Wow! That pork looked delicious!! Have you found the language barrier to be a difficult part of your travels in Asia? Or do they have English available for tourists? Thanks for sharing your lives with us! So amazing! -Dani
@Theendlessadventure5 жыл бұрын
@@danispenelli5470 IT was pretty tasty 👌😄 Language barrier depends on where you are. Big cities are more likely to have English, but it varies by country. Luckily a lot of places have pictures which helps. We also try to learn the words for the foods we like if we're spending a lot of time in a place 👍

There are 2 different types of egg tarts - the one you had is the traditional egg tart. The ones with crispy creme brulee tops (brown bits) on it are the Portugese egg tart where you can find in Macau. You can just take a ferry from Hong Kong for a day trip to Macau to try the original and famous Portugese egg tart at Lord Stow's Bakery. Also while at Hong Kong, go on day trips to the islands. I love Tai O village to try the street food there.

Ex-Hong Konger here, just catching up on your old videos. About the macaroni soup, it is usually served in a light broth (I believe it is chicken broth), but some are better than others. Traditional toppings include ham, Spam, sausage, and fried eggs. Whenever I order this dish, I'd go for fried eggs, sausage and ham - the runny yolk from the sunnyside-up eggs tend to add a bit more flavour. (As an aside, I'm not sure what kind of sausage it is - it tastes a bit like a Frankfurter, and a bit like a hot dog sausage, but I haven't been able to get it anywhere outside Hong Kong) As for the "service" you received at Kam's Roast Goose - that's pretty standard, I'm afraid. If they're a busy restaurant with lots of customers coming and going, that usually means that they're confident in their ability to produce good food, and that they wouldn't normally focus too much on making sure everybody feels at home. They'll serve you your meal of delicious roast meats and nothing more.

As a local, the reason why we have the clear soup macaroni with slice ham because we usually balance the taste with the stronger taste of sandwiches with scramble eggs or pineapple bun or Hong Kong style deep pan fried toast with peanuts butters and maple syrups. But thank you for introducing the real Hong Kong food. It is so interesting to see foreigners' reaction for having our daily food. The Silk Stocking Milk Tea is also one of my favorites as well, it is made by Sir-Lanka Black Tea with Black & White evaporated milk to make it smooth and rich.

Your reaction to the macaroni soup had me in tears. I’ve taken some non HK friends to HK cafes before and they’re always bewildered by the menu. Next time you should try the instant noodles with satay beef in a set with egg, toast and milk tea!

After my trip there last year, I would say the highlights are: the goose, dimsum, mummy pancake, congee as a start. I also had a egg custard toast similar to that but too sweet. Seafood and I also tried the sushi in a 7 11. I liked the prawns with scrambled eggs.

Those geese take a full day to prepare, it’s never cooked on the spot. Due to the time constraints they are prepared the night before and roasted slowly in vertical special ovens in the morning and hung on hooks to relax and let some of the fat drip off before being served in the afternoon and evening. There are limited amounts that can be made each day. And it’s the type of dish that no one can prepare at their own house, that’s why it’s more expensive than other dishes that can be whipped up on the spot. Because they are cooked earlier in the day, they need to warm them up before serving. The microwave merely liquifies the fat make the meat juicier before cooking. There is no need for downgrading because the microwave is used specifically for this one function.

I feel like you got the short end of the stick with the Pineapple Bun with Butter - if you get it with butter, the pineapple bun is suppose to be hot out the oven so the butter would melt quickly. Anyway, glad you tried all the local stuff that I grew up around!

Thing is, they used condensed milk for their teas, same as Thailand because I think it was too costly to try and keep normal milk cold, so they just opted to used condensed canned milk instead - seems to work for them :D

Pineapple bun with butter is my all time favourite thing to eat in Hong Kong. Satay Beef noodles is another great dish to have, you'll usually see it on the breakfast menu. Hong Kong food is amazing because it's influenced by so many cuisines, especially the English and other provinces of China. Definitely hit the streets of Mong Kong and have street food like offal, it's much loved by locals.

The macaroni and ham soup is normal and is very common amongst HK people, the french toast should always be the first thing to be eaten since it loses its temperature quickest, and once the butter is melted and turns into a pool, it won’t be as nice.

The macaroni soup ham is for tourists, non asians. You wouldn’t see locals eating that. The egg tart (don tot) is a must and the pineapple bun (bore lore boa) is sweet custard bun, eat without the butter please though.
@americanmade69965 жыл бұрын
Everything you ate at breakfast was an adaptation of some Western dish. The custard tart is Portuguese, macaroni is of course Italian. Even the pineapple bun is Westernized with a slab of butter. As for the goose and cha siu, I hope you shared. Chinese entrees are intended to be eaten family style, and at a Chinese table it is impolite to hog one entire dish for yourself (it's also wasted opportunity). The goose skin would have been crispier if it weren't microwaved. The microwave oven does suggest that this place earned a Michelin star but has been resting on its laurels.

Microwave for heating and microwave for cooking are two different things. You just have to not cross the thin line between them. That meat looked to have lots of liquid content so heating that way is pretty safe. I'm sure they have the timing down to a tee. Looked great and I'm sure you were both pretty full after that. I hope you picked a good Dim-Sum place, one where the locals eat and not a "fancy" one. One of these maybe. kzbin.info/www/bejne/il69ZH1-pZiKrLc

In general Chinese eat roasted meat at room temperature. They know that Europeans and Americans like it hot, that's why there is a microwave ready to heat up the meat. They don't do that for Asian customers. And Asians like fatty meat and cartilage.

Greeting from Hong Kong, please accept my apology as a Hongkonger for your bad experience, as Hong Kong is not a very tourist friendly place on earth. (they don't have time to waste on customer service. So, sit down, finish your meal and get out of here!!!) We, as a local, also get this kind of treatment, only we get use to it. So don't take it personal and enjoy your stay in Hong Kong.
