Things you hear in restaurants you wish were made up Thank you for the tips, I just got into the world of straight razors, trying to hone the blade and about to shave with it for the first time. My skin is very sensitive as well, I expect a disaster but will probably stick with it to see how painful the learning curve is. Must be very satisfying to finally find a setup that could work for me. I wish you the best, just found your youtube videos and they are awesome.

This is actually a "shavette " straight razors dont have removable blades. Not taking anything away from your shave . These ate actually much sharper to due to the thinner blade
@JimIBobIJones3 жыл бұрын
A properly hollow or extra hollow razor will also be much more flexible, which makes it a lot smoother than the shavette. Shavettes, despite having insanely thin and sharp blades, are wedged or held into place so have pretty much zero flex - a very dangerous combo for tearing up the skin.

Which do you think is more dangerous, a straight or a shavette. I personally think a shavette is more dangerous because it’s so much sharper and thinner and the corners are much pointier
@Owwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww3 жыл бұрын
@@yaboi4582 shavette for the exact reasons you said. The blade is so thin and can literally fold into your skin for a nasty cut. Straights are really only dangerous if you dint sanitize. Even your own. Fun fact, even though they have the nickname cut throat blade nobody has ever been confirmed to have died from and accidentally throat slitting. The shaving angle literally kind of makes deep neck wounds almost impossible. But scores have died from infections from older times from an unclean blade.

I highly recommend getting slicker lather. Your lather started to dry and that is where the razor will catch and gash you. I commend you for your efforts. I suggest go with the grain only for all passes. I have sensitive skin and can’t tolerate ATG.

Dude, you are my hero. I have been watching a lot of videos about shaving with straight blade, but the guys who do it probably have been doing it since birth, so they can shave with their eyes closed and in complete darkness...good to se you have survived the ordeal. this gives me courage to try myself.

Good to see a real beginner's take on a shavette, I tried yesterday for my first time... it wasn't better than yours, I can tell you. But on the other hand, seeing guys do in it so effortlessly gives me courage to keep trying and get better at it. Thanks for your video!
@marcozg7711 ай бұрын
Thanks for this honest video, I think it's actually rare to see someone shave first time with a traditional tool, who only knew cartridges. My personal advice would be to start with safety razors (what you use here is NOT a safety razor and isn't a straight razor either; it is called a shavette...). They have a learning curve as well but they're "manageable". I'm into safety razors for almost 2 years now, and it took me a while to get the hang of it. I had to find the right razor, the right blade etc. But it was worth it. Learning about your personal facial hair growth, is way easier with a safety razor, and this knowledge holds true if you transition to a real straight. I also would advice to try differen shaving creams and soaps. It makes a huge difference and is a lot of fun. For me personally, big part of the joy of shaving is the lathering part.

Absolutely butchered your face! I now it's a little late and Im Sure your technique has greatly improved since this video was uploaded but here are a few pointers: much more lather needed, go only with the grain and use the slightest of pressure. It also doesn't hurt to practice a shave with no blade in the shavette till you build some muscle memory in your hands and it starts to come together.

Not going to blame you for this one, everyone's a rookie at some point. But some advice for viewers: Practice the shavette without a blade inside. Practice holding it, practice it against your face, look at it in the mirror, get comfortable with it. Hold it an hour a day if needed. The more comfortable it feels in the hand, the better. If you're new to a shavette or straight razor, watch a LOT of videos on KZbin of people who KNOW what they're doing first (I highly recommend the Razor Emporium channel). Make sure your face is always REALLY wet, and use a LOT of lather, which should almost be like well whipped cream in texture: thick and "fluffy" (don't be afraid to apply more water or lather at any point). Always fold the handle until it's pointing straight upwards, that'll balance the shavette out. Grip it in a way you feel comfortable, with two or three fingers. Very carefully hold the blade flat up against your face and then angle it SLIGHTLY. Never point it outward a lot, that's how you cut yourself. Stretch the skin (and pucker/point your lips away as needed). Very carefully and gently slide in small strokes. Depending on your blade this may prove a little different (sharper blades will glide, less sharp blades may take a few strokes in one place). Don't rush it. If your first shave takes two hours, let it take two hours. Do NOT go against the grain (always downwards), especially when you're new to it. Stop when you feel like stopping, don't force it. And perhaps most of all: don't do it when you're stressed, tired, sick or otherwise distracted. And ALWAYS be mindful of the shavette or razor. It's when you RELAX your hand between strokes that you tend to cut yourself. Carefully repeat shaves slowly and methodically and in time you will learn. People think of it as a cooler, manlier way to shave, but it's really more like learning to tame a wild horse. You disrespect it, lose your patience, it'll kick you. Nicks and cuts will ALWAYS be part of it, but not like this video. This could've been avoided.

The first time is always hard. But a little advice from someone who not only straight razor shave and de shaves but also uses them to shave my head. You need to do a little more research like another commenter said. I recommend going much much slower with your strokes. Also as well as said before, you need a better lather i.e better soap, shave brush, preshave cream. Another tip would be to map your hair growth so you know which ways to go with the grain. My main suggestion like I said was your speed and they way the blade is held. Obviously it's your first time and I'm not faulting you for that believe me I did the exact same lol but I'd watch a ton of straight razor shaving videos and practice the way they hold there blades and the angle and how slow they go. But regardless of all that good job on your first time and welcome to the manly way to shave lol. Once you get the hang of a straight razor and de saftey razor, you'll never go back to a cartridge razor. Also there better for sensitive skin especially once you get it down with a shaving routine that works for your face and skin

@zeddediah1997 Жыл бұрын
That was hilarious! Looked like you were shopping onions on your face. Ditto all the comments on cremo.To use that shaving creme you HAVE to use a brush, preferably a badger knot, apply about 1/74th the amount in small bands on your face, dip the tips of the brush in hot water and lather it in your face. After about 1 minute you'll have a super thick creamy lather. THEN you are ready to begin the shave. Big hint, never touch the blade. Besides having a good chance of gashing your appendage, it will instantly dull the blade. Good luck!
@smievil2 жыл бұрын
i think the blade you get with some safety razors tend to suck, people tend to recommend buying a few different ones to try. i sometimes have issues with soap starting to dehydrate and starts to add friction when shaving. i've seen people mention that straight razors tend to feel better than shavettes, never tried a shavette, but it feels a bit inconvenient trying to get ahold of some of the sharpening/stropping stuff.
@smievil2 жыл бұрын
i found it really easy to clean of the straight razor in the middle of shaving which was nice, think the gunk buildup is an issue. some straight razors tend to be longer, feels like there's a risk of shaving of the wrong things when doing the mustache and some other parts, maybe one gets used to that though. the shorter length could be convenient though.

It’s more so the shaving cream that’s being used that’s the issue, I used that same one and literally having damp-wet skin then applying that shaving cream one pass of a safety razor or cartridge razor my skin was dry with zero slippery or slickness to it, now combine that with using a straight razor for the first time and you’ll have this experience
@petersullivan22073 жыл бұрын

First off don’t use that Cremo it dries your skin and makes it more hard to shave so get yourself a shaving brush and shaving soap like Stirling Barbershop shaving soap, a good thick lather is always best unlike that Cremo which isn’t thick enough. Second a nice hot shower is best to hydrate your skin or use hot water as a pre shaving before you lather up. Practice is key to any good shave so don’t give up you’ll improve with time and your shaves will get better.

It's all about holding the razor correctly, stretching your skin, holding it at the right angle and GOING SLOW especially if it's your first time 👍😂💈

Currently looking for a straight razor, last longer & less coarse to the skin(easier on the skin than changeable cut throat razor blades) & can learn a new skill(sharpening a blade & using it on the skin instead of modern day t-shaped razors. But, surprised how expensive traditional straight razors are, just looks like a knife to me shaped differently for shaving. Shavettes & cut throat straight razor are a lot cheaper like is this video but, coarse on the skin.(Irritation & bleeding maybe)
