First went clip less from toe cages in ‘97 with Ritchie Logic pedals, loved them and still run them on the trainer. About 5 years ago switched to Egg Beaters. Heading to Moab tomorrow and will be riding flats for the first time at the encouragement of my son, who may switch to my egg beaters for racing in the fall.

I've been riding clipless pedals for 30 years now after riding flats for BMX, and then toe clips. Recently, I decided to try flats on my mountain bike to see if there was a higher level of comfort and control. I hated them, as it was a significant downgrade with climbing, handling, and sprinting. I've never had any issues with getting out of clipless pedals in the case of a crash, taking a high-speed turn, or when coming to a stop. If you have issues with getting out of clipless pedals, then chances are that you have them set up wrong; either the tension on the pedals is too tight or you may need to carve away some rubber away where the pedal engages to the shoe as this could be where you might feel a hangup. The bottom line is ride flats if that is where your comfort level is. However, if you want to improve your climbing and sprinting (both of which make the trails flow easier), then go clipless; just be prepared for a short learning curve at the beginning, and soon they become second nature and confidence-inspiring.

I ride both! Started out riding xc, so naturally I learned to Mtb being clipped in. A few years later I picked up flat pedals as I got into free ride. That transition was terrifying, but I earned a lot from the switch. Now I can ride either. Preference is clipped for trail riding. Flats for doing high consequence stuff or high chance of need to ditch the bike. Clipless for virtually everything else.

Clips for me. Really liked the design of the Mallets. Bought a piar but had to many problems un-clipping due to the pins hanging up in the treads of my shoes and the extra rotation beyond float to un-clip. This extra rotation all so hurt my knees. Have tried two different shoes and tread patterns (no CrankBrother Mallet shoes) and still had problems. After several months I changed to Shimano XT platforms and shimmed the cleat using the CrankBrothers process. Happy knees and less ah crap due to hangups on the pedals. I have learned since I either need to cut grooves to allow the pins to rotate through the tread or consider the pins wearing their own groove as part of a very extended break in period for shoes. For reference I have been MTB with Strap less toe clips , strapped toe clips and SPD for 30+ years and road biking clip and clip-in for 35 years.

clipless for everything (trail, park, Enduro racing, etc…) since the early 90s. With experience, you can get in and out of them just as fast as you can get off and on flats, and you can still drop your heel just like you do with flats, you just don’t have to worry about your feet bouncing around. but many of my friends ride flats and they swear by them. it really comes down to trying them both and riding what works best for you.

I’ve ridden both. I definitely think everyone should start on flats. They help develop your technique. Clipless are great for flowy and down hill trails that aren’t too gnarly. I’m back on flats because my main trail is chunky tech and it’s difficult to try to climb from a stopped position and try to clip in
@peterduncan9277

Good to know both. I like flats for 1) learning bike skills (manualing, bunny hop, anything you need to bail out on) 2) more grounded feel to pedal especially for turns where you can use body english and not have to worry about keeping your foot on the pedal in the range of the clipless float 3) easier to put a foot down 4) nice to be able to wear flat shoes after riding and not change into non-riding shoes. I do not like flats because 1) pins can rip shins and calves when putting foot down 2) if you are sensitive to consistent foot placement, can be annoying to have to keep micro adjusting to get foot back to where you want it 3) not as efficient for climbing 4) Easier for foot to come off pedal when you hit square rocks in tech climbing. I like clips 1) will not rip shins and calves 2) foot is always in same place 3) Have that extra up pull when you need it 4) stay on pedals during techy sections both up and down. Don't like clips 1) training skills 2) hard to get back in (sometimes) in steep sections 3) as good as people say they are, you can still get "stuck" if you crash unexpectedly which can lead to a bigger injury than if you can just put a foot down. I know you guys say you don't like Shimano, but the multi-release SPD cleats (the silver ones) are the shit. Very easy to unclip even at a slight angle vs. having to go sideways. The black ones force you to unclip sideways, which is tough if you are in the process of falling.

Hustle Bike Labs for da win (dual magnets on a swivel within a flat pedal). Waiting patiently for them to arrive as they solve all my issues with both clipless and flats. Love clipless going uphill and clean single track, love flat pedals in technical trails with endless rock gardens and crossing skinnies over water. Don't miss falling onto my hip in clipless coz I couldn't clip out in time and don't miss adding scars to my shins from pedal strikes 😁🤣😝

So far I've still not gotten comfortable on clips. I do appreciate feeling locked in on high speed chattery sections that bounce you around hard, but on wet and slippery rocks and roots in the PNW where I sometimes need to get a foot down instantly, I just am not quick enough in clips and they cause wrecks. With more practice I am sure I'd get it figured out, but with awesome flat's like my Tenet Occults and some sticky Five 10's or Ride Concept Helion Elites, I have not had a foot accidentally bounce off the pedals in at least a year.

I run both as well. For long XC or gravel rides, I use clipless, but for techy, rooty, rocky rides where a quick eject is beneficial, I go with flats. The challenge is climbing a steep rooty section and getting hung up on a root or rock and try to unclip, panic and then fall over.

I run both, depending on my mood. I started out on BMX 40+ years ago so flats are instinctual, but I've run clipless for over 30 years. My jumping is generally better with flats, so I usually run flats at bike parks. For trail riding and racing, usually clipless. On the road, always clipless - although I also started out with toe clips (along with the cleats that slotted onto the rear part of the pedal - those were really brutal to get out of).

I still ride toe clips every now and then on a 85 road bike. There's good and bad with flats and clipless but I've been injured on clipless where if I'd been on flats I think I could have bailed better. One thing to think about is if you ride clipless long enough you might not be able to jump with flats anymore, that's the only reason I don't switch back to flats but I've been clipless for seven years. Every time I put on flat pedals I come home with blood soaked socks from shin strikes, so if you switch it may be hard to switch back. I know if I could do it over again I would've never go clipless but at the time it was the thing to do because everyone else was doing it. Love y'all

been clipless (or clip-in as the crankbros call it) for 30 years. Like the one dude said, more stability/security downhill, more power-transfer on uphills. The only times I run flats (or, I have one set of pedals that are clips on one side, flat on the other) is for trials-type riding or features. Under speed, & normal riding, clipping in is WAY better (once you get used to it). good vid, guys

I used to ride exclusively clipped in, but in 2020 I did a skills clinic for which the coach recommended that we ride flats. His reasoning, which makes total sense, is that riding flats requires the rider to use more correct techniques, where clips allow a rider to "cheat" a little bit. He also said that by riding and progressing on flats, a rider will become even more efficient and proficient when clipped in. There was definitely a learning curve and some blood was shed on the back of my legs, but I now ride mountain bike almost exclusively on flats, but do clip in for XC races, gravel and road riding..
@wumbobo
@wumbobo Жыл бұрын
I think this little “cheat” thing is only true when you first start doing jumps, etc. If you’ve ever tried to just pull up on your clips, you’ll notice that you don’t actually get that high or that much movement. Once you start hitting bigger jumps, you’re kind of forced to learn the correct technique. But then again, when people switch to clips, they’ve usually learned how to do that by then…

No clips on my MTB. I ride way too aggressive and need to be able to bail in a second without thinking about it. I know people will say pro's use clips, and some do, but Im not a pro either. lol On my TT bike I use clips.

Clipless pedals are a little scary at first but you get used to them and not think about them after awhile. I climb way better with clipless pedals and they make me feel one with the bike. I have fallen a few times from not unclipping fast enough but I still wouldn't go back to flats.

Broke my collarbone after not being able to get out of spds. Broke it again the next year on flats. Would have been worse the second time clipped in, flats all the way

I ran Time ATACs for a dozen years; then an injury forced me to change the whole way I was riding, and I found myself on flats. That was 7 years ago, I'm still on flats (with pins), and riding the same forced way (3 joint replacements in 2 years). I still have my Times, and a set of Shimano shoes set up and ready to go IF I recover that much. I miss clipless, because the riding experience was SYMBIOTIC -- it was like the bike was talking to me! I miss that.

80's BMX was all about the flats. As an adult riding for fitness and racing (road, track, marathon XC mtb, Cyclocross, and a return to BMX) all about clipped in. Whole myth about being stuck to the bike or not being able to get out comes from dated and/or poorly adjusted equipment. Also teaching SPIN for over 15 years, 0 students have gone back to flats after getting the hang of maxing out efficiency with clipless That being said, if it takes flats to get someone out riding then go for it.

Flats for me and for some reason clipless people are my enemy, like i ride 27.5 and I'm angry at 26 and 29ers. Until I try those other things and switch sides.

clip-in are all good until you get that thud where your feet trained for years unclipping just wouldn't move correctly and you smash the ground.

Clips…and I agree the term ‘clipless’ is over. Death clips are dead and a thing of the past. I ride flats in snow, but clips for most other riding…and they have ruined me for jumping! I agree with if you are learning, especially if your gonna be a jumper, go with flats to learn proper technique…then switch to clips later for other reasons.

Clipless are good and have benefits for cadence and climbing. I rode them for 20 years. I switched to flats 3 years ago and never looked back. So much more ability for me through the knar, big stuff and sketchy stuff. When clipped in, crashes can get ugly at high speeds. You also risk knee and foot injury.

Hmm - you guys clearly new that trail very well and had masses of confidence that you could make it through the rock gardens without coming off - hence why no knee pads, elbow pads or even gloves. So I don't think you were that nervous really.
