For the 1st time ever back I had a customer request hickory chunks, but I told him that all the hickory was already processed how I normally make it and that it would be better/cheaper for him to cut it with a sawzall or something.

The cookies add up fast good to see you have a market for them . We split em all as well and just sell it a 1/3 cord at a time for a discount usually $50 for a 1/3 . We do the same with the pine an get the same $ . I’ve got 10 totes full so I’m burning it to heat my shop just to free up some totes . The 2 smoker guys I have are commercial guys so they want the 16 in wood but I might just try advertising the chunks an see how they do . That splitter made quick work of that pile of cookies.

Man Jeremiah, your tree services really take care of you. I’ve sold cooking wood chunks for a few years now. My advice is keep making them with your scraps. Weeks and sometimes months will go by without a “chunk” sell but then the flood gates open. I sell them by the lb and they FLY out of my woodyard specific times of year, thanksgiving being the number one. I’ve sold so many bags of this stuff in the past week. Everyone’s getting ready to smoke their turkey. Just watch your fingers. It can be a tedious process with those short rounds!

With white oak, Hickory , apple and cherry i save the shortwood. Easy to store in totes and move when its dry and ready to bag up and sell. Bags cost more than bundle plastic but for 20-25 lb smoker chunks at $10 is profitable and worth saving the cutoffs. Boilerwood / campfirewood pile for all the pine shorts and other non smoker wood cutoffs. Ive even kiln dried chunks in ibcs in our kiln . Speeds up drying slightly lol. 4 days vs 6months or longer air drying

Nothing wasted, love it! I rarely get any cherry here in North Carolina. I have found that Cherry needs to be too covered in my area since the bark won’t separate from the wood if left uncovered. Is that what you have found?

Definitely the bark likes to hang on. Most of my cherry gets stack in a shed, but I think if stacked outside there shouldn’t be a problem. Thank you Dave👍👊

Goodmorning Jeremiah. You’re going to end up with a pile of cherry chunks. I was always told you need to remove the bark because of bitterness taste. Maybe that don’t matter with cherry? Jeremiah, I think that was worth the time. At least in my area I can say that "cooking wood" usually brings a lot higher sale-value that regular firewood. Do you plan to sell it in bags? I've got a little stash of Cherry myself and that was my tentative plan for it

It’s value added firewood. It’s worth it, if you can sell it for the right price. With the load of cherry I bought from Wisconsin earlier this fall I plan on offering smaller split 12” cooking wood size. I think a cubic foot bag should be worth $10. What do you think, or what do you do in your market?
@outdoorsinthe60824 күн бұрын
Yes, if it’s all cherry. I get $10 per bag for cooking chunks and $5 per bag for just regular hardwood mix. Thanks Brent👍👊

Your tractor loader box is 4’x4’ correct? How deep is this box? I need to make similar for myself.😊 Like your moving totes with the 3 point. Lots of guys forget about 3point hitch uses. Then go buy a larger tractor or skid steer just to move totes around the wood yard😅

I think it’s right around 16” deep. Using the 3 point isn’t ideal but it definitely works. Thank you!👍👊
