As an ex Krispy Kreme worker, Donut holes are actually the leftover dough we use (scrap pieces, if you will) and it is a way to combat waste because a lot of the product we use to make the dough and snacks are limited in quantity for each store so back then, they would use the dough to make bite sized pieces for themselves and then they started selling them and donut holes became a popular snack. Same with cake pops, it's just leftover cake pieces that are used and molded, dipped and decorated.

Also the reason they’re called donut holes is because of the origin of donuts. They used to just be bread but they’d always be cold in the middle, so they started cutting it out. Eventually they realized to just make it differently tho
