It's also why he tries so hard to mess himself up with drugs and alcohol and letting people drug him... he wants to ruin himself so badly that Val will let him go. Angel knows full well what is happening.

If he won, Alastor would pay off all his depts and he would keep his power as an overlord. If he lost, which he did, Alastor would get his eternal soul and hold all his creditors at bay with his reputation.

Ah, the episode that breaks people. No, Val can't hurt Charlie in any way. She would utterly destroy him if she wanted to. The point is Angel is afraid for her... which should tell you about how Valentino has treated him. It also shows just how much he cares about her... begging Val to not hurt her. And Angel fighting with all he has to not break down in tears having to be mean to Charlie and kick her out. You can hear his voice failing him. It's heart breaking.

No, he wasn't faking looking rough the next morning. Val told him they were going to shoot all night long, without stop. ROUGH, HARD stuff. Non consensual since Val literally owns his soul and can force him to do whatever he wants. Val also raped Angel multiple times throughout the night if you watch. Drugs, all over. It is a deeply disturbing and messed up night set over one of the best songs in the entire show. And he is rough the next morning. But see just how fast he puts that mask back on? That's the name of the episode. Masquerade. Angel is masquerading the whole time. You see it crack during the song multiple times but he puts it back on instantly. Imagine what he has to do mentally to function even minimally every day. And as painful as Poison is, it's the talk between Husk and Angel outside of the bar that really drives it home. Angel is completely self destructing, trying so hard to completely wreck himself. The tears in his eyes as he screams about how painful it all is, and then the quiet voice at the end, "maybe he won't want me as his favorite toy anymore." GOD the VA for Angel is phenomenally good.

This is a fun, yet unnerving fact. You notice when Valentino spits up red gunk from his mouth occasionally or when he smokes the cigarette has regular smoke while when Val exhales it’s red. That’s because like real world moths and other such insects they secrete pheromones. When he licked Charlie, he tried to turn her into one of his sex workers, I don’t know what the term is for it but because she’s half human, half angel, and part demon she was immune to his advances and to his pheromones. That’s how Valentino has so many underlings in the adult film industry, how he got Angel to sell his soul to him, and why he became an Overlord of Hell. He knows how to manipulate others with his tantalizing saliva, which is not only disgusting but it’s genuinely terrifying. That’s the “poison” that Angel was referring to. Val saying this in Episode 2 supports this fact as well… “Just put something inside them, that’s how I get the bitches to behave.” Furthermore that Loan Shark who tried to spike Angel’s drink had a love potion, that love potion was actually made by Velvette, another one of the Vees by using Valentino’s saliva. Yeah I think it’s safe to say that not only is he the one of the most cruel and evil Overlords and sinners in Hell, but he might very well be the most dangerous of the Vees, even more so than Vox. Much lighter-hearted fact, Val actually squeaks when he moves sometimes like how real Moths do. If you go back to the previous episodes and listen closely you can hear squeaking in any scene he’s in.

It definitely is a trigger warning that affects people differently. All the SA and physical Abuse in the song, especially if you pause it a lot, has huge impacts on people. The music is amazing though. This was a huge turning point for Angel, to trauma bond and not be alone. The hotel is working! Now Episode 5 is quite possibly my favorite of all, though I love the whole series. Those with Daddy issues get it lol. Hope its released next week but I get it if it gets delayed. Amazon/A24 did an amazing thing here... they released the lyric video for Poison just a few days before eps 1-4. So everyone was jamming to this banger of a track for days. EATING it up. Absolutely raving over it. And then we all watched episode 4... and suddenly we all felt extremely dirty for liking that song. This episode was fantastic, albeit really dark, but can we take a second to talk about Kyle? He was constantly monitoring Kirby's face and body language, making sure she was okay and doing his best to comfort her as best he could. He was even willing to stop the video, completely aware that he would make less money for it/make fans mad, all to make sure she was comfortable and not get overwhelmed. That's an attentive partner. I don't know what happened to you, Kirby, but I hope things get better for you and I wish you both happiness together in the future.

I may not be a psychologist, even though I'm really good at talking to people about their problems and helping them feel better, but Angel's reactions to Val and Charlie are all things i would assume victems of abuse would try to do: avoid any more abuse even if the person trying to help could fix the problem. Charlie could EASILY beat Val, but Angel is stopping her cause abuse victoms never think they can get out. That's the real sad part about Angel: he thinks no one can help him.. Thankfully, Husk pulls him out of that mindset and, thankfully, gets better. Even if it is a very tiny step forward, but that's what you do.

Watching the two of them react to Husk and Angel revealed a bit more than I think these content creators intended it to. I can't say I haven't been there, though. It's strange how a coping mechanism that's helped you survive for so long can suddenly shift into something deeply unhealthy and dangerous when you see another person doing the same thing. Therapy taught me that having used self-destructive coping mechanisms doesn't mean you're a bad person or to blame. The trauma that led to the self-destructive habits or even the habits themselves don't have to be the exact same as Angel's. I relate to the abusive situation Angel's in even though it's not 1 to 1 and my coping habits weren't the same as his. Regardless, when you're in difficult or dangerous situations even deeply unhealthy coping strategies were valid if they helped you survive long enough to escape. Once you're in a safer environment, however, it's time to learn safer and healthier ones before the things that saved you then destroy you now. It's a hard road to unlearn that stuff but therapy is a godsend and I can't recommend it enough. It honestly does help whether your issues seem minor to you or not.

Reminding Angel that he doesn't need to put on that show for others and just be himself, he'll still have a true friend in Husk who sees him for who he really is and never judges him for his position. There's something in Valentino's spit that makes it red - it also comes out in his cigarette smoke. I think that's what he was talking about when he said "put something inside him, it's how I get the b***es to behave". SO when he licked Charlie's arm and then offered her a job he was trying to......yeah..........it didn't work in Charlie's case because her father is Lucifer, either it's got something to do with his being King of Hell or it has something to do with he fact that he was an angel (and may still be), either way she's protected, others aren't.
