Trying THRIFTING HACKS For When The Fitting Rooms Are Closed

Thrift shopping for clothes is a great way to shop for a wardrobe on a budget and find fun unique pieces that you otherwise might not come across. BUT, lately it seems like a lot of the dressing rooms have been closed! This makes finding clothes (pants especially) really difficult if you can't try them on! In a recent thrifting video I did, I had a lot of responses from YOU about hacks and tricks to try when the fitting rooms are closed, and I decided to try some of the out and document my findings 😀 Hope you enjoy!

I use a tape measure. You have to take the waist measurement into account with the rise, so the neck trick just isn't reliable. The lower the rise, the bigger the waist has to be. I also ALWAYS measure the hips across right under the zipper. Waist and rise mean nothing if the cut of the jeans is slim, and you're more curvy. I know I need approximately a 44" hip, so 22" across. Eyeballing or holding the pants across your the hips isn't reliable, either. I wear bike shorts under pants if I don't want to wear a skirt or dress, so I can find a corner and literally take off my pants, because I'm still covered. And yes, I'm still mad that many thrift stores have removed their dressing rooms!

Yes I think the more measurements the better and I agree the neck trick is not reliable but maybe gives a very general idea, paired with a tape measure!

I've been thrifting since the 70s! Back then - in the 70s and 80s my sister and I would take anything from the 50s-60s and then we'd do fashion shoes for ourselves at home. I SURE WISH I had kept those clothes. I still go and buy all the old things and occasionally we will find some nice vintage things. Almost every room in my house those has clothing stored away in closets, dressors and under beds. I need to STOP!

Great tips!! Definitely trying these! Another option could be leggings or bike shorts. I had on bike shorts yesterday and they were perfect for no dressing room shopping, I just happened to be wearing them and was psyched because I got the truest fit. I feel like the employees don't pay much attention anymore because they know the dressing rooms are gone now. My go to is usually the neck trick which I had just taught my sister when I realized I had on bike shorts, ha ha, fun day of thrifting!!

The neck thing did work, kind of, but it was also dependent on the rest of the measurements!

It's knowing your waist-to-rise ratio that is critical: lower rise = larger waist requirement, etc. Still a gamble but I find this works well! 🙂

I have a much smaller waist than hips so most jeans gape at the back, and pencil skirts are too tight at the hips or too big in the waist, etc. I sew and know my measurements, but if I couldn’t try (or at least return) everything, I wouldn’t go op shopping*. Half the fun is trying on random vintage things and either falling in love or having a giggle at how wrong it is. I try on a lot so I make a point of putting stuff back if I’m confident I remember where I found it to save time for the volunteers. This usually means someone thinks I work there and asks me for help! * Aussie for thrifting.

You know I love your videos. When you said you were going to wear a summery dress so you could sneakily try on jeans, I actually stopped the video. I needed another cup of coffee so I would be ready to watch a salesperson yell at you for trying to steal from a thrift store. And maybe the cops were going to show up! Pretty disappointing lol! Kidding. This was actually really good info plus I got to see you wear sandals when there's snow on the ground which is pretty funny too. 😃

I wore a long, flowy summer dress this week when I went to Goodwill. It worked great. You should definitely take off your coat next time. I also have tried wearing leggings, a tight camisole top, and a looser button up shirt. You can try the jeans on right over the leggings. It stinks that Goodwill has removed all of their dressing rooms and didn't even put up mirrors for us.

My weight has fluctuated around 50 lb since becoming a full grown adult but my arm length hasn't gone up and down so that seems like a hack invented by a hack!

For me that arm waist thing has never worked. I just put the pant against my body they need to be right at the side seam of the ones I'm wearing for them to fit. If the pants stretch they can be a little in bit before the side seams of the pants you're wearing and they will fit too. I'm a seamstress and that has always worked even with my kids when they were small. Also I see a lot of girls wearing leggings and then trying on the jeans right over them.
