were, and a lot of things applied both ways and what I knew or learned from one really improved the other. And it turns out my twerp preferred a kind of hybrid between the two, English turning and Western stopping.

You can tell this unlocked core memories for Matt and Ariel. They were in their element! Maggie and Becky also did well for beginners and I love how open-minded they were about this experience.

Barbaras style of teaching is so wonderful to watch. As a cross-disciplinary horse professional it is so wonderful to see someone really take the time to emphasis all the basics so well, from grooming the horse before and after riding to ensuring space in the gullet for the withers. I am so glad to see leaders in the industry instructing such good foundations!

So happy to see a good representation of what horseback riding videos should be! So many times do I see irresponsible videos posted on nose-to-butt trail rides or where inexperienced people rent horses. THIS is how it should be! Where the horses are treated well and are taught to be respected.

Ariel and Matt are the best at everything. I love them together and I love that we got to see their horseback riding skill! They’re so supportive of each other whereas Eugene and Ned are so competitive. We need a vid of all 4 of them together being the best at everything! Also the impromptu photoshoot with Ned taking the pics is so cute !!!

I NEVER KNEW THAT ARIEL AND MATT WERE HORSE PEOPLE LIKE ME: I for clarification think this is amazing, I also competed and am an English rider, not as good as Matt, but I used to be on a track similar, I still love horses and riding, even more so when my summer job is in the stables! And this made me so happy and proud of my one sport! :)))))

I recently went on an all day horseback ride with my Dad and a few friends. It was my second time riding a horse and it was not only really fun, but boy did my body ache later on 😣the horse I had trotted so much I thought my butt was going to become a pancake 🥞 We were also riding in the mountains, so lots of ups and downs as well. I think next time I would want to ride on smoother terrain. It was great regardless 🐴

This is how you should teach someone horseriding. Doesn't matter if it's a onetime thing and "just" for a video. You still should learn the essentials, the respect for a horse, the responsibility you have for another living creature. It shouldn't be about getting the coolest shots, biggest stunts or fastest pace, which you often see in other youtube videos. I think it was a really great video, because you could really learn something from it, and you could see that they could really learn something from it. It doesn't have to be "spectacular". Just some nice people, respecting the animals and really wanting to learn, not just for show-reasons. Well done!
