3:17 The distorted sound is likely a result of an inexpensive circuit in the theremin that uses a low-cost relaxation oscillator instead of a more-expensive resonant oscillator. (The amplifier isn't so much the culprit.) Relaxation oscillators have poor selectivity, and are therefore more prone to interference. You can hear the influence of the power mains in the loudspeaker, especially near the "zero beat" (lowest pitch) when such interference is most detectable. Try a 206E theremin for much better results.

A normal theremin is pretty hard to tune even moving a bottle off the table can affect the tuning. Needless to say I think the theremin is a hands free experience

I'm not familiar with keyboard volume pedals. But I'm sure a guitar pedal would work. They do make volume pedals for guitars too... it would be cool to try some echo loops and wah wah pedals on a theramin.
