Runebergin torttu is my favorite pastry. Many cafeterias bake their own. Even in stores it's taste can vary widely, and price from 2,5-5+ euros per 2 pieces. Every year I forget to take notes which one were good again, and have to buy a box of each bakery brand. It makes for a perfect splurge breakfast. Serve chilled but not too cold. (Not all of them are good, just like mämmi, the taste varies wildly on the recipe/producer).

I really want to try these, not only because of the deliciousness, but also because of the fact that JL Runeberg was a direct ancestor. which makes me wonder, who was more famous, his wife for these tarts? Is it marzipan flavor? Lucky you can get these. I found a recipe but I am not a good baker. Enjoy! 💖

Depends on the baker. Some put it just on top and some put it also inside the cake. There is also different methods in moistening the cake for example using liqueur based on arrack or almond, rum, plain apple juice or sugar water.

I just bought one pack today and the taste was different than usual. Turns out I bought the vegan ones and they were expensive too.. like 5€

@@KatChats. They were fine, but definitely lacking when I'm used to the traditional ones. Going to look for some leftover ones on sale later this week if I find some, so my "the most random tradition of the year" day isn't ruined XD I mean seriously I've lived here 24 years (my whole life) and I still have no idea who Runeberg even is, I google it every year and then forget it only to google it again the next year

A Runeberg tart MUST have been dipped in arrack/punsch, otherwise it is worthless. I live in Sweden now and would almost kill for a few of them...
