Trying the Bryan Johnson "Anti Aging" Lunch
Bryan Johnson is an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, and author... and now KZbinr ‪@BryanJohnson‬ on a mission to create a blueprint to extend a healthier life through food and nutrition. He's hired a team of scientists, doctors, nutritionists, and chefs along with constantly measuring changes to his own body and now along with others to create the perfect diet that slows down and reverses aging.
This is his lunch that he eats daily. I wanted to try it and give you my thoughts on the taste, how I felt, and my general thoughts.
I am NOT a health food junkie, I am not a nutritionist so I can't give my thoughts there... But could I make the plunge and eat this every day? I don't know.. maybe.

I would love to see you do it for a week, but I think it would get boring if you tried to do it for much longer than that. Something that strikes me about his diet, is that he leaves out so many equally healthy foods. I mean, where is the red cabbage? He strikes me as narcissistic also, wants to be young and beautiful forever but doesn't have time for a relationship because he is trying so hard to stay young and beautiful.

Yes do this!!! Perhaps do a week of this meal slightly modified like with tomato sause. You will get lots of views. Then to do this life extention diet to perfection create a second round of videos basted on Dr. Micheal Gregers latest book : How Not to Age . In his evidence based book he covers the 11 pathways of aging; you would be saying things like " the vinegar and hybiscus tea amp up ampk, one of the Pathways that declines as we age." This is going to be very tricky to handle all this nerd information in an entertaining way; but Dr Greger is able to entertain and teach ,this is why he has so many followers,and you have a similar connection with the people who watch you, so it will be your most difficult challenge but you can do it starting your research while you are copying this millionaires diet on your channel. This will help lead your followers into your master class of How Not to Age Eating

I've been eating this every single day for around ~6 months now. It hits the majority of micronutrients and digests surprisingly easily enough to be able to go the gym right away. @@SauceStache We prep it daily! Veggies are washed and chopped earlier in the day for maximum sulforaphane. Dried black lentils go in the instant pot for 9 mins on high and we'll begin steaming the veg once the natural release process begins so that it all finishes at the same time. Just an inch or two of water in a pot drastically cuts down prep time but it's still around 30 mins total, fortunately most of it passive As we've gotten accustomed to the volume, we typically finish a bowl in 15 mins or so I do know that Bryan sometimes adds dark chocolate chips to this for variety and some users on r/Blueprint_ add nooch

Not sure about boiling everything unless you are making soup. Steaming would keep more nutrients plus be quicker. I would prefer no cruciferous veggies, easy to swap out for other nutritious ones. Just batch an instant pot of lentil soup would be my version. Skip hemp, because I eat tons of seeds for breakfast. And that's way to much cumin for one serving for my taste. Maybe a quarter teaspoon cumin and a teaspoon of tumeric, plus some black pepper. I would add some iodized salt, too. Probably use onions, celery, carrots and at the last minute, some beet greens. [On an aside about Health-Span versus Life-Span ...] Trust me, as I said to commenter below ... You don't want to live to the age of 100+, if you don't have good health and mobility. I just got finished taking care of my Mom (who was 93) for last 6/7 years after she fell in 2017 and was less mobile, and really unable to take care of herself without my wife and my help. So, the age number is not what matters. It's being healthy ... called "Health-Span". Don't worry about the age number; worry about the health span. Thankfully, she had most of her faculties to her last days. Low level of senility, but she did have inability to get around. Again, you don't want excessive age without great health. It's not envyable nor enjoyable -- having seen it first-hand.

@ariesmry
@ariesmry 9 ай бұрын
Exactly. this is what happens when you get overly clinical about aging... you miss out on the joie de vivre. Besides having a great diet and daily, functional movement, many centenarians also have a sense of purpose, a strong community, and a genuine appreciation of their world. There is a simplicity to their life. I have several family members on both sides of my family that lived close to or past 100 and there diet was what it was. Having peak physical health, whatever that means, was not the only factor.

But these vegetables should be organically grown, especially broccoli and cauliflower, because they are often treated with chemicals to make them grow big. The second thing is to focus on healthy, seasonal vegetables and fruits. This requires changing my daily habits so that I don't eat broccoli every day. The list of cruciferous vegetables is longer, so they can be replaced with other vegetables such as kale, kohlrabi or Chinese cabbage. I think it's worth diversifying the menu. One thing that is worth sticking to is things that provide low GI and even more so have a low glycemic load

So glad you made this!!! One thing bothered me about this recipe! Dr. Greger states that’s the sulforafane levels are greatly reduced when cooking cruciferous vegetables and advised sprinkling dry mustard on the cooked veg to restore it. Not sure if any of the compounds added to this recipe did that. And, I followed Bryan’s KZbin short of his recipe that said to add the raw garlic and ginger to the dressing that included the cumin, EVOO and vinegar. I made the recipe as directed in the KZbin short and it was tasty, with the addition of the dry mustard. But lots of effort for a daily lunch, as it’s advised to cut the vegetables at the time of cooking to maintain the antioxidant levels that deplete over time if cut in advance.

Johnson receives lots of rightful ridicule from many others in the "longevity" community, including researchers, as you alluded to. A lot of the things he advocates for are not what gives him his "youthful" (to me it's smooth, but offputting) appearance - his weekly IPL treatments are likely to cause that. Eat well, exercise well, sleep well, and do some basic skincare (don't under or overshower and use moisturizer), and you'll be fine. Much of Johnson's micromanaging advice, including this meal, aren't really based on anything, and he'd likely get the same results he currently gets even if he ate a far different, yet still generally healthy, diet.

@@PoeLemic but I did emphasize “lifespan AND healthspan” in my response. If you can be 110 but your healthspan is as if you’re 74, that’s not a bad thing, except for the fact that if you’re the only one doing it, you’ll have to see most of your friends and loved ones die, which sucks. But society has been progressing towards much longer lifespans that previous eras could have imagined. I watched Napoleon on Thanksgiving, and after seeing that he died at the age of 51 (which seemed young to me), I Google searched the average lifespan in 1800. “In 1800, no region had a life expectancy higher than 40 years.” Now imagine someone in that day advising people that you don’t want to live to your 50s or 60s when you fast forward to today and the global life expectancy is just over 70. My family traditionally stay pretty active, mobile, and independent through their mid 90s, so I’m shooting for 110. 😆

Bryan Johnson's recommendation makes a big mistake by boiling the broccoli. Broccoli's biggest benefit is sulforaphane, but sulforaphane is made when the cells are crushed and two chemicals, glucoraphanin and myrosinase react. But when you boil broccoli, the heat deactivates the myrosinase, so you miss out on the sulforaphane. To get the benefits of sulforaphane, you need to chew the broccoli raw, or blend it, or chop it up, let it react and rest, and then cook it. The sulforaphane itself is somewhat heat stable, but if you cook and then chew it, you miss out on the benefits of the sulforaphane.

So when you boil all that stuff, a lot of the nutrients are lost into the water, so unless you are going to use that water, you have already negated some of the benefits. Chopping up the broccoli and cauliflower and letting it sit for about 40 minutes before cooking it allows an enzyme to release the sulforaphane in those - cooking first destroys the enzyme, so again, you don't get the full benefit of those wonderful vegetables (you can season with ground mustard seeds at the end, however, to make up for that if you cook first.) Same thing with garlic - would be much more beneficial if minced up raw and allowed to sit rather than boiling. Anyways, I don't see this as being a game changer for those looking to maximize their nutrition and other benefits of a plant-based diet.
