for the pen hack to work your need an erasable pen as it has exothermic properties which allows the thermic energy from friction to get rid of the ink so basically using heat from a lighter or any source of heat really stimulates this reaction!

3:02 Most likely they were using a rub out pen in the video not a normal one . Rub out pens use heat from the friction of rubbing on in , so it would also work with the heat of something like a lighter to make the ink vanish.
