After a discussion on the latest episode of The Midlife Pilot Podcast
( • Midlife Pilot Podcast ... , I was inspired to get out in the 172 and see how well I could still do various private pilot check ride maneuvers.
Spoiler alert: not really well.
Come along for part one of a 2-part series where I'll work on slow flight, stalls, turns around a point and steep turns.

This all looks very familiar, as I took my PPL Checkride yesterday at age 71! I checked into the podcast about a month ago. Oral went fine, missed two maneuvers. Foggle time sucked, and also busted my Short Field Landing, touching down short of the 1000' markers. Re-Testing on 2/4. We'll nail it next time!!

Good luck with the retest! My training field only has 1300' of runway so Short Field is the ONLY way to land!

I sent my transponder off to get the touchscreen repaired during the annual in November. It’s coming up on 90 days since I last flew. We just got it back today and my plane will be ready to go on Monday. I plan to do exactly what you are starting with some pattern work then off the the practice area and work on maneuvers. I’ll be filming those as well. Great tools to go back and watch what you were doing. Keep up the great videos. 🛫

Is there a forum of all the midlife pilot subscribers where we can ask questions and have active discussions?

Nice! How do you edit the multiple camera shots so that they are synchronized?

I’m mid-life (and then some!). Ha-ha! Thanks for the great videos. I’m 14.2 hours into my PPL and have done the steep turns, etc. Coming up soon is the rare training of spins (or spin recovery training, to be more specific). Anyway, I have a question for you. What GoPro settings (exposure, etc) did you use on this video? Both your instrument panel and the outside views are both exposed very well. Usually when I use my GoPros, the outside view is either overexposed and washed out or the instrument panel is too dark to see, but the outside view is good. You seem to have struck a good balance.

Hi there. I’m actually using a gradient ND filter on my cockpit GoPro - the top half has ND8 filter, bottom half is clear so it reduces the exposure of the top half of the frame. flightflix.net/product/gradient-cockpit-glass-prop-filter-52/

After watching a channel that you guys recommended on your podcast (Backcountry 182) it's impressive how much this guy practices slow flight in order to make some of his landings. If that guy finds value in practicing these basic maneuvers, seems like a good thing to stay proficient at. What would it take for you to feel confident doing all of these maneuvers in your Cherokee 235?

That’s a great question. I need to get out with a CFI and do them. Great idea for a video perhaps….

@@MidlifePilot I'm working my way through The Killing Zone and I think I understand a bunch of stuff now that I didn't before about why we do certain maneuvers in private training.

Great job, Chris. Glad you're sharing this. We all could use some practice, I'm sure. I get to go get night current next week. Might take off a little early to practice some maneuvers before my "night landings". Great video, as always. See you and Brian next Wednesday.

Great video to showcase that we need to keep proficient on not just patter work, but those checkride maneuvers. BTW, that’s a sweet looking cap! 😉
