Only old heads know about jewtown up to 1997. This when Goldblatts was on the corner, first down coats, 8 ball jackets, buck50 hats, lugg boots was in. Its called Maxwells now and the prices was wayy cheap. Burgers and fries was $2.50/$3. Hotdogs with fried like $2.20. Now the prices is up

Don't forget the people walking around selling bundles of socks and porn tapes. Sometimes people would have VCR's in boxes or empty boxes. haha. There was a lot of stolen merch sold around there. Hard to beat the prices on gym shoes and Starter jackets though.

The prices you’re giving are high & I’ve been eating Jew town since I was a young kid back in the early 1970’s. I can’t remember when the polish stands was a lil shack in the middle of the street on Halsted. Polishes were like .40 cents

I remember going to Jewtown at night when they were on Halsted and see bus drivers stop the bus get off and get a polish that’s how good they are. You are so right you can smell the onions and you have to get off the express and get a couple of polishes. Grape pop yessss.

People don't remember the real polish stands on Halsted. But I never understood why there are 2 polish stands that served the food on their menu but one was a few cents more.

@@ladycharliestallworth2280 Oh yeah! I forgot about that. Wasn't their 3 polish stands? There was a really raggedy stand across the street the nobody went to unless they didn't want to wait. I use to skip school to go down there to shop with $300 and come home with tons of clothes.

The good old days in the '90s rest in peace to my father. We used to ride around Chicago and then he'll go to his bowling alley, match his tournament and then we'll go hit up. Jewtown Church's Harold '90s was different man. I miss it 🫡🫡🫡💯💯💯

Bro let me help you. You too young to speak on this. Back in the 50's and 60's It was called Jew Town for the obvious reason . That whole area was nothing but JewISH Businesses. Back in 67/68 I was in 8th grade and would go get my " Walking Suits" MADE and buy my ZIPPER PLEATED Pants( Moms spoiled her son too much) your right you would Argue and Haggle to JEW the price down. It was such a Vibe back then. On any given day ( weekends) Howlin Wolf , Muddy Waters ect would be on the street Singing. Most of the Vendors had tables all on the street selling everything you could imagine. There were not any Arabs back then. Just Jewish and a small amount of Black Salesmen. It really was a sight to see. ✊🏾

Prior to the 50's Jew town was the place to go for clothes, furniture, shoes and anything else you wanted or needed. My God mother came to Chicago in the 30's and she use to tell me about the 12th Street Store, on the corner of Halsted and Roosevelt. She use to tell me about Hastings Street also. In the early years, you could go down there on Sunday and hear the blues, shop, and eat. The Daleys' destroyed that area to make way for the university. It begin with the daddy and later on, the son finished it off. People use to come from different parts of the country to visit. You are correct, there were no Arabs or Mexicans salespeople. Just Jewish and Black.

What in the world are you talking about family. Its called jew town because the jews use to stay in that community. In the city bros our towns were name for the people who live in them back in the day day like before the racial integrity act. White folks lived in the inner city ghettos thats the true name ghettos was for people other then us. Lolol. Real truth

WRONG. Jews came to that area years ago. They were there in the early 1910's. That came from overseas and different areas in Chicago. There is a documentary on this and also some books. Nabisco bakery got its start there and Oscar Goldberg, use to reside there also.

I refuse to believe that you went your whole life thinking it was called juke Town? Please don't tell me that you think they call it jew Town because they had a lot of urban clothing stores and a bunch of hustlers? That doesn't even sound right. "Jews the first economically secure class willing to help them was the mostly Jewish merchants of the area around Maxwell Street" That's why they call it jew town cause it was literally a jew neighborhood.

"JewTown" doesn't really exist anymore. It used to be a retail spot for cheaper goods and because of the stereotypes it was named... town. It's mostly changed. More middle eastern than in the past. If your money was tight you went to ...town or 63rd and Halsted in the 60's thru the 80's. I don't know what's there now except for the Maxwell street polish.
