Jen you have just discovered why I love pastels so much AND why I when I first started I would only use certain brands of colored pencils because I am forever trying to find a pencil that performs like a creamy pastel. Also I love how you have created a business that brings you so much joy. Shine your Light and fill the world with beautiful color

Wow! Thanks for sharing these with us-they’re gorgeous! I, too, have an issue with using my luxe art supplies. But after having a couple of products actually go bad from sitting unused on a shelf, I’m working hard at using my fancy products more regularly. It helps to remember that I’m allowed to feel fancy while I make my art-the art police don’t exist!

Absolutely true, my expensive supplies I almost end up collecting them because I want to make sure I used them properly. I rather play with inexpensive materials so I can be more creative.

When I buy expensive art supplies I keep telling myself that the true waste is in not using the supply because you always have your creations when the supply runs out.

Good perspective. I try to tell myself...Jennifer, if you run out, you just get to go shopping again and buy more! 😂🤪

Yes!!! Thank you! I needed to read that. I suffer from an OCD that cripples me with my use of fancier more expensive mediums.😕I have a museum of wonderful art supplies that I'm terrified of...wasting, ruining them by misuse, that they could be discontinued, product quality might diminish in replacements... 🤯 I will use your advice as a mantra now because I too quickly forget that my joy in the actions is also a gift of tangible memory 🎨👩🏻🎨🖖🏼

💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 I used to hoard all the good stuff, until one day I watched a video by a scrapbooker who told of this precious paper she kept because it was too special to put on just any layout and then one day she was flipping through her papers and discovered her treasured precious and she didn't like it anymore, it was so old now it was out of fashion and didn't suit her now style. I was like OMG, yes!!!!! She also said now every layout is special and if she loves a paper she can see it now in her albums, again I squealed YES!!!!!! So now, I think I bought this to use, and enjoy... and I do! Use up your beautiful pastels and enjoy them in your art, not their box!

And YES your comment about using your products wisely is exactly how I feel. I bought cheap products to practice with until I learned the techniques properly and THEN I pulled the trigger and bought my beautiful expensive art sets. I do not like wasting my Prismas' or my Kuretaki's or my Gelly's or my Zebras. These are precious to me and I use them frugally. I have bought lower-end products like Cezanne, Master's Touch, Sharpies, and other generic products from China to practice.

I have these in my cart RIGHT NOW at Blicks. 🤣🤣🤣 I thought I would die when you said there were MORE colors. Thanks for the video, you’ve removed ALL doubt that I want them. Can you also do a video on what to do with them. 🤣🤣🤣 I’m getting them because I’m doing Wunderlust, it’s a yearlong art journaling class with 28 different and oil pastels was on ONE of the products on ONE supply list for ONE CLASS.

Yes, precious. I like to invest in fewer but higher quality products -- and I really sweat the details . The last thing I want is problems disrupting my bliss! But, the unintentional outcome is they just sit in the drawer, unused, because somehow my mind twists up and I tell myself I need to make a masterpiece bc they are so high-priced! Just have to keep telling myself they want to be used & fulfill their purpose :-D

SHARING SOME ECONOMIC TRICKS AND FUN: First of all, thank you so much to both of you for the video about the iridescent oil pastels Senneliers! But, let me suggest you the use Polychromos black pencil which it seems better than Prismacolor black pencil with wax base due the oil base which it is more compatible with the oil pastels as outliner. Futhermore, let me sharing to you and auditors, that I am using the cheapest oil pastels such as or Cray-Pas for juniors with the shaper blending tools (on 300gsm or 650gsm the manipulation facilities) on 100%cotton such as Arches watercolour cold press which activates just like oil paints, instead the use of stumps blenders (more economic on the long terms. Concerning my first layers with oil pastels on any smooth papers series 300 or 400 or mix-media paper, I used lightly the cheapest ones to build my last layering with Senneliers like Pentel, Cray-Pas, Mungyo for scholars, then Gallery Mungyo for artists or others with Senneliers at last only, in order to manage these pricey ones in term of duration in time. And I had already told you, I use the Polychromos pencils and my Zig watercolour brushes on my oil pastels to draw the fine details of my portraits and not the Farber-Castell ink Pitt pencil due to the shorter brushes which it is not conveniently to be used properly on your oil pastels artwork by doing patches instead fine details needed for a portrait as well as for the hairs or fur! FUTHERMORE concerning the INKTENSE PENCILS (Derwent): After a lot of thinking about the smoothest rendering of my alcohol markers on my piece of artwork, I discovered that I can use Inktense pencils by choosing the nearest tone then using an alcohol blender on it, due to the compatibility of the ink use. In order to obtain a better shading tones, everyone knows that we can use the colours pencils, but the pastel pencils either by choosing a pale tones or darker tones in our colourings with stumps blending as well the white one for the direction of lights too. As I am having a lot of difficulty to open the alcohol markers caps, I use scissors in open position on the cap and flip over to open them! Please excuse me for my bad English writing due to fact the French language is my mother tongue! Have fun with my tricks and good luck to everybody in your artworks in progress!

I always feel this way about art supplies- not wanting to waste them. It is definitely worse when I've made a big investment, but the feeling is still there with cheaper supplies, too. I was recently coloring a background with a Crayola crayon and I caught myself being worried that I was wearing down the crayon too quickly. A Crayola crayon! I think the only way to get past it is to just make yourself use your stuff- it gets better the more I use a particular supply. And I also give myself mental permission that if I totally use it up and love it to the last scrap, I'm allowed to buy another :)

I used to hate oil pastels because cheap ones feel like glorified crayons. I got my hands on Sennelier in my AP art class and fell in love and they are my preferred medium now. I'm only a hobbyist now so it is hard to "justify" the cost other than the joy I feel working with them and the pride in my art those vibrant creamy colours give me. About to invest in a new set of them for the first time in year just because 2020 sucked and I need some of that joy. Thank you for this review, I had never tried the iridescent colours before and I think these will really be fun to work with.
@ColoringBliss3 жыл бұрын
Victoria I am so glad your AP art class gave you that experience. So often the schools use the least expensive tools, giving students such a frustrating experience for their first time trying these tools. And...hobbyist or not, I don’t think you need to “justify “ purchasing quality art supplies. So often we purchase cheap, uninspiring products and then they don’t get used or we don’t find joy as we use them...what was the point?! It’s not a splurge, it’s an investment in creativity.
