Thanks for sharing this video! As a start-up farmer myself, I appreciate seeing your real world struggles so I can learn. Also appreciate the constructive advice in the comments - ignore the haters. Progress over perfection. I’m now watching your follow up videos. Aloha!

Have same one. Only thing I don't like is that it only squeezes from one side.

I have the S0191 chute, the trick with the auto catch is to be sure all the joints and slides are lubed up, so everything works easily. I have plywood (you could use dark colored tarps) on the sides of my alleyway and a sliding gate to hold two animals at the ready. I setup a corral with a section about 1/3 smaller as a sort pen -- then off of that a "squeeze pen" to get the cattle ready to enter the alleyway. My corral is made of cattle panels, but the last pen (squeeze pen) is made of corral panels with plywood on the side the operator is on. The other side has posts set so that I can move the side of the pen in 3 different locations easily. The pen is short enough that the movable corral panel wedges between the posts and can be moved forward one end at a time, if the cattle push on it, the panel just wedges again. I would like to have a better setup on this Farm, but we work with what we have -- much better still than what I started with.

That sounds very similar to how I am set up now. Hope you will check out my other video of us working the herd, and give me your feedback. I like the idea of the plywood or dark colored tarps on the alleyway. I think I am going to add that to my current setup. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWS9Y5uZl7Gcg6c

I would get some regular pipe gates. Ive got dexter cattle now, have had TX longhorns in the past and have found good pens and setup are good for us and the cattle. Those wire panels are going to lead to some one - you or cattle getting hurt. the pipe gates you can climb up out of the way of needed. The cross bars on those wire panels will break when you seriously need them.
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree! If you check out my latest video of us working the cattle, you’ll see I have added several of those pipe gate corral panels like you suggest. But I still have a few wire cattle panels still being used. Eventually l will replace all the wire panels, but those corral panels ain’t cheap. I’ll be buying them as the budget allows. Thanks for checking out my video and taking the time to leave a comment!

Tighten up your alley or if possible buy an adjustable one. A sweep is great help also.
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Agree. As you can see from my crude set up, I still have some work to do for my corral, sorting pen, sweep, etc. Have decided to go with pre-fab panels for this versus trying to building something myself. Hope to be able to purchase that here very soon!

Don’t get discouraged, try putting up plywood on each side of the alley. That way the only light they see is ahead through the chute. I’ve had the so4 for about 12 years or more . On my second one already to be honest. If you can’t put it on a cement slab. Try to put it on cement blocks at least so the bottom can avoid moisture. The automatic closing head gate isn’t reliable so have someone at the chute ready for cattle and someone trying to push them. They sell some black sight covers to put on the part of chuTe that swing down . EiTher use those or try not to let them see you until they have already committed to getting into chute
@WattsWayFarm

Great advice. Thanks for sharing. I think I am going to get some cement blocks. This chute wasn’t cheap! I need it to last a very long time!

That is my ultimate goal too! That is why we invested a bit more in this chute versus the cheaper model or just a head gate set up
@lyndonwhitfield1151
@lyndonwhitfield1151 2 жыл бұрын
I feed mine where they have to go through the chute to get to the feed. Start w/ the side open, when they get used to that I close off the side and open head gate all the way to let them come through. The only catch with this method is they will pile up trying get through.

You guys are doing a great job. You are recognizing where you can improve. One suggestion I would make, get a sharps box so she doesn't need to recap those needles.

Ugh! We have one. I bought one. Surprisingly cheap at the drug store. Only like $2, if I remember correctly. But I FORGOT it! She was so mad. She is a nurse. Not having the sharps container went against her basic instincts! 😬

I just purchased one for my overseas operation. Looks like the head catch was “stiff” did you add wd40?? Based on the calves size did you try reducing the squeeze to the narrowest point, maybe that would help in holding them In place. Btw I’m asking because I have never used one before. Thanks in advance for any input you can share.
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 3 жыл бұрын
I have gotten better at using this. The WD-40 helps a lot. The manual actually states applying before every use. Also agree on reducing the squeeze to narrowest for the smaller calves. I run Dexters which are a small breed anyway so definitely have to reduce the squeeze. It is surprising just how far you have to reduce it down. Those lboogers are like little Houdini’s with how they can squeeze out of stuff.

I myself are going to work Brahman. I’m curious if the newborns will hold in the chute. How much do your babies weight?? Btw thanks for answering.
@WattsWayFarm
@WattsWayFarm 3 жыл бұрын
My Dexter's are small. I am am pretty sure will work with Brahman's. those are much bigger than my Dexter's. Dexter calves weigh about 45 pounds at birth, and by the time there weaned at 7 months, they may weigh between 350 and 500 pounds.

You don’t have to spend all the money on a sweep if you don’t want to. They are nice and make things easy but make the alley more narrow, add plywood to the sides and you will see a major difference. If you get some rowdier cattle switch the cattle panels to corral panels and put the plywood back in and your still good to go.
@WattsWayFarm

Truth be told, I don't want to spend $$ on a sweep. I think I am going to try your approach first. Thanks for taking the time to to share.

As stated, your alley is way too wide. Before trying to 'force' them into the chute, I trained mine to go thru the chute to get to their water or back out to the pasture from the pen by leaving the chute as the only exit from the feeding pen. Took a little time but they figured it out and now running all of my herd thru the chute for AI, shots, whatever is no big deal. Best of luck to you. Pinch your alleyway down as tight as possible so even the little ones can't turn around.

I was here once. Friendly pet like cows don't act like cows. I still have a couple of old mama cows I can just vaccinate standing there and they are probably 1600 + lbs . I don't know for sure cause they won't go through the chute with the scales. The rest act like cows cause they have been treated like cows and have a natural fear of humans. I started with a couple of cows and now run about 70 head. I know we work with what we have but you have a $6000 chute and $10 worth of fencing/alley way. Just saying. You will get there!

Thanks for the comment. For what it’s worth, I still have a day job. But it’s more like 7 to 7 most days which limits a lot of what I can do day to day. Our farm lifestyle is very new to us as our videos show. But we are getting better every day. I will probably never be as pro at this as I suspect you probably are, but I do know our animals have very happy lives. We love the time we do get to spend pursuing a more simple lifestyle with our kids, and are going to keep doing this and sharing our stories on KZbin so other folks might take the leap like we did and see that this can be figured it. We are so glad we did. Thanks again.
